Child Applied Science Degree Program at Harold Washington College ü (AAS) ü Associate in Arts (AA) ü Advanced Certificate (AC) Trained teacher aides can assist in providing a healthy environment for the growth and development of young children in residential child care facilities, in infant/toddler, pre school, or schoolage settings. For men and women who are interested in working with young children and who possess the personal qualities of warmth and understanding needed to succeed in the fi eld of child development, Harold Washington College offers degree and certifi cate programs combining academic work with practical experience. The HWC Child Program can prepare students for immediate employment as teacher aides or for transfer to a senior college. Those already employed in the fi eld are urged to enroll in specifi c courses for job advancement or personal enrichment. Career & Employment Possibilities Graduates of the Harold Washington College program will have met the educational requirements to qualify as private day care teacher/directors, or as child care workers and teacher aides in most child care programs. CHILD DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE (CDA) TRAINING The CDA credential is a nationally recognized, competency-based early childhood credential, granted to qualifi ed candidates by the Council for Professional Recognition. Requirements include experience, education, and documentation of competency. The Human Services/ CDA unit provides guidance, training, and education to referred candidates to meet all requirements of the Council. Candidates include staff of Head Start programs, childcare programs, and family childcare homes. RECOMMENDED AREAS OF SUPPORTING COURSE WORK Those interested in careers in child development should develop a strong background in English composition; psychology, especially general and child psychology; sociology, especially Introduction to the Study of Society (Soc. 201) and Marriage & the Family (Soc. 20). DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES The Child Program s specially designed laboratory/ classroom will enable students to become familiar with early childhood toys and equipment; experiment with classroom design; participate in and observe creative art, music and play experiences and teaching methods suitable for the young child.
