RCTP Overview Discipline of Rehabilitation Counseling Employment Outlook Our Program Information

The Discipline of Rehabilitation Counseling (RC) RCs provide counseling related services (psychological & vocational counseling, advocacy, and case management to assist persons with disabilities/chronic illness meet their goals in the most integrated setting possible. Oldest counseling specialization (started in the 1920s). Developed to meet the needs of veterans of war with physical disabilities to assist them in returning to work. Today, RCs work with persons with a wide array of disabilities and chronic illnesses, in many different settings, and work as part of an interdisciplinary team with allied health and mental health professionals. Rehabilitation counselors are trained in the Biopsychosocial aspects of disability/chronic illness and learn about environmental barriers, assistive technology, and professional issues in the field.

Employment Outlook Settings employing RCs Private, non-profit agencies Public rehabilitation agencies Hospitals Veteran s Administration 2 and 4 year Colleges School-to-work Transition Programs. Substance Abuse Agencies Positive employment outlook for RCs. Nationwide, there is a high demand for RCs due to rising rates of persons with disabilities and chronic illness, projected wave of retirement of RCs, and returning war veterans. Graduates are employed within 3 months of graduation and salaries range from $45 $85 depending on the setting. Rehabilitation counselors are getting jobs much faster than other counseling professionals due to the high demand.

Our Program The Rehabilitation Counseling program at SFSU is excellent! The curriculum is very wellrounded encompassing cultural, psychosocial, theoretical, and practical aspects of disability. The integrated field placements not only gave me the chance to apply what I learned in the program, but it also gave me invaluable realworld experience that is directly applicable to my career. I would highly recommend this program to anyone considering a career in Rehabilitation Counseling. -Kerry Stamps, Class of May 2010 and Senior Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor/ Qualified Rehabilitation Professional at the Department of Rehabilitation, Oakland 60 unit program; students graduate in 2-3 years Scholarships Available ($4,500- &5,500 per year) Our students are employed within 3 months of graduation

Our Program Many people think that Rehab Counselors only work with prisoners and drug addicts. While that can be true, the larger context of rehabilitation is to improve the quality of life for people whose potential has been limited by a wide array of factors including: legal problems, drug and alcohol addiction, mental health issues or living with a physical disability in a society that is not always accommodating. The SF State Rehab Counseling Program provides a broad basis for understanding rehabilitation issues and technical information, counseling theory, and practical experience for approaching solutions. Maureen Fitzgerald, Class of May 2010 Students have the option of getting trained in another specialization Students are positioned to become Certified Rehabilitation Counselors (CRC) and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCC) Students have access to a large network of rehabilitation professionals and settings
