Good Afternoon, I am writing to let you know our HEAPS (Higher Education Adult Part-Time Student) grant is available for the new fiscal year 15. This grant is FREE to apply! I have attached the new HEAPS application for you as well. **A copy of High School diploma or GED as well as the application will need to be returned with your application.** The current maximum HEAPS award is $2000 per year. ***Example: If you are applying for the Red Hat class which is $400.00 you could apply for the $400.00 to cover the class. If you are applying for a medical billing and coding class which is $2095.00 you could apply for the full $2000.00. Leaving you with a balance of $95.00 to pay yourself if you were approved for the full amount. You will not receive any cash back on this grant. You apply for what the cost of the class is. *** Award Determination A student award amount is determined based upon need as defined by FAFSA. Awards can be up to the full-cost of training, not to exceed $2000. Awarding is done by the WV Higher Education Policy Commission and can take up to 3 to 4 weeks for determination. Please plan accordingly when applying for aid. Students will be notified of their award status by Pierpont Continuing Education once eligibility has been determined by the state. Students will then have up to 90 days to accept their award and begin their training program. Application Procedures As of the 2014-2015 academic year, the HEAPS application is now a 2-part process. Step 1: All students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA must be submitted online at: www.fafsa.ed.gov. Use Pierpont Community & Technical College's school code: 040385. Students under the age of 24 may be required to submit parental tax information unless they are determined "independent" per federal aid guidelines. You will be required to connect your federal tax (IRS) information to your FAFSA application (directions online). You must electronically sign your FAFSA using your PIN number. Step 2: After completing Step 1 (FAFSA), students must complete and submit the Pierpont Higher Education Adult Part-Time Student (HEAPS) Application. Student Eligibility A person is eligible for consideration for a grant through the workforce development component of HEAPS if the person: Demonstrates financial need for the funds. The applicant must complete an application for HEAPS Workforce Development Component as well as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Is a West Virginia resident and may not be considered a resident of any other state. State resident means a person who has lived in West Virginia continuously for a minimum of twelve months immediately preceding the date of application for HEAPS grant or renewal of a grant. Is a United States citizen or permanent resident thereof. Is not incarcerated in a correctional facility. Is not in default on a higher education loan. Is in compliance with Military Selective Service Act. Is making satisfactory progress at the time of application. * Satisfactory progress for a first time award means being accepted for enrollment by the institution the applicant plans to attend. Thereafter, satisfactory progress means continuous advancement toward completion of the program on the normal schedule established for that program. Students must apply directly to Pierpont Continuing Education. The application is checked for accuracy and then sent to the Higher Education Policy Commission Central Office. We will also need a copy of your High School Transcript or G.E.D. The WV HEPC then determines eligibility, and the College will contact the applicant to notify them of any grant funding awarded.
