Sargeant Reynolds Community College

Your Future in the Emergency Medical Services Field What Does an Emergency Medical Technician Do? Emergency medical services personnel are the first people called to an emergency scene and are the first to evaluate the nature and extent of a medical problem. They determine the number of people injured, types of injury present, degree of trauma, and any pre-existing medical conditions the victims may have-such as allergies, epilepsy, or diabetes-that require special medical attention. They stabilize and safely transport each victim to a healthcare facility. Emergency medical services personnel will observe strict guidelines and work under the authority of a medical director. Work Environment: Emergency medical services personnel may work in a variety of settings including fire departments, private ambulance companies, hospitals, clinics, rural volunteer groups, medical flight companies, private businesses such as oil companies, and educational settings. Job Outlook: Opportunities in this career continue to grow, as emergency medical services personnel become integral team members in providing timely health care in emergencies. The outlook in the greater Richmond area is exceptional at this time due to an increasing population and an increased awareness of the role of emergency medical services providers. Length of Education and Requirements: The EMT Basic Technician can be completed in either one semester or spread over two semesters. The Intermediate Career Studies Certificate can be completed in two semesters after obtaining your EMT-B certification. The Paramedic AAS Degree can be completed either as four consecutive semesters after completing your EMT-B or two additional semesters after completing your Intermediate. Each program combines classroom and clinical instruction into a real-life job setting with our partnership agencies. National Registry certification is the outcome objective of this program as well as Reciprocity Certification by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Salary: While many EMS personnel are volunteers, this is changing. Emergency dispatchers or emergency care attendants range from $15,000-$20,000. More advanced EMTs such as Intermediates and Paramedics range from $25,000- $50,000 or more depending on their responsibilities. For further information on the Career Studies Certificates in Emergency Medical Technology (Basic, Intermediate, and Paramedic) and Paramedic AAS Degree offered through J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, please call the School of Nursing and Allied Health at (804) 523-5375.

Emergency Medical Technology General Information Class schedules: EMT-Basic is offered in the fall, spring and summer semesters.
