PRN_LOAD.EXE is a user-friendly program for loading the HPR4915 with new firmware or fonts. It is based on the DOS operating system and also runs under WIN 95/89/NT WIN2000 WIN ME WIN XP and OS/2. However, under these operating systems, it requires a free COM port for connecting to the printer by means of a serial cable. In order to update the firmware, the file 4915XXXX.STD must be available. In order to update the fonts, the file CPXXXXXX.FNT must be available. Download these files from the Internet site www.wincor-nixdorf.com to your hard disk or onto a system disk together with the program PRN_LOAD.EXE. Then start the PRN_LOAD program. The screen shown above appears.
Now switch on the printer with the Eject key held down. (if the printer is already switched on, you must first switch it off). Now press a key to start the loading procedure. Pressing the E key takes you to expert mode. This screen output shows the progress of the loading process. This screen output appears after the printer has been updated successfully. The printer is automatically reset and is then ready to operate.
EXPERT MODE The following functions can be selected in this mode. However, you can only select one function from this menu. 1. Load firmware and/or font 2. Unload the printer parameters in order to save them in a file 3. Configure a printer with the data from a file. Use the cursor keys to get from one menu item to another. Mark the required menu item with the spacebar. The CR key starts the selected function.
The required loading functions(s) can be chosen in this menu. Mark the required function(s) with the space bar; use the TAB key to skip from one item to the next. When you have selected the required items (you can select several at once), use the OK switch to reach the next menu item. You can select the required file(s) here. If you selected several items in the previous menu, then this menu appears again and prompts you until all files have been marked. Only then is the loading process started. Loading a second font requires a printer version with extended memory. A TBF font can be loaded here. The loading process is then shown as described above. Wait until all files have been transferred and the printer has reset itself.
READ PARAMETER To save the print parameters in a file, select Read Parameter. This screen output shows the progress of file transfer.
The following menu enables you to assign a specific name for the relevant project. This name can then be used to load additional printers with the same parameters. Simply overwrite the name 4915auto.ini with the keypad. Enter at least 8 characters; the Anhang.INI file is generated automatically. Please do not use the name 4915AUTO.INI; this is reserved for the fully automatic loading and configuration of the printer (described below) To load another printer with the same parameters, connect this printer to your system and start the program again. Now select the Write Parameter item as described above. Now select the parameter file. Wait until the printer has finished resetting. this enables customer-specific printer settings to be made quickly and easily.
Selection menu for the parameter file Fully automatic printer initialization Fully automatic printer initialization is a way to load the printer with the required firmware level, the required font and the entire printer configuration in the simplest possible manner. Proceed as follows: First load a printer with the firmware and fonts required as described above. Configure these as required in the system environment. Now read the printer configuration using the program (Read parameters) and save the data in the 4915AUTO.INI file. Copy the firmware file (*.MOD), the font file (*.FNT), the 4915AUTO.INI file and the PRN_LOAD.EXE program onto a bootable diskette. Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and insert the entry PRN_LOAD at the end of the file. Now start the PC with this diskette, bring the printer into the described mode (EJECT + POWER ON) and start the program by pressing a key. Then wait until the program is finished. (Of course you can also copy all files into a directory on the hard disk and start from there)
