International Projects 1. Simulation of surface instability of a liquid pool subjected to a shear flow (by Nurdan Yildirim). The project has been done at Environmental and Applied Fluid Dynamics Department of Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) Rhode Saint Genese, Belgium in 2005, supervised by Prof. Dr. Jean-Marie Buchlin and Prof. Dr. Carlo Benocci. Abstract: In this theoretical and numerical project, the physical mechanisms leading to the production of surface waves generated at the interface of two fluids (liquid/gas or liquid/liquid) are investigated. A particular attention is devoted to the Kelvin-Helmholtz type instability appearing in the area of high shear located at the fluid-fluid interface. The subsequent disturbances in velocity and pressure associated with the wave motion are assumed 2D and sufficiently small to justify the linearization of the equations of the motion. Navier- Stokes, Orr-Sommerfeld, Kelvin-Helmholtz Darcy (KHD) equations are mainly considered to investigate the surface instability. During the project, the main characteristics of surface instability such as wavelength, amplitude, wave speed and growth rate are investigated according to various physical parameters (density, surface tension, dynamic viscosity) of the fluids. The effect of the gravity is analysed through 2D simulations configurations of horizontal flow as well as vertical coand counter flow configurations. FFT analysis is providing the values of the dominant frequency and wavelength. This last quantity is compared when the fluids are in the linear instability regime with KHD theory. In spite of difficulties to extract the FFT contents, the results are matching well with the theory for horizontal case. Prediction of the unstable region characteristics is possible with this methodology together with the correct prediction of the transition of the waves from linear to non-linear regime. For vertical flow, the representation of the gravity field with the periodic assumption is presenting a numerical difficulty to keep a constant mass flow rate for each individual phase. 2. Modelling of District Heating System for IZTECH Campus, Turkey (by Nurdan Yildirim). The project has been done at Geothermal Training Program of United Nations University, Reykjavik-Iceland in 2002, supervised by Prof. Dr. Páll Valdimarsson (University of Iceland). Abstract: The aim of this work is to determine best heating system for Izmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH) Campus. IZTECH, founded in 1992, is the third university of Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey. IZTECH campus has individual fuel boiler heating systems for each faculty building since its foundation and the campus is still under development. In this project three different district heating systems were studied and compared, using two different heating strategies, intermittent and semi-intermittent heating. Mathematical models were derived with programs using Matlab and EES (Engineering Equation Solver) written and run using hourly weather data. In all, 50 heating alternatives with different parameters were studied to determine the best heating system. The performance of these alternatives was studied, regarding efficiency and estimated indoor temperature, and recommendations are made. Besides heating system simulations, a network simulation was made using the software Pipelab, which uses the Matlab program as a basis. 5

(The Impact of Thermal Comfort on the Building Energy Consumption for ClimaticRegions of Turkey). This project was funded by Turkish Society of HVAC and Sanitary Engineers (TTMD) during 2008-2010 and presented 10th REHVA World Congress, Clima2010, Antalya, Turkey, (9-12 May, 2010). Abstract:Turkey is revising its legislations on building energy performance as foreseen in EPBD (2002/92/EC), through the European Union accession process. Therefore, there has been a growing interest in the evaluation of the heating/cooling energy consumption for buildings. The assessment of the energy consumption for the climatic control of a building can only be dealt with if the level of the indoor comfort is clearly defined. Since energy consumption for heating/cooling is directly affected by the required level of thermal comfort, the study aims to investigate the relationship between thermal comfort and energy consumption of the residential buildings for different climatic regions of Turkey. Once a range of required acceptable indoor operative temperatures had been fixed in accordance with Fanger s theory, the monthly averages of hourly comfort conditions and the energy consumptions were estimated through dynamic simulations for continues and intermittent operating modes. (Evaluation of Geothermal Energy Projects in Turkey in the Context of the Clean Energy Assessment: Balcova Geothermal District Heating System-Izmir and Kizildere Geothermal Power Plant-Denizli). This project was funded by TUBITAK. Chapter 2 ( (Jeotermal Uygulamaların Çevresel Etkileri (Environmental Impacts of Geothermal Applications)) and Chapter 9 (Çevresel Etki Değerlendirme (Environmental Impact Assessment)) were prepared by Nurdan Yildirim in 2008. Abstract: Geothermal energy applications either electricity generation or heating have positive and negative physical, chemical, biological and social-economical effects on the environment. To present these effects with an example Kızıldere Geothermal Power Plant and Balcova Geothermal District Heating System are chosen as the main application areas of geothermal energy. The aim of the project is to assess the environmental impacts of both applications. Depending on their source temperature and the process, the impacts exhibit difference. The result of data acquisition, chemical analysis and measurements gives us the pollution potential of both applications. Environmental effects, especially at geothermal power plants which use high temperature geothermal fluids, can be reduced by applying Environmental Impact Assessment at design stage and/or can be avoided by a careful project management at 6
operation stage. Depending on pollution potential, during the application and operational stage of the projects, the necessity of Environmental Impact Assessment process is emphasised.
