Research Interest and Scientific Activity My research activity deals with the study of simple and composite stellar populations in the local universe and beyond. During my Ph.D. I worked, in collaboration with M. Nonino 1, I. Ferraro 2 and G. Iannicola 2 on the kinematical properties of the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Fabrizio et al. 2011) reducing and analyzing spectroscopic data taken with different instruments and resolutions. In this context, I developed an interactive code to measure the stellar radial velocities using low-, medium- and high-resolution spectra (ROma Stellar Spectra Analyzer ROSSA, Fabrizio et al. 2012b). The approach I followed has the advantage that the radial velocity measurements rely on the fit of hundreds of single and blended lines. Moreover, the algorithm is independent of the evolutionary properties (temperature, gravity) of the targets, of the spectral resolution and of observational conditions. I established a collaboration with F. Thévein 3 working on ESO/VLT UVES high-resolution spectra for the determination of iron abundances in Carina (Fabrizio et al., 2012a). We improved the code for the interpolation on the grid of atmosphere models provided by MARCS to obtain specific atmosphere model at fixed surface temperature, gravity and chemical composition. The model is used as an input for the radiative transfer code MOOG to perform the spectrum synthesis. We adopted this approach to a large sample of Carina high-resolution spectra, finding preliminary evidence of NLTE effects between neutral and singly-ionized iron abundances. The Carina dsph galaxy was also analyzed with a deep and accurate multi-band photometry, in collaboration with P.B. Stetson 4, providing comparison with theoretical framework (Bono et al. 2010; Stetson et al. 2011; Fabrizio et al., 2013) and discovering new variable stars (Coppola et al. 2013). Recently, in collaboration with M. Monelli 5 and A. Milone 6, we applied the pseudo-color c U,B,I index to the Carina photometry in order to remove the age-metallicity degeneracy of red giant branch stars (Monelli et al. 2014). The c U,B,I index was adopted, as an age and probably a metallicity indicator, to split stars along the red giant branch and to investigate the chemical evolution of the two distinct Carina stellar populations. Therefore, I continued the spectroscopic analysis of Carina in collaboration with F. Primas 7 and M. Romaniello 7 for the determination of abundances for alpha-elements (Fabrizio et al., 2015) and neutron capture process elements (Fabrizio et al., in preparation), by using both the equivalent width fitting and spectrum synthesis methods. In this context, I also developed an interactive procedure to compute the line profile and measure the equivalent width for either isolated or blended, weak/strong lines. Moreover, I continued the kinematical study of the Carina dsph. We found evidence of two different kinematic components inside the core radius. Interestingly, the two components seem to be correlated with different Carina sub-populations. These findings allowed us to obtain proprietary data with ESO/VLT 1 INAF-OATs 2 INAF-OAR 3 Nice Obs. 4 DAO 5 IAC 6 RSA-ANU 7 ESO

Michele Fabrizio 3 VIMOS spectrograph. We also obtained VIMOS proprietary data on the Sculptor dsph, where is expected a similar kinematical behavior as in Carina. The reduction and analysis of the quoted data is on going. During my postdoctoral fellow, my research activity was also focussed on a very contaminated ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, namely Hercules. In collaboration with G. Raimondo 8, A. Bellini 9, E. Brocato 2, V. Testa 2 and M. Cantiello 8, we explored two complementary techniques to decontaminate this galaxy (Fabrizio et al., 2014). In particular, we collected archival and proprietary multi-band data with LBC at the LBT and we measured stellar proper motions, allowing us to disentangle a significant fraction (>90%) of Milky Way stars. Moreover, we used the homogenous multi-band photometry to further identify background galaxies and foreground stars with the color-color diagram. Moving to closer systems, I also worked on Galactic Globular Clusters, in particular on the definition of a new method for the determination of primordial helium content (Troisi et al. 2011) and on a theoretical metallicity calibrations based on Strömgren-NIR photometry (Calamida et al., 2014). I also have been involved in the spectroscopic study of Galactic variables, such as Cepheids and RR-Lyræ, in order to investigate the chemical patterns occurring in the Milky Way (Genovali et al. 2013, 2014, 2015; Lemasle et al. 2013). - Current research projects In the last few years I have been involved in scientific collaborations focussed on the study of stellar populations in the Milky Way and in the Local Group galaxies. I am involved in the following research projects: stellar proper motion technique, from ground based images, to decontaminate ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, in collaboration with G. Raimondo 8, M.Cantiello 8, A. Bellini 9, E. Brocato 2 and V. Testa 2 ; cross-match of multi-wavelength source catalogs, in collaboration with P. Marrese 10 and G. Giuffrida 10 ; photometric and spectroscopic investigation of the Carina and Sculptor dsph galaxies, in collaboration with G. Bono 11, M. Monelli 5, P.B. Stetson 4, M. Nonino 1, S. Cassisi 8, A. Lemasle 14 ; multi-wavelength photometric analysis to characterize the multiple populations phenomenon in several dwarf galaxies, in collaboration with M.
