2 Overview 2.1 TIMM TIMM lets you build up a hierarchical system while using an existing network. It connects different DS-6 systems, links a large number of standard systems and allows you to integrate these into existing systems, e.g. management systems (control centres). The integrated database enables central configuration, status signalling, monitoring as well as central maintenance and diagnosis, even on a remote basis. In addition, the system includes intercom and telephone server cores which allow extensive functions from both areas as well as combinations of these functions. The components can be executed redundantly. 2.2 DS-6 DS-6 is an IP based decentralized communication system that allows fast WL/EL functionality with a bandwidth of 12KHz, providing excellent speech quality. Without SPOF (Single Point Of Failure) it is eminently suitable for implementing safety-relevant functions in speech communication systems (e.g. evacuation systems). DS-6 is certified in accordance with the requirements of DIN EN 80849. 3 Facility Small hardware cost in central area 12KHz speech connection between all DS-6 components, i.e. down to the sub master station, also in the higher-level network. Redundant system design DS-6 is in accordance with the requirements of DIN EN 80849. Central configuration Central maintenance and diagnosis (protocol files in database) even remote! DS-6 systems are self-sufficient, even if the higher-level IP system breaks down. The relevant configuration is included in the DS-6 system. Exceptions to this rule are special functions not provided by DS-6. The higher-level IP system enables a large number of standard functions. For example, the system can be integrated in a network management (error massages can be signalled by SNMP), or system time can be adjusted to real time by means of an NTP server. 4 Design 4.1 DS-6 4.1.1 Basics The DS-6 intercom system (NE-DS6) is designed as a digital intercom, public address and alarm system, especially for industrial requirements. With the aid of a communication server, it can be connected to PB systems / public telephone networks (ISDN / analog) and VoIP systems (IP telephone connections). Connections are established by means of an IP based Ethernet system. Unlike conventional intercom systems, DS-6 builds up communication connections using standardized transmission software that is installed at each subscriber s device, thus ensuring a high degree of reliability and system stability. DS6 links all analog and digital call stations with digital, intelligent MTSD DS-6 call stations using an IP based Ethernet system. This modular system can be extended to a maximum of 250 subscribers per cluster. The system gives you the option of connecting analog amplifiers but you can also connect actuators and sensors using the DS-6 I/O module embedded in the IP network. The transmission bandwidth of 100Hz up to 10kHz gives you excellent speech quality, even in loud and acoustically problematic environments. Decentralized arrangement of intelligence due to standardized software installed at each subscriber s device (plug-in slot). Data transfer via a standard IP network. Modular system structure with minimum amount of cabling. Option of adding any number and type of analog end devices. Actuators and sensors are connected directly by means of a network-based DS-6 I/O-module. Fast transmission of voice messages. Perfectly audible announcements / high speech quality due to a bandwidth of 100Hz up to 10kHz. Easy allocation of speech connections. Easy to use and to configure. Redundant network connections (RJ45) to subscribers. 2 LAN connections per module. 2 LAN connections per MTSD DS-6 call station. Connection of digital call stations. Connection to telephone systems (ISDSN / analog/ VoIP) via communication server. The DS-6 intercom system can be used in temperatures of -10 to +55 C. It is certified by the TÜV Rhineland in accordance with the requirements of EN 60849/VDE 0828 (electro-acoustic emergency warning systems). High system stability due to redundant IP system. Cyclic monitoring of system functions. Errors and malfunctions are displayed immediately. Amplifier function monitoring. Decentralized transmission without any single point of failure. 4.2 TIMM 4.2.1 Basics TIMM is mainly software and includes various server core s for different basic applications (intercom, telephony and control). The server software is installed on the so-called TIMM Com and communicates directly with standard IP end devices or systems. It also communicates with special and external systems by means of gateways. TIMM s basic structure with its basic server cores and clients is visualized in the following sample diagram: Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 7 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
As you can see, the TIMM Com is the centre of the diagram. In a standard network, it represents the transmission level to IP gateways, IP systems or IP end devices, which, in their turn, represent the process level. It is there that we find the communication systems or end devices that are available in the field. the TIMM Com is a purely software-based central entity used for cross-sectional tasks such a s control, monitoring and configuration. Thus, it represents the link between individual components, on the one hand, and system management, on the other. It receives events and, on the basis of these events, links sources and destinations in accordance with pre-defined rules. It monitors subscribers and always knows about the current status of the Neumann Electronic IP system. The user and visualization levels consist of operator stations, management systems, higher-level communication systems as well as remote maintenance and programming interfaces. TIMM applications are more than just intercom and public address systems they cover a broad range of emergency call and information systems as well as all-comprehensive security systems. As a special feature, TIMM includes the option of combining individual devices and entire systems, so for instance the DS-6 decentralized communication system by ms Neumann Electronic. This makes it possible to integrate old analog systems, current digital systems and future-oriented switching server into one overall system. As a result, customers can use their existing network structure to implement an industrial application that is both efficient and inexpensive. As in the case of the successful MDK system, two entities are integrated intimm. First and foremost, of course, there is the intercom and public address technology that has been the focal point of ms Neumann Elektronik s technological know-how for decades. Here s how it works. The intercom server controls, monitors and configures all connected DS-6 systems. In addition, it also manages any previously used digital and analog systems, thus making the transition to the IP age easier by allowing for slow migration. Also, a telephone server has been integrated in order to reflect the increasing importance of telephony in combination with public address technology. This server offers a large scope of functions based on common standards in network technology. Additional functions support industrial applications as well as emergency call and information systems. The telephone server is a software-based private branch exchange (PB) that can be used as SIP Proxy and gateway to the conventional telephone network (PSTN) via S0 and S2M. Functions include voice mail, conferences, queues, routing, parking, as well as recording and logging of calls. Its software supports the SIP, H.323, IA2, Analog, ISDN (BRI and PRI) protocols, to name but a few. In particular, IA2 enables special connections that are not included in the standard, e.g. connections between a telephone (channel) [Full Duplex] and a DS-6 gateway. This allows calls from any telephone (Full Duplex) and DS-6 call stations (Half Duplex) or even to amplifiers (public address function). The call number list tells you how channels and applications are interconnected. Applications are the active server elements that not only transmit and receive audio data but also build up connections and disconnect existing lines. 4.2.2 TIMM Com Als TIMM Hauptkomponente bietet der TIMM Com folgende Eigenschaften: o o o o o o It provides various services: Those are mainly the higher-level functions for intercom, public address and telephony. Each service is based on its own software. Communication via TCP/IP. It s database-supported: The database includes static information (e.g. configuration) as well as dynamic information (e.g. Engaged status). In addition, it includes protocols of statuses and events. It allows local and remote service: Configuration and updates can be loaded either locally or by remote access. Statuses can be accessed in protocols. Linked DS-6 systems can be programmed: The DS-6 systems are configured by the Com in connection with the DS-6 gateways, either automatically or manually. Error Management via SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol): It addition to the database protocols, TIMM can be integrated into other operating systems by means of SNMP. This is because all error messages are provided (displayed) also via SNMP-MIB. Version with server redundancy: Due to its central importance, the Com is designed as a redundant option. The two servers have identical configuration. The only difference is that one server is defined as default while the other is defined as redundant. In addition, there is a connection between the servers. The default server is monitored by the redundant server. A failure or breakdown of the default server will be registered by the redundant server. The TIMM Com and, possibly, the redundant TIMM Com are integrated in the TIMM network by means of Ethernet interfaces. Further TIMM components look upon the complete unit as a device with one IP address. The two PC s are linked by an independent network connection (1000BaseT). (figure TIMM Com with Net work interface) For more information about the TIMM Com see the technical description 1840103353. 4.2.3 TIMM DS-6 Gateway Public address and intercom are covered by DS-6, the current, state-of-the-art IP system which includes all necessary connections for devices and components at the process level. (For more information, see the DS-6 product descriptions). The system is linked to TIMM central database by means of the DS-6 Gateway. From the perspective of DS-6, the TIMM DS-6 Gateway represents 1 to n DS-6 devices, thus offering a variety of options for creating links into the TIMM system. One of its major functions is to implement the DS-6 specific network traffic so that even more standard network functions (e.g. VoIP protocols) are applicable and an existing customer network can be used. The DS-6 broadcast is converted by TIMM into unicasts. Messages and controls are implemented by means of SNMP or standard database communication. Despite the conversion mentioned above, the superior speech quality provided by a bandwidth of approxi- Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 10 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
mately 11 khz is continued via TIMM. With identical functionality, the Gateway allows a bandwidth adjustment to standard telephony. A special feature is the automatic programming function of the connected DS-6 system. The TIMM DS-6 Gateway receives all the data from the TIMM Com database and programs all DS-6 devices. Even if the TIMM DS-6 Gateway fails to function properly or even breaks down completely, all DS-6 applications will still be available. 5.1 Speech communication 5.1.1 Basics Basically speaking, TIMM is a speech communication system that includes four different applications: intercom, public address, telephony, and emergency calls. A system can offer one or several of these applications; it can even include all of them as well as common functionality. TIMM can be connected to other voice transmission systems, above all to DS-6 see 1640001500. Of course, DS-6 may be used as a stand-alone intercom or public address system. However, TIMM also can be used to combine any number of DS-6 systems, thus significantly increasing the maximum number of subscribers, which in a DS-6 stand-alone system is 250. At the same time, the high bandwidth of approximately 11 khz that is used in DS-6 is continued in TIMM. Customers can even use their own networks. Also, existing analog intercom and public address systems can be integrated. TIMM comes with the technical properties required for telephony and emergency calls, another factor which enables you to connect other systems. The following chapters include examples of applications. 5.1.2 Increasing the number of DS-6 subscribers Using DS-6 functionality and voice quality, a sizeable system (in terms of subscribers) can be set up while using the configuration of the database in TIMM Com. As described above, direct DS-6 network connections can also be implemented using VLAN via the higher-level network. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 13 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
Basic principle: Sample implementation: Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 14 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
5.1.3 Redundant public address DS-6 can be set up redundantly for safety-related applications, e.g. by using backup amplifiers or doubled amplifiers in the PA area. DS-6 subsystems can even substitute each other to achieve total system component redundancy in situations when a complete subsystem of the process level breaks down. In these cases, every second area is covered by a neighbouring system so that, if a subsystem stops functioning, this area will still be covered by the other system. Depending on the used loudspeaker distribution concept, a 50 per cent total amplifier power in this area will be enough to ensure sufficient overall coverage, e.g. for evacuation purposes. Several neighbouring areas can also be used to provide redundancy coverage. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 15 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
5.1.4 Adding locations for a DS-6 system TIMM can also be used to remotely install one or more components of a DS-6 system even if there is no VLAN or any direct cable connection. Using TIMM, DS-6 can be split up into several components (see illus. below). Note that cross connections are possible in a routed network. By using a simple system structure, e.g. remotely install a single call station, the manufacturer recommends installing one TIMM DS-6 Gateway Software on the TIMM Com so that only two simple PCs are required for coupling. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 16 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
5.1.5 Telephone system TIMM can be built as a pure telephone system but it doesn t claim a comfortable telecommunication system. The telephone features should provide functions for requirements from industry, railway and security systems. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 17 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
5.1.6 Emergency call system w ith ISDN connection A simple structure, e.g. for small-sized tunnel emergency call systems, can be implemented by using ISDN. However, a TIMM based solution is more variable and comfortable not only when you consider the option of implementing a system in which switching is performed directly by a TIMM ISDN gateway (using special software) and error messages are delivered directly by the emergency call station (contact). In addition to performing the switching, the TIMM Com also monitors the emergency call stations. To increase availability, the network used for emergency and/or information call stations may be run as a redundant network ring. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 18 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
5.1.7 Emergency call system operator station A combination of IP telephone and MTSD (here only as a key and lamp extension) is suitable as an operator station. A PC with a graphic user surface may be used as a more comfortable alternative. (Emergency) calls can be put through to the operator station to be dealt with or forwarded from there. In addition, error messages can be displayed. TIMM also enables connecting, monitor and execute emergency and information call stations using different technology, e.g. ISBN. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 19 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
5.1.8 Emergency call system connecting to a management system Using TIMM, emergency call and information systems of great complexity can be set up, even if different technologies are being used. In addition, interfaces to other systems, such as management systems, can be established. As a rule, TIMM provides the options of data logging and failure message management. Data can be prepared for various systems and transferred to these systems using either standard or specially developed transfer protocols, with TIMM-API as a standard interface. Also, failure messages can be passed on to an failure management system via SNMP. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 20 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
5.1.9 Combining applications 5.1.9.1 Basics Get the best of both worlds: Intercom/PA and telephony. TIMM is able to combine both in various ways. Combinations can be configured conveniently via the database, without the need for additional hardware or software. The following chart illustrates the various ways in which TIMM can be used, by showing the components for creating a large number of applications and combinations. Of course, depending on the functionality, not all components may be required. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 21 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
5.1.9.2 Public address and telephony Public address functionality from a single telephone is an application that is frequently needed. The TIMM Com with integrated TIMM Telephone/Emergency Call Software can connect any telephony source with TIMM DS-6 gateways. Examples of such sources are IP telephones that are directly linked to a network, or subscribers from other systems (ISDN, GSM, ) that can be routed into the TIMM system via gateways. The SIP call is transformed into the IA protocol by the TIMM Com. The TIMM DS-6 Gateway then converts the call to a DS-6 connection so that any subscriber who places a call can make an announcement. 5.1.9.3 Intercom and Telephony The TIMM Com with integrated TIMM Telephone/Emergency Call Software can also establish connections between telephones and intercom call stations. From the perspective of MTSD or WFD, listening and speaking is controlled by the call station operator so that uncalled-for acoustic feedback is prevented. In other words, telephone subscribers can speak and listen as during a normal telephone call, with the call station operator controlling the direction of speech using the Subscriber key. This function is similar to the door terminal functionality (hands free speaking). 5.1.9.4 Operator station for intercom/pa and telephony All msneumann Elektronik systems which include the basic technologies of intercom/pa and telephony can be easily implemented without any time and money spent on additional control centres - a unique selling point! A special operator device - a combination of telephone and MTSD DS-6 - lets you handle both technologies from one operator station. As a result, you get the best of both worlds - you can use the MTSD DS-6 to place calls using, say, destination keys, and using MTSD DS-6 intercom calls can also be placed or announcements can be made. In TIMM this combination consists of an IP telephone and an MTSD DS6. For a higher degree of operating convenience and a large number of display options, the MTSD DS-6 can be replaced by a PC call station. The illustration below shows how to connect the operator station: Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 22 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
This constellation is often required by railway projects. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 23 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
The TIMM Com, including the redundant TIMM Com, is used only once in the entire system. Each new station with its components is connected to the system. Note that DS-6 components such as MTSD DS-6, PC call station, external call stations or amplifiers are connected using a TIMM DS-6 Gateway. Connections to stations using MDK are set up via a TIMM MDK/Analog Gateway for Intercom/PA connections and via a TIMM ISDN Gateway for telephone connections. You may consider merging the DS-6 network via the standard network using VLAN so that the TIMM DS-6 Gateway has to be used only once. Note that the maximum number of DS-6 devices, including cross connections, is 250. If this number will be exceeded, an additional TIMM DS-6 Gateway is required. The above concept includes certain breakdown or redundancy scenarios. The most important unit, the TIMM Com can be executed redundantly. The database contained there constantly mirrors itself. Each of the two PC s is executed as a RAID system and with TIMM Com hardware. Further redundancies (for example, in the event of a failure the IP emergency call station can log on to a different SIP- Proxy) or independent functions (for example, the DS-6 network continues to work independently when the TIMM Coms standard network breaks down) must be analyzed in the context of the functionality that they are associated with. The following illustration shows a breakdown scenario where additional the TIMM Com Software with integrated TIMM Telephone/Emergency Call Software is installed on the TIMM DS-6 Gateway. As a result, when the higher-level network or the TIMM Coms break down, emergency calls can still be processed locally. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 24 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
5.1.9.5 Requesting alarm announcements by telephone Saving alarm announcements with the option of subsequently requesting these announcements by telephone is a very special example application. First, alarm announcements are recorded by the telephone server s speech memory. Telephone subscribers can afterwards connect to this recording device and select a text which will then be output for them on the telephone. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 25 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
5.2 Operation TIMM is operated using the system s intercom system components which, however, may differ widely from project to project. These components include indoor and outdoor call stations, door terminals, and telephony, as well as emergency and information call stations. A PC call station is a universal graphical operating station with a high degree of operating convenience, allowing you easy access to functions from all applications. Currently, call stations for intercom and public address functionality are connected to a DS-6 network. Call stations for telephony and emergency calls are connected directly to the TIMM network. Examples: Type Indoor call stations Outdoor call stations Telephone Emergency and information call stations Bediengerät Examples (not complete) MTSD, panal mounted MTSD, PC call station WFD, WFD-Ex, WFA, WFA-Ex, door call station Analog, ISDN, IP telephone Analog, ISDN, IP emergency telephones/handsfree stations, emergency and infirmation call stations MTSD+Telephone, PC call station+telephone Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 26 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
5.3 Visualization All devices described in the previous chapter visualize states and events. Note that is possible to dedicate a device exclusively to visualizing. The PC call station is a case in point. Using the GUI software NEMMS, it displays graphic representations with data-point specific graphic objects showing states or events. The philosophy of so-called lines pervades all functions of speech communication systems developed by Neumann Elektronik. In other contexts, lines can also be understood as data-points. A line can be activated or passivated, or be provided with messages. These messages correspond to line signals indicating the following states: ON, SIGNAL1, SIGNAL2, etc..., OFF. Needless to say, the meanings of signals depend on the application they are used in. Example of visualization: Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 27 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
5.4 Controlling In addition to providing speech communication functionality, TIMM can control objects in connected systems, e.g. traffic signals or ventilators, either manually or automatically. These processe s are also managed using programmable lines. An SPS is a very individual programmable unit that can handle a lot of controlling tasks from DS-6. 5.5 Message Messages can be delivered by using lines so that connected systems can react accordingly. This has the same effect as visualization or control. 5.6 Connection and integration TIMM can be linked with, or integrated in, other systems by special interfaces. This lets you handle all previously mentioned tasks equally well or even better (e.g. using standards). These connections are referred to as API (Application Programmers Interface). TIMM currently provides a number of standard interfaces. Note that new interfaces can be implemented should they be required in the context of projects. Standard interfaces: Operation, control, message via protocol / device I/O (Relays, Optocoupler) - I/O (DS-6 IO-Module) DS-6 / IO-Module I/O (WAGO SPS) DS-6 / SPS CAN-Bus CANopen / CANbus-Gateway OPC OPC DA 3.0 / NEMMS Modbus-TCP/IP DS-6 / SPS Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 28 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
If -- in addition to control, message or visualization -- any voice channels should be required, analog channels are frequently used. For example, the channel of a DS-6 device, which is remote-controlled by the central system interface, provides intercom and public address functionality. The API (various types) in conjunction with a voice channel for intercom / public address and a voice channel for telephony and emergency call / information systems may be used for all types of applications. Currently, the VoIP voice channel with SIP protocol is suitable for the telephony voice channel. Example: Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 29 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
6 Redundancies 6.1 DS-6 System As a result of the following properties, the DS-6 system has a high redundancy factor. Each IP interface has a redundant counterpart which kicks in as soon as the other fails. As a result, each piece of information is transmitted twice. Similarly, the network between the modules also has a redundant counterpart so that all connections remain stable even if one of the two networks should fail to function properly or even break down completely. Another important property of DS-6 is its decentralise organization. As a result, the DS-6 system does not have any SPOF (single point of failure). If one component breaks down, all other components continue to function normally. Within the context of TIMM, the DS-6 system is self-sufficient. It continues to function properly even if the higher-level transmission level breaks down. 6.2 TIMM The PC s for the TIMM system, such as the TIMM Com and the TIMM DS-6 gateways, have redundant counterparts, i.e. each functional unit is matched by one redundant unit. 6.2.1 TIMM Com Activ e Cluster Node Passive Cluster Node Redundante Harddisk (RAID-System) Gigabit Crossover DISK Replication DRBD Redundante Harddisk (RAID-System) The following description deals with implementing a joint redundant mass storage device. Inside the cluster, there is no designated master all nodes are identical. However, there is one node that gives priority to certain tasks, e.g. database tasks. This leads to a simple failover and failback. Both TIMM Coms behave identically. Monitoring is done by Heartbeat. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 30 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
DRBD (Distributed Replicated Block Device) as a kernel module in combination with a management application in user space and a script, it mirrors a block device on a productive (primary) server to another (secondary) server in real time. This procedure is used to achieve high availability (HA) of various tasks in the UNI/LINU environment. Inside the TIMM network, the functional unit and, possibly, also the redundant functional unit are integrated by means of Ethernet interfaces. The remaining TIMM components look upon the entire unit as a device with its own IP address. The two PC s are linked by an independent network connection (1000BaseT). Detailed information on the TIMM Com is included in the technical description 1840103353. 6.2.2 TIMM DS-6 Gateway The TIMM DS-6 Gateway interoperates with the redundant TIMM DS-6 Gateway more or less on the same principle. However, no disk replication is required here due to the fact that no configuration or status information is stored in the TIMM DS-6 Gateway. Just like the other DS-6 system components and devices, the TIMM DS-6 Gateways are connected with the DS-6 network by means of 2 Ethernet interfaces in order to achieve network redundancy. Detailed information on the TIMM DS-6 Gateway is included in the technical description 1840103348. 7 Configuration 7.1 Basics As far as the intercom functions are concerned, the system is configured using the TIMM database and the INI files available in the TIMM Com / TIMM DS-6 Gateway. A special configuration is required for the PC call stations (graphics, buttons, etc.). 7.2 TIMM/DS-6 The entire system including the DS-6 system is configured in the TIMM Com. For more information on the DS-6 configuration parameters, see 1840105009. The devices are configured automatically by the TIMM Com by means of the TIMM DS-6 Gateways. 7.2.1 Postgresql The central data base is a Postgresql data base. Postgresql is a free, object relational data base management system (ORDBMS). It is conform to SQL standard ANSI-SQL 92, i. e. all required functions are available and its behaviour is as defined. Characteristics: Open Source Transactions (secure transmission of data) Backups on running system Self-contained index adjustment (adjusting deleted data without lost of performance) Replication of whole data (for redundancy) Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 32 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
7.2.2 Data base structure 1. table: In TIMM system available TIMM Com 2. table: All TIMM DS-6 system gateways The network adapter corresponding to TIMM must have the same IP address (in the same range) as the TIMM Com 3. table: All DS-6 devices Each DS-6 device corresponds to one gateway and beside the unique UID a DS-6 internal device number devnum, that has to be unique only in the concerning DS-6 network. 4. table: All keys Each device has one or more keys that are dedicated to specified functions. 5. table: All virtual DS-6 IDs Virtual DS-6 IDs are necessary if connections between two different DS-6 networks are required. The table is built automatically. 6. table: All connections in TIMM E. g. you can find the field busy. It shows the status of the connection. The date of the connection is written in. 7. table: Central log book All messages from TIMM Com were registered here. Each message is tagged with sequence number, time stamp and optional the UID of the source of the message. Each message has a severity and a message text. Between the tables there exist several referential dependencies. The tables are so programmed that with deleting of one data record all referencing data records were deleted automatically. E. g. the user deletes the Com the whole system will be deleted. With deleting a gateway all devices concerning the connected network will be deleted and with deleting a key all connections that corresponds to the key will be deleted. So a continuous integrity of the data is warranted. The communication with the data base is realized with SNMP (information transmission in the network) and direct data base access that contained switching intelligence with function programs (SQL language). 9 Commissioning, maintenance and diagnosis 9.1 Commissioning 9.1.1 TIMM Com To activate the cabinet for the PC s, proceed as follows: The PC s are configured to start up automatically as soon as voltage is applied. This is true not only for the operating system but also for the application itself. The redundant servers are exceptions to this rule. When you start up the system for the first time, the first PC should be active as default PC while the redundant PC should be passive. To provide a clear distinction as to which PC is active (and which passive), it is advisable to start by launching the first PC. However, if you start up both PC s at the same time and the redundant PC turns out to be active, simply reset the redundant PC. IMPORTANT NOTE! Never shut down the PC s by simply switching off the voltage as this may cause serious data file errors. Instead, use the designated buttons to properly shut down the PC (see illus. below). 9.1.2 Replacing a DS-6 Devices A DS-6 device cannot be put into operation by simply removing the old device and installing a new one. All newly delivered components have the same basic configuration. This particularly relates to the IP address which needs to be (a) known and (b) non-ambiguous when installing the device so that the configuration can be loaded. IP address in non-preconfigured delivery: 129.0.110.254 Single device (MTSD, analog module) IP addresses in non-preconfigured delivery: 129.0.110.{ 201 to 208} Multiple device (U adapter or analog adapter) What needs to be matched: IP address DS-6 operating software version Current DS-6 configuration (not required for TIMM) Mac address in configuration (not required for TIMM) Recommended procedure: To be on the safe side, enter the correct IP address(e s) before connecting the device with the network. To do so, link a PC/notebook to the device (for example, using a cross connect patch cable) and locate the IP address in a WEB browser. The PC must know this extra network, i.e. you need to configure the PC accordingly prior to carrying out these steps. We recommend using a PC with either the DS-6 Manager or the DS-6 Configuration software. Press OK. This brings up a WEB surface where you need to enter the IP address, the Gateway IP address and the Device ID. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 46 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
The device ID is identical with the bottom octet of the IP address (see ). When using an DS-6 Analog Adapter or a DS-6 UK0 Adapter, you need to enter all 8 IP addresses. Now the device can be connected with the network and loaded with the correct configuration. Note that this happens automatically in a DS-6 system that is connected with TIMM. Note also that it s important for the device to contain a basic list which may or may not be empty. 9.2 Maintenance and diagnosis 9.2.1 Connecting a notebook at DS--6 A notebook has to be connected to switch 2 391 5 for maintenance and configuration purposes. To do so, use a CAT5 cable. Please note that the DS-6 configuration software (L. No. 5 009 4) has be installed on the notebook for configuration purposes. Note that the DS-6 Manager (L. No. 5 007 2) has be installed for maintenance purposes. The notebook needs to be adjusted to the IP address 129.0.110.129 and the subnet mask 255.255.0.0. 9.2.2 Maintenance Due to the fact that the functionality of all slot boards and call stations is almost entirely electronic, regular maintenance is not required. Malfunctions in the electronics of slot boards and call stations are extremely rare. Past experience shows that the majority of slot board malfunctions are caused by the external cable network. Short circuits, earth contacts, lightning strikes, etc. in cabinets and distribution boxes may cause individual malfunctions such as blowouts or even damage to the central cabinet. When an IP device is replaced, the configuration software to the new device must be uploaded. In addition, the MAC address of the new device must be transferred to the DS-6 Configuration Software L. No. 5 009 4. The MAC address can be found inside the IP device, i.e. DS-6 Interface Module Analog L. No. 2 390 4 and MTSD DS-6 Intercom Call Station L. No. 1 045 0. After replacing the DS-6 Interface Module Analog you need to make sure that the DIP switch positions in the new and the defective modules are identical. Individual malfunctions and/or blowouts are shown by the red fault indicator LED of the affected slot. In addition, a potential-free changeover contact serves as a collective malfunction display. This contact can show the connection designations Fault/NO, Fault/NC or Fault/com. The following tools can be used for maintenance and diagnosis purposes: Name Delivery number DS-6 Manager L. 9.4 TIMM WEB based failure monitoring If no SNMP management is available, install TIMM View on the TIMM Com (see Software). TIMM View is an additional software program that creates an extra SNMP/MIB web server providing tabular and, optionally, graphic options for displaying fault messages via a Web Browser. So a PC or Laptop with an installed browser inside the TIMM network is enough to monitor TIMM and DS-6 fault messages via the TIMM network. The functionality uses the SNMP MIB objects and programmable graphic design. Therefore the graphics have to be design depending on the project. Notice! As the following diagrams and screen displays are project-specific, they require further service agreements. First web page overview. This example shows two networks that are both in working order. Note that a graphic display in TIMM is also possible. However, the graphic display option is an extra feature that needs to be configured by the manufacturer. 10 Network requirements 10.1 General requirements for speech transmission in netw orks Communication on the IP network is inherently less reliable in contrast to the circuit-switched public telephone network, as it does not provide a network-based mechanism to ensure that data packets are not lost, or delivered in sequential order. It is a best-effort network without fundamental Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. Therefore, VoIP implementations may face problems mitigating latency and jitter. VoIP is only usable in a network if important parameters as bandwidth, Delay and jitter are sufficient under network use of full capacity. Main problems occur with to less bandwidth and too long distances. Packet losses, high jitter and big delays reduce the speech quality. With prioritization and adequate net planning it is possible to reach a comparable speech quality and reliability like conventional telephone systems independent of traffic load. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 52 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
10.2 System dependent requirements 10.2.1 TIMM requirements on the netw ork 10.2.1.1 Basics The superordinated system (TIMM network) can be built project-specific stand-alone. But it is also possible to use an existing customer network. Therefore the planning of the network has to be done in cooperation with the network administrator, because an estimation of the availability of network connections is necessary for the decision to upgrade the network. 10.2.1.2 Data Router & Switches: state of the art (latency, jitter, etc.) Ports: 100-Base-T autonegotiation Protocol: TCP/IP Band width: connection data DS6 <->DS6 0,5 Mbit/s per connection (unicast) no broadcast DS-6 <-> Telefon 64 / 80 Kbit/s with raw data, but sampled Telefon <-> Telefon 64 / 80 Kbit/s with standard Codec G.711 Latency: The latency for speech transmission should be less than 50ms. 10.2.2 DS-6 requirements on the netw ork 10.2.2.1 Basics DS-6 is a decentralized system with the opportunity to spread the system over several places with network connection. If the direct network connections are not possible, also a superordinate network is usable. Due to the broadcast mechanism of DS-6 the connections through the superordinate network have to be realised with VLAN that the applications of DS-6 are independent from other network traffic. Example for the use of the superordinate network to connect DS-6 Devices: 1. Each place consists of a closed DS-6 System Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 54 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
2. Devices of several places are combined as a single DS-6 system The DS-6 devices are provided with 2 Ethernet interfaces (redundancy). To connect these devices the network has to fulfil several requirements. Due to the fact that DS-6 is an intercom system the most important requirement is a short latency on both networks. The use of unmanaged switches and the same structure in both networks are the best conditions for this. Bearb.: Hartwich/DS 1640001508 Seite 55 von 66 2012 ms N EUMANN ELEKTRONIK GMBH
