How to test Diskeeper or V-locity with the Performance Monitor The purpose of this test is to show the negative effects of fragmentation using the Windows Performance Monitor as a benchmarking tool. The first part of the test is to retrieve data from IO indicators via the Performance monitor as a baseline for at least a period of 3 to 4 days while the system is in production and Diskeeper or V-locity technologies are disabled. The second part of the test is to enable the Diskeeper or V-locity technologies for at least 3 to 4 days to allow a time for optimization. The last part of the test is to retrieve the same IO indicators from the Performance Monitor to show the positive improvement in comparison to the before. 1. Install Diskeeper or V-locity on your system. During the installation process, make sure that the option to Enable Automatic Defragmentation is UNCHECKED. Following is a screen capture of this setting: 1
1. After the installation is complete, open the User Interface right click on the volume and select IntelliWrite. Then proceed to uncheck it as well. 2
2. After Diskeeper or V-locity is installed, open the user interface. Select the most fragmented drive and select Analyze. 3
4
3. Once the analysis is finished, select the Job Report tab and scroll down to determine the most fragmented file. 4. Save this Job Report and include the date as part of the job report filename. Please make a note of this file since this file will be used for our 5
testing. 5. Open Control Panel by clicking START, then Control Panel and then click on Administrative Tools. 6. Click on the Performance Monitor as shown on the screen capture to RUN perfmon.exe. 7. Open Data collector set, and then right mouse click on User Defined. 8. Select New, and then Data Collector Set as shown on the screen capture below. 6
9. Enter the name of your log file in the space provided (i.e. PreDefrag Log), and then select create manually. 7
10. Select Performance counter, and then click next. 8
11. Click on Add. 9
12. Drop down Logical Disk counter and choose the following indicators shown below: % Disk time Avg.Disk sec/transfer Avg.disk sec/write Avg.Disk sec/read Avg.Disk Read Queue length Avg. Disk Write Queue Length %idle time Split I/O. 13. The next screen is the create new data collector set window and it should look like this: 10
14. Do a quick check to make sure all the required counters are included and then click the next button. 15. The next step you will be asked where you would like the data to be saved, and press next. 11
16. The data collector is now set up and you have the option to either start collecting your data now, or save and close to run it later, and then click Finish. 12
17. To stop the log after 3 to 4 days, right click on the log and select to stop. This will create a log file in the C:\Perflogs folder that you can retrieve. You can also view these logs reports \user Defined on the left hand side of the Performance Monitor. 18. The next step is to enable the IntelliWrite and the automatic defragmentation through the User Interface to let it run for a 3 to 4 days and then repeat the steps 6 through 15 to compare the before and after reports. 2012 Condusiv Technologies.
