THE ECFE CLASS EXPERIENCE 1. Together Time Class begins with parent/child activities designed to enhance your child s learning. You will also get ideas for things you can do together at home. 2. Parents Time Parents participate in a discussion led by a licensed parent educator. The discussion is based on the Minnesota Department of Education s core curriculum areas of parent development, parent-child relationship, early childhood development, family development and culture and community. 3. Children s Time While parents are in the discussion group, children are learning through activities designed by a licensed Early Childhood teacher to help them grow and develop socially, emotionally, cognitively, physically and in their communication skills. ECFE PARENT ADVISORY COUNCILS ECFE Parent Advisory Councils In Minneapolis ECFE, our Parent Advisory Councils are a highly valued resource. Parents who are program participants are welcome to join their area Parent Advisory Council (PAC). The Parent Advisory Councils meet monthly to advise and support Minneapolis ECFE. New members are always welcome. This is a wonderful opportunity to enhance the program and make connections with other ECFE families! INFANT CLASSES (0-18 MONTHS) We wish to congratulate you on the birth of your baby! As your child s your parenting journey. Join a licensed parent educator and other new parents to learn about: For a complimentary class, call 612.668.2127 today! There will be time to discuss the joys and challenges of having a baby and all the adjustments of adding a new member to your family. Class Descriptions New Parent Connection/Infant Massage Non-separating (child and parent together for entire class) This is a great place to start in ECFE. We ll discuss topics such as sleep, eating patterns, calming techniques and adjustments to parenting. Parents will learn infant massage techniques and play activities for young babies. (These classes are half a semester with two sessions offered each semester register for one or both) Incredible Infants Non-separating (child and parent together for entire class) Experience music and play activities that enhance your infant s development. Parent discussions will focus on topics of interest to new parents such as sleep, nutrition, child development, temperament, adjustments to parenting and safety. The early childhood staff engages the children in planned activities while parents gather nearby in the same room for parent discussion. TODDLERS AND TWOS CLASSES (12-36 MONTHS) Class Descriptions Age Ranges and Schedules Toddlers Ages: 12-24 Months Non-separating (child and parent together for entire class) Day Time Location This class is for parents and toddlers who are not quite ready to separate. Parent-child interaction will give you a chance to spend some uninterrupted time together participating in developmentally appropriate activities. Thursday 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Longfellow Parent discussion led by a licensed parent educator will move to a section of the room while staff continues to assist your children in exploring the classroom and all it has to offer. Toddlers Play and Learn with Gym Time Ages: 12-24 Months Non-separating (child and parent together for entire class) This non-separating class is taught by a licensed parent educator who will provide fun learning activities for parents Saturday 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Longfellow and toddlers both in the classroom and early childhood gym. In addition there will be opportunities to discuss parenting questions and concerns. Toddlers - Gradual Separation (Child and parent spend time together and practice spending time apart) Ages: 18-24 Months Monday 9:00-11:00 a.m. Wilder Are you and your toddlers ready to meet new friends, spend time together and practice spending time apart? Staff will support parents and children in learning to separate in a respectful, flexible manner. TODDLERS AND TWOS CLASSES (12-36 MONTHS) Class Descriptions Toddlers and Twos Independence, temper tantrums and sheer exuberance are all part of life with toddlers and twos. After participating in developmentally appropriate early childhood activities, parents will separate to discuss child development, temperament, routines, behavior guidance and other topics based on participant needs and interests. Class Descriptions Preschool STEM* *Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Does your child like to build and try to figure out how things work? Classroom activities will encourage problem-solving skills and explore the why behind how things work. Parent education topics will focus on ways parents can support their budding engineer. This class is aligned with the MPS STEM program and the Minnesota math and science standards. Steps to Kindergarten Success Classroom activities will be geared to kindergarten readiness skills and parent discussion will focus on how to foster those readiness skills in the months leading up to the first day of school. PRESCHOOL CLASSES (36 MONTHS - KINDERGARTEN ENROLLMENT) Child must be at least 3 years old by Sept. 1, 2014. Class Descriptions Prime Time for Preschoolers Children will discover a world of learning and friendship in our preschool classroom. Parent discussion will focus on child development, temperament, discipline, school readiness and all things relevant in the life of a preschooler. Kindergarten Ready:Learning Thru Play A non-separating class that will focus on readiness skills that parents and children can work on together. A parent educator will answer questions and provide resources to insure children are ready for the first day of school. Age Ranges and Schedules Ages: 36 Months - Kindergarten Enrollment Day Time Location Monday 1:00-3:00 p.m. Cityview Children Entering Kindergarten Fall 2015 Half Semester classes 1/22-3/26 or 4/9-6/4 Thursday 1:00-3:00 p.m. Cityview MIXED AGE CLASSES Class Descriptions Adventures in Parenting Parent discussion will focus on child development, school readiness, temperament, guiding behavior and sibling relationships. Additional topics are determined by parent needs/interest and teacher suggestions. MIXED AGE CLASSES Class Descriptions Multicultural Adventures in Parenting (English and Somali) This separating class is for English and Somali speakers with Somali language assistance provided. Parent discussion will focus on a variety of child development, parenting and school readiness issues from differing cultural perspectives. Brain Rules- Raising Smart and Happy Children brain development and how to use this information to support your child s learning and development. Daytime Dads This unique offering examines the personal and societal attitudes facing at-home dads. Parent discussion will focus on child development, school readiness, temperament, guiding behavior and sibling relationships. We work in partnership with other MPS and community programs to meet families where they are. Each partnership is unique and helps us reach young families in different ways.
