JWOC 2015 Rauland - Norway

Welcome to Rauland and Telemark! Telemark County Council is very positive to the proposal for organizing the Junior World Orienteering Championship in Rauland in 2015, and would like to assist involved partners in the planning and implementation phases. Terje Riis-Johansen, county mayor, Telemark County The application for the Junior World Orienteering Championships for 2015 in Rauland has the full support from the Vinje Municipality. Rauland is an important part of the municipality with various sports activities and we look forward to host the championships in the area. We will do our best to support the event and cooperate with the national and local organisers. We look forward to welcome you in Rauland! Arne Vinje, mayor, Vinje municipality Organizers The Norwegian Orienteering Federation will organize the JWOC event together with local clubs Porsgrunn OL and IL Dyre Vaa. Porsgrunn OL, Porsgrunn (www.porsgrunnol.no) One of the largest and oldest special sports clubs for orienteering in the country, with around 310 members. More than 2000 participants are realistic. The very first SG-competition in 1965 took place close to the JWOC-2015 area (Høydalsmo), and the same venue and area will be used for the first spectator race. This will be a remarkable 50 year anniversary!

Terrains The terrains in Rauland mainly have good runnability, but still interesting and challenging orienteering. Competitions will probably take place from three different competition centres: Sprint area (Åmot): Urban sprint terrain with roads, streets, camping site, tracks, cycle roads and large complex buildings. Quite hilly, some smaller forest areas. 500-550 m altitude. Forest area Rauland (I): Equal parts of terrain types 1 & 2. Sometimes technically difficult due to many map details or reduced visibility combined with few map details. 700-900 m altitude Forest area Rauland (II): Terrain types 1, 2, 3 and 4. Sometimes technically difficult due to many map details or steep slopes. 750-1100 m altitude. Terrain types: 1. Birch mountain forest with open and semi-open marches. Varying hilliness and difficulty, excellent runnability. 2. Spruce and pine mountain forest. Varying hilliness, difficulty and runnability. 3. Mountain area above the tree-level with challenging route choices due to steepness and runnability. 4. Mountain slopes with alpine tracks, cabins and apartment buildings. 5. Sprint terrain in Åmot. Urban area with challenging route-choices due to height differences.

Map and course team The map makers will include some of the best in Norway, e.g., former world champion Morten Berglia. The course team will include some of the best coursesetters in Norway, e.g. head of map and courses for NOC 2005, Thore Kornmo. Anders Nordberg and Anne Margrethe Hausken Nordberg will also take part in the course setting. Accommodation and prices Accommodation will be at Vierli Tourist centre, a mountain cabin village. In the area there are beds for 265 participants and leaders. The remaining participants and leaders will be located at Rauland Høgfjellshotell in 5-9 person apartments. The distance between the two locations is 2 km. Lowest cost will be approximately 1250 NOK per person for the entire period (8 nights), but without meals. All cabins or flats are fully equipped for self service accommodation. Accommodation with full board will be around 3500 NOK (Vierli tourist centre) and 4500 NOK (Rauland høgfjellshotell) per person. Rauland s wide selection of accommodation ranges from top of the line luxury to the budget-minded, including hotels, cabins, apartments, mountain lodge & motels and camping. In total, spectators and participants in Sørlandgaloppen will be able to find suitable accommodation in the area. Embargoed area in Rauland
