NAS Macro Market Environment In the NAS market, the main competitors are NetApp and EMC. NetApp vendors occupy a market proportion of 48%, and EMC vendors occupy a market proportion of 26%. They occupy a total market proportion of 74% and dominate the market. There are many other vendors, but their market proportions are small. Shipment quantity by region, No. 1: North America, 47% EMEA, 34% Asia Pacific, 10% only NAS products are commonly used in developed countries and regions.

Competition of High-End and Mid- Range NAS Vendors In January 2011, EMC released new storage products: VNX and VNXe. The VNX series adopted the existing celerra product form to implement unified management. In November 2010, EMC spent 2.25 billion USD to purchase the cluster vendor Isilon and set foot in the scale-out storage field. EMC targeted at the high-end clustered storage field. In November 2010, NetApp launched the new FAS32 and FAS62 series. The hardware specifications were greatly improved. The operating system software DATA ONTAP 8 was upgraded, that is, the GX clustered system software was integrated into ONTAP 8. In 2010, IBM launched SONAS, consolidated products and solutions, and released IBM OEM NetApp FAS products. In 2009, HP purchased Ibrix and Polyserv to enrich its storage product lines and target at the clustered NAS storage market. In June 2011, Oracle purchased Pillar. (1) High Performance Computing Storage: Scenario Description Current situation High performance computing encounters the disk I/O performance bottleneck. A single NAS storage array cannot meet the performance requirements of numerous computing nodes. The CPU resources used by computing nodes are about 30% to 50% of the total. The reliability of traditional NAS storage arrays is too low to satisfy computing tasks. The controllers of traditional NAS storage arrays work in active-standby mode. Computing tasks are interrupted if any controller is faulty. Requirement High performance NAS storage solution The performance is expansible. Highly reliable NAS storage devices Faults in storage controllers do not affect computing tasks.

(1) High Performance Computing Storage: Solution High performance The system supports 2 to 24 clustered NAS engine nodes. The overall performance is increased linearly along with the number of storage nodes. High reliability All storage nodes work in activeactive mode. A single point of failure does not affect the running of computing tasks. Failback is supported, and the running of computing tasks is not affected. File sharing All computing nodes share the same file based on the NFS or CIFS network sharing protocol. Management console Computing center 1000M network N8500 Computing nodes

(2) DST: Scenario Description Current situation The storage device cost is increased continually. Enterprise data amount increases by 30% to 50% each year. Enterprises expand the storage array capacity continually. The service performance is gradually decreased. Mass data is stored in the single storage volume. As a result, the data retrieval time is increased continually. Requirement The data storage mode is optimized to improve the service performance. The data that is seldom used is migrated to inexpensive storage arrays. Data is always available. Service hosts can access the migrated data at any time. Data center network Online storage NAS storage array Service LAN

(2) DST: Solution Improved I/O access performance of service hosts Hotspot data is stored in the high performance tier-1 storage arrays. The data that is seldom used or not used is migrated to inexpensive storage arrays, that is, tier-2 storage arrays. Hosts can access the data stored in the tier-2 storage arrays at any time, and the data does not need to be migrated back to the tier-1 storage arrays. Ease of operation The solution is based on information lifecycle management (ILM). Data is migrated automatically and dynamically and does not require human interference. -SAN Data Center Service LAN NAS N8500 10 million-level file migration supported Tier-1 storage Tier-2 storage

(3) Volume Mirror Between Arrays: Scenario Description Requirements for NAS storage arrays Service hosts access shared files based on CIFS/NFS. Requirements for high service availability Service hosts can access storage arrays around the clock. Local protection is provided for data, and backup software is not required. Data is stored to two or more storage arrays at the same time. The controllers of NAS storage arrays work in active-active mode to prevent single points of failure. Services are not interrupted even if one storage array is faulty.

(3) Volume Mirror Between Arrays: Solution Data Center Continuous service Servie LAN reliability 2 to 24 clustered NAS engine nodes are -SAN NAS supported. Services are not interrupted even if one node is faulty. Storage array 1 Mirror volume 1 Mirror volume 2 Mirror volume 3 Storage array 2 N8500 The parts of a storage array are fully redundant. Storage arrays are deployed in redundancy mode. Services are not interrupted even if one array is faulty.

(4) Unified Storage Application: Scenario Description Current situation Multiple service types The main storage architecture is DAS. New services are launched continuously. Data amount bursts. The system is continually expanded and upgraded. Requirement: storage convergence High performance data storage storage is used for key services to ensure the storage performance. The NAS or SAN storage architecture that is easy to deploy is used for key services.

Comparison Between the N8500 and Its Counterparts NAS Product Main Counterparts Product Comparison Marketing Strategy EMC NetApp EMC NetApp EMC NetApp Highend N8500 Isilon S- series Isilon X- series Isilon NLseries FAS 6280 FAS 6240 FAS 6210 The overall performance of the N8500 is similar to that of the Isilon. The single-node performance of the N8500 is 10 times as high as that of the Isilon. The maximum capacity of the FAS 6200 series is 2.8 PB, and the maximum capacity of the N8500 is 15 PB. The Isilon excels in radio&television applications, and the N8500 is applicable to general NAS markets. NetApp's products do not perform well in the video and HPC fields, whereas the N8500 is applicable to these fields. Midrange N8300 VNX 7500 VNX 5500 VNX 5300 VNX 5100 FAS 3270 FAS 3240 FAS 3210 The architecture of the N8300 is more advanced than that of the VNX series. The N8500 adopts the multinode active-active architecture, and VNX series adopts the N+1 architecture. The FAS series supports up to two nodes. The N8300 has up to 6 nodes, and the N8500 has up to 16 nodes. The multiple nodes of the EMC VNX series adopt the split architecture and do not implement load balancing. The nodes cannot access the same file concurrently. NetApp is not good at performance/capaci ty expansion due to the scale up architecture. Therefore, NetApp cannot meet current customers' buyingon-demand requirements. Low end VNXe 3100 VNXe 3300 FAS 2050 FAS 2040 FAS 2020

EMC VNX Analysis Strengths Weaknesses The EMC VNX series supports rich value-added software packages. EMC has huge brand influence. Its high availability is based on the N+M active-standby mode and the reliability is limited. Redundant node resources are wasted. The engine node failover time is long. The control station and failover License are required. Its architecture is not a real cluster architecture. Data cannot be shared between engines, and the performance bottleneck caused by hotspot data access cannot be prevented. The overall performance, storage capacity, and scalability of the system are limited. The maximum memory of a single DM is only 24 GB. The FLARE operating system is based on Windows and provides low stability, high memory usage, and low efficiency. Storage units do not support hot swap of hardware I/O expansion modules. Expansion steps are complicated. The FAST DST granularity is large. Hotspot data location is not precise. The migration performance is low. The preheat time is long. If Virtual Provisioning is enabled, the performance deteriorates seriously. The maximum performance deterioration rate is 78%. In actual applications, its availability is zero.

N8500 Marketing Strategy (VS EMC) Attacking policies Persuade customers to use clusters of more than four NAS nodes. Then, EMC has to provide the VNX5700 or higher series and the VG8+CX array to meet this customer requirement. This increases EMC's business cost. Persuade customers to use product-level DST in the system. Then, EMC's has to provide the FAST feature. Persuade customers to use file-level DST of small granularities. EMC's granularity is GB. Persuade customers to use single-node or system large cache function. Then, EMC has to provide the large cache VG8 gateway or VNX7500 to meet this customer requirement. This increases EMC's business cost. The cache configuration of the VG2 gateway is 6 GB, and the cache cannot be expanded. EMC may provide the VG8+CX120/240 or VNXe series to compete with us. To prevent this possibility, persuade customers to use the system with more than 480 disks. This increases EMC s business cost. Persuade customers to use the NBU backup policy in the backup application scenario. EMC supports the NDMP protocol (single backup stream) but does not support embedded NBU. On the N8500, NBU Media Servers can be embedded in multiple nodes to improve the backup performance. Persuade customers to use multiple data protection modes. The software license of the N8500 is inexpensive, and customers are not additionally charged for the mirror, snapshot, and remote replication functions. The software license of EMC's product is expensive, and customers must be additionally charged for software upgrade. Defending policies Do not compete with our competitor in terms of value-added software functions. Defending in terms of value-added software functions: Emphasize huawei's advantages in prices, localization services, and maintenance&warranty. The discounts of all huawei value-added software licenses are zeros. Engineers of huawei provide installation and acceptance on site. huawei provides three-year free software and hardware technical support (huawei) and aftersales services. Do not compete with our competitor in terms of brand names or brand reputation. Defending in terms of brand names and brand reputation: Emphasize huawei's advantages in self-development, place of origin (made in China), and localization services (huawei).

NetApp Analysis Strengths Weaknesses The Unified Target Adapter (UTA) adopts unified connection and supports unified oe/iscsi/nfs/cifs interfaces. It supports the file-level WORM retaining technology. The reliability of the cluster architecture where two active-standby engines are loosely coupled is limited. A faulty node failover interrupts services, and the failover time is long. Data cannot be shared among engines. The performance bottleneck caused by hotspot content access cannot be prevented. The WAFL file system is out of date. Due to the mechanism of the WAFL file system, when the space becomes smaller and smaller, the possibility of striping writing is greatly decreased, and the write penalty is greatly increased. As a result, the system performance is seriously affected. Hardware I/O expansion modules are not hot swappable, and expansion steps are complicated. Space is seriously wasted. At least two disks of each engine are used to store the configuration data during system running. NetApp does not allow users to store their own data in these two disks. The management is complicated. Each controller requires an independent management interface, that is, two controllers cannot be managed in the same interface. In the same storage device, the DST function cannot be implemented. The declared 3-tier DST is actually based on solutions but is not implemented in terms of functions. The business cost is high. The hardware is not self-developed. Therefore, the local service capability is low, and services are provided without guarantee.

N8500 Marketing Strategy (VS NetApp) Attacking policies Defending policies See the detailed competition analysis. Beat NetApp according to different scenarios and customers. In the tender, emphasize that NAS clustered nodes must be able to share all storage space and access the same directory at the same time. In the cluster architecture, the two active-standby engines are loosely coupled. When an engine is faulty, the failover time is long. Data cannot be shared between engines. The performance bottleneck caused by hotspot data access cannot be prevented. In the tender, emphasize the actual available capacity on condition that the performance is ensured. Mark the actual available storage space. Based on NetApp's optimal configuration and recommended configuration, the actual available space on the /SAS disks is 40%, and the actual available space on the SATA disks is 30%. This increases NetApp's business cost. Due to the mechanism of the WAFL file system, the spare space in the system must reach 20% so that the performance is not seriously affected. In the tender, emphasize that online expansion is supported on condition that services are not interrupted. Hardware I/O expansion modules are not hot swappable. If an I/O module is removed, the system is forcibly restarted. Expansion steps are complicated. In addition, during expansion, the system must be shut down. Do not compete with our competitor in terms of value-added software functions. Defending in terms of value-added software functions: Emphasize huawei's advantages in prices, localization services, and maintenance&warranty. The discounts of all huawei value-added software licenses are zeros. Engineers of huawei provide installation and acceptance on site. huawei provides three-year free software and hardware technical support (huawei) and after-sales services. NetApp charges customers twice as much as the license fee for all paid functions, and NetApp cannot provide the original manufacturer maintenance&warranty service. Do not compete with our competitor in terms of brand names or brand reputation. Defending in terms of brand names and brand reputation: Emphasize huawei's advantages in selfdevelopment, place or origin (made in China), and localization services (huawei).
