2 The Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). This is the first mental health counseling program in New Jersey to be CACREP accredited. Accreditation is a significant consideration for the New Jersey State Board of Examiners for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Psychological & Mental Health Counseling Demographic research indicates that growing societal problems will increase the demand for human service employees who understand the dynamics and psychological implications of modern crises. Monmouth University offers dynamic graduate programs in counseling to equip students with the theoretical foundations and practical applications vital to positions in human service and mental health agencies. Over 85 percent of the graduates of our programs find employment in the field within six months of graduation; for graduates of the Master of Science (MS) in Mental Health Counseling program this statistic is even higher. Our active alumni network and social media network are key tools that connect students and graduates with many prospective employers. In addition, we place student interns in more than 100 mental health agencies and institutions, and in many cases our students obtain employment at these organizations after graduation. Many field supervisors at these agencies are graduates of Monmouth s programs. In this 60-credit program, students complete a core curriculum covering areas of study required for LPC licensure in New Jersey. This program is also a good option for those who may move to another state and seek LPC licensure. In addition, the program provides 9 credits of elective courses in which you can pursue specialty areas and further enhance your counseling expertise. This program can be completed in as few as six semesters, including summer sessions. The Master of Arts (MA) in Psychological Counseling is a 30-credit program focusing on counseling techniques, assessment methods, mental health, and community counseling issues. The core curriculum provides participants with a solid foundation in counseling procedure. Students can explore current practices in the field through 9 credits of guided electives. By combining academic course work with experiential study, the MA in Psychological Counseling equips you with proficiencies in traditional counseling as well as in emerging areas. The MA program is an excellent option for students who do not plan to seek a counseling license or for those who plan to pursue a PhD. 3 In addition, Monmouth offers a 33-credit Addiction Studies Track within the MA program. This track prepares students to become addiction counselors who work with individuals, groups, couples, and families impacted by various types of substance use and addictive disorders. Graduates are prepared to work within a variety of addiction treatment programs and agencies and eventually to practice privately. The addiction studies track was developed to meet the educational requirements for the Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC), which is a New Jersey state license. The program is accredited by the International Coalition of Addiction Studies Education (INCASE) and by the National Addiction Studies Accreditation Committee (NASAC). The Professional Counseling Certificate is an 18-credit, post-baccalaureate certificate for students who are enrolled in, or have graduated from, a CACREPaccredited counselor education program but did not complete the 60 credits required for LPC licensing. 4 The quality of the MS program is impressive, and the courses I took helped me land an internship in an agency where I am still working today as the clinical director. Even after graduation, the professors made themselves available to assist with professional issues or questions that arose.
