Course Description Modern businesses are aware and knowledgeable of sustainability management. The challenge however is how best to translate this knowledge into practical and tools-based skills to make sustainability more meaningful and work to the competitive advantage of business. Bridging this gap, the certificate course on Applied Sustainability Management in Asia Pacific (ASMAP) is a pioneering multidisciplinary program that will blend sustainability concepts with ASMAP live, visceral and tools-based business management practices. In this manner, the course participants are expected to bring home concrete business solutions to everyday sustainability challenges.

Module Description Sustainability 101 Managers need to have a foundational understanding of sustainability, both from theoretical and practical standpoints, to exploit the opportunities inherent in this business concept. So while a lot of meaningful information already exists, it is quite fragmented. This module is designed to examine the landscape of major sustainability principles, frameworks, and schools of thought that have been developed over the past decades. In this way, managers will have a common understanding of the interdependence of the various streams of sustainability. Project Management for Sustainability Initiatives Project management provides a framework to help accomplish goals identified in the sustainability strategy of the company. Unfortunately, it is often the case that poor project management can result in serious problems in sustainability interventions due to lack of support, poor budgeting, poor scoping and control. To avoid this mistake, the module will impart to sustainability managers how to spearhead every stage of a sustainability project, from developing goals and objectives to managing project teams. Managers will learn the essential steps in defining goals, setting up project plans, assigning and scheduling work, monitoring progress and exercising control to achieve the desire project results. Integrating Sustainability in Business Processes and Culture Companies that have adopted a culture of sustainability are learning that it is rapidly becoming a competitive advantage. Despite this, sustainability is not yet fully integrated into the decision-making processes at many companies. This module aims to help managers incorporate sustainability into their company s core business strategy to attain the same level of relevance and influence as other business functions. Through actual cases, the module will identify how managers can help drive profitability and innovation, mitigate risks, and increase employee and community stakeholder engagement through sustainability activities. Effective Strategies for Sustainability Communication A vital component of any sustainability strategy is communication. This can help put into context and optimize the value of change necessary to implement the sustainability strategy. The module aims to assist managers devise a sustainability communications plan and ensure that it is aligned and integrated with the broader corporate communications activity.

Sustainability Program Impact and Evaluation Evaluation is key to assessing the merits of sustainability initiatives. High quality and tailor fit evaluation can provide guidance and access to company decision makers in terms of providing solid content and learning from past experiences. In turn, this knowledge could strengthen service delivery, planning and allocation of resources and accountability for future sustainability programs. This module will impart techniques and instruments on how to continually manage, track and measure progress, performance and impact of sustainability interventions. Sustainability Disclosure and Reporting using International Reporting Standards Sustainability reporting is the process of measuring and disclosing the company s nonfinancial performance -- economic, environmental and social. In many parts of the world, sustainability reporting is becoming a norm with stakeholders demanding more accurate disclosures. But companies would also want to capitalize on disclosures to enhance brand, reputation and operational efficiencies. Managing these varying interests require planning and governance in sustainability reporting. This module is intended to appraise company managers with the trends in globally accepted reporting standards such as the use of the latest Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines and the International Integrated Reporting Committee (IIRC) principles in order to formulate credible and high-quality sustainability disclosures and reports. Special and Emerging Sustainability Topics The field of sustainability management is constantly evolving, This module is designed for the managers to learn about the emerging issues and strategies leading companies are employing in tackling them. Through get-together sessions with UA&P experts and eminent industry experts, several topics will be explored in depth, such as (but not necessarily limited to): How an ASEAN-wide code of conduct in business and development practice can contribute to inclusive business Communicating sustainability: how sustainability reporting can be a platform for compliance and competitive advantage The latest in company-based natural resources management systems Global development trends and its implications to doing business in the ASEAN region How to build green and sustainable jobs and human resource development in ASEAN Industrial relations best practices in ASEAN Operationalizing the voluntary principles on security and human rights Public Expenditures Tracking System (PETS) and its relevance to tracking corporate sustainability initiatives Best practices in public-private partnerships to improve corporate social services delivery at the local level Sustainable security practices for companies operating in tribal and conflict zones
