provides a broad spectrum of structural engineering solutions using state-ofthe-art analysis methods for safe and efficient project designs. Utilizing the latest design techniques, computer applications, and proven engineering concepts, derives structural solutions based on efficiency, economic feasibility, and support of the project architectural intent and expression. Our services move beyond traditional structural engineering design for buildings and bridges and includes specialties involving investigation, assessment, and planning. Sophisticated structural analysis must always back up common sense. Not replace it. Building structural analysis and design is a group of traditional services supporting the architectural design needs and goals. Generally involves programming support, conceptual or concept design schematics, design development, construction documentation, and contract administration during project construction. Workflow makes extensive use of structural analysis and design programs with links to building information modeling (BIM) programs to promote collaboration with other members of the project design team. Bridge structural analysis and design is a traditional service applying AASHTO code requirements in support of the transportation designer s intent. Foundation analysis and design services are for creating the ground support elements under building superstructures and civil site structures. Designed elements may include shallow foundation components such as spread footings, mat foundations, monolithic slabs, and grade beams. Deep foundation components could include drilled straight-shaft piers, under-reamed piers, auger-cast piling, or driven friction piles. Site Remediation design services are done in conjunction with the project geotechnical engineer to plan site modifications to accept new building foundations and slabson-grade. Concrete analysis and design services include framing design for conventional cast-in-place beams and slabs, columns, pan joists, and flat slabs. Conventional castin-place concrete could include traditional materials as well as newer high-strength concrete, 10 KSI and higher, and highstrength bars, 75 KSI and higher. Services can include consulting on performance enhancing admixtures as needed by project requirements. EXPERTISE 11
Post-Tensioned Concrete analysis and design services include framing design for mono-strand and bonded multi-strand components. Mono-strand components typically include slabs, beams, and girders. Bonded multi-stand elements are typically used in major girders and deep transfer girders. Past services include significant experience with large bonded multi-strand tendons for long span, deep transfer girders. Steel analysis and design services include framing design for conventional braced and rigid framing systems as well as eccentric braced frames and combined systems. Components can include conventional wide flange beams and columns, tubular columns and girts, composite slabs with headed shear studs, composite columns, open web steel joists, plate girders, and custom designed trusses. Load bearing cold-formed framing can be included as needed by the project type. Load Bearing Masonry design services include design for conventional concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls and lintels, single and multi-wythe. Design can include support for steel or concrete floor and roof framing systems. Load Bearing Precast Concrete design services include design for site cast tilt-wall panels and load path related connections supporting various steel framing systems. Site cast tilt-wall panel construction can be adaptable for a wide range of project types. Sustainability design services include support for LEED TM and other certifiable projects. While many structural materials tend to already have a high component of recycled material, services can include assisting the project team in selecting optimal materials to meet sustainability goals while maintaining structural safety and economy. Timber design services include design for conventional lumber framing, heavy timber, and glue-laminated components. Renovation and Repair design services can include studies, evaluations, and design plans for existing structures. Activities can include assessing potential design modifications for historical structures and other existing buildings with changed use and loads. Feasibility Studies for structural modifications, additions, and upgrades including meeting new code requirements are frequently conducted to test the validity of a proposed project or to explore options before project scope is set. Seismic Evaluation services are conducted on existing or proposed structures to assess the capability of a building s structural system to meet seismic building code requirements, plan for needed seismic upgrades, and make an overall evaluation of risk. Progressive Collapse Prevention and blast design services are frequently conducted on Federal projects and other mission critical type structures. Procedures involve dynamic and time history analyses made with finite element programs when doing the primary structural analysis and design of the project. Alternatively, this can be a specific service for a structure designed by others. Vibration analysis and design services include analysis and design for sensitive devices, critical equipment, and building operations. Activities can include evaluations for MRI, CT scanners, and data center equipment. Vibration Field Data Collection services include making vibration measurements within existing structures or at and around the site. Such measurements are used in the evaluation of current and anticipated structural performance. These evaluations may also include dynamic analyses to assess future performance of the structure and its uses. Evaluations and Investigations of existing structures are conducted to assess past or anticipated structural behavior and look for potential causes of adverse structural performance. Forensic Investigations are conducted to assess and document known structural damage or adverse structural behavior. Sometimes includes loss evaluation, expert witness testimony, and other documentation support for legal needs. Structural Peer Reviews are conducted to evaluate projects designed by others. These reviews are common on large or critical structures and are performed only by our senior staff. Sometimes includes reviews and plan checking for permitting or other government agencies. EXPERTISE 13
Collaboration through Technology Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a key service for performing high-level calculations to assess structural behavior beyond results from traditional hand calculations. Many current building designs tend to have indeterminate structural configurations that cannot be efficiently analyzed by traditional hand calculations. FEA provides a more rigorous analysis that yields a more predictable structural behavior and better economy. Results from the analyses can be linked to BIM models for sharing. Current software programs used for FEA and other structural design include RAM Structural System, Concept, Elements, STAAD.Pro, and proprietary inhouse written programs. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is employed on all architectural projects. BIM is an evolving project documentation technology, rich with information that can be shared among project team members and building owners. Such technology links with the finite element analysis models used to develop structural designs. The results are captured in our structural BIM models that can be referenced by architectural and mechanical BIM models produced by other project team members. Likewise, our structural BIM models reference the architectural and mechanical BIM models to further project coordination and team design collaboration. Current software programs used for BIM models include Revit and AutoCAD. Project Delivery: Design Build (DB), Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), and other newer project delivery methods have unique impacts on structural engineering. Our collaborative methodologies permit us to accelerate delivery of structural packages for pricing, fabrication, and early construction start; key goals of all of the newer project delivery methods. PROLOGIS 20/35 BUSINESS PARK Our Vibration Project Portfolio includes structural dynamic case studies performed for medical and industrial projects. There are many sources of vibration capable of producing motion sufficient to be perceptible by the occupants of a modern building. Transportation-related sources such as trains, subways, buses and trucks are common external sources of irritation. Often, internal activities such as aerobic exercises and the use of indoor tracks or corporate weight rooms can introduce vibration into one part of a building, which can be felt elsewhere, producing bewildering periodic problems. Problems also arise from vibration introduced by rotating mechanical equipment in basements or mechanical penthouses. These dynamic situations are difficult to predict with static design methods. DALLAS COWBOYS DISTRIBUTION CENTER Our Industrial Project Portfolio includes structural engineering for over five million square feet of industrial shell and core space for owners and tenants including The Dallas Cowboys, Quaker Oats, Walmart, Sam s Club, and Marazzi Tile. Beyond shell and core work, we provide structural engineering services supporting manufacturing operations and waste-water treatment related projects. Wastewater treatment projects completed across Texas include facilities at Reno, Paris, Tioga, Winnsboro and Emory.
