SCHOOL OF NURSING APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS ACCELERATED SECOND-DEGREE BSN PROGRAM Admission to Oakland University is required in order to be eligible for admission to the School of Nursing. Contact the Office of Admission, 101 North Foundation Hall, (248) 370-3360 for information. The courses listed in Sections A, B and C needs to be completed in order for the SON Application to be processed. Application deadlines for admission to the Accelerated Second-Degree BSN program are: FALL (SEPTEMBER) Riverview Institute Deadline Date: August 15 WINTER (JANUARY) Riverview Institute Deadline Date: December 15 SUMMER (MAY) Riverview Institute Deadline Date: April 15 ADMISSION CRITERIA Students must be in good standing at the University to qualify for admission to the School of Nursing. Note that completion of minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the Accelerated Second Degree BSN program. School of Nursing applications are processed when the applicant has all pre-nursing coursework completed. (Sections A, B, and C). Admission into the Accelerated Second Degree BSN program is competitive. Completion of minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. When grades are submitted for courses listed in A through C, the application will be processed. The courses listed in sections D and E are not required to submit an application to the School of Nursing and are taken by students after receiving conditional admission to the Accelerated Second Degree Program. A. Complete the following required pre-nursing courses or transfer equivalents with a grade of at least a 2.8 and maintain a minimum overall pre-nursing grade point average of 3.20. Please note: These courses will be used in the calculation of your pre-nursing grade point average. BIO 111 Biology (4) BIO 121 Clinical Anatomy and Physiology (5) (OR BIO 205 and BIO 206 and BIO 207 - Human Anatomy, Lab and Human Physiology) Note: A maximum of 5 credits for this course will be used in the calculation of your Prenursing grade point average if you have completed equivalent coursework. CHM 104 Introduction to Chemical Principles (4) CHM 201 Introduction to Organic and Biological Chemistry (4) PSY 100 Foundations of Contemporary Psychology (4) B. Complete one of the following courses with a minimum grade of 2.8. Please note: The grade for the philosophy course you have completed will not be included in the calculation of your pre-nursing grade point average. PHL 101 Introduction to Philosophy (4) PHL 102 Introduction to Logic (4) PHL 103 Introduction to Ethics (4) PHL 107 Introduction to Symbolic Logic (4) PHL 204 Introduction to Ancient Greek Philosophy (4) PHL 205 Introduction to Medieval Philosophy (4) PHL 206 Introduction to Early Modern Philosophy (4) C. Complete MTH 061 or MTH 011with a minimum grade of 3.2. Please note: This requirement is waived for students who receive a score of 18 or higher on the mathematics subsection of the American College Test (ACT) or who have taken an Oakland University Placement Test and have placed into MTH 062 or MTH 012 or higher. If enrolled in MTH 061 or MTH 011, the grade received will not be included in the calculation of the pre-nursing grade point average. When grades are submitted for courses listed in A through C, the application will be processed.

The following three courses are also required nursing courses, which must be completed prior to the first semester of the program. A minimum grade of 2.5 is required in each of these courses. NRS 221 Nursing Informatics (2) NRS 227 Pathophysiology in Nursing (3) (Prerequisite or Corequisite: BIO 307) NRS 308 Pharmacology in Nursing (3) (Prerequisite: BIO 307 and NRS 227) F. GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENT All courses required to satisfy the Oakland University general education requirement must be completed prior to the accelerated program semester of admission. NOTE: The nursing curriculum is based upon full-time study. Students must complete all BSN designated course requirements for each level of the nursing program before continuing into the next semester of the program. APPLICATION PROCEDURES 1. Students who wish to be considered for admission to the Accelerated Second Degree BSN program should complete and submit this application prior to the application deadline date. It is recommended that applicants make a copy of all application materials being submitted. Applicants should either submit the application packet to the School of Nursing in Person or via the United States Postal Service (trackable mail is strongly recommended www.usps.com ). 2. A goal statement of 500 to 1,000 words in which you discuss the reasons why you wish to pursue a second baccalaureate degree, with attention given to your professional goals and experience, and the contributions you expect to make to the profession of nursing. If you are an Oakland University student, your grades will be inserted on your application as soon as they are available. TRANSFER GRADE CONVERSIONS Records of students transferring to Oakland University from other academic institutions are evaluated and a Plan of Study is prepared. s for transfer courses do not appear on the Oakland University transcript. However, for the purposes of admission to the School of Nursing, grades for pre-nursing courses taken at other institutions are included in the pre-nursing GPA. Letter grades are converted as follows: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B=3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0. REPEATING COURSES Students may repeat a course to improve the grade earned in a prior enrollment at Oakland University, but they must do so at Oakland University. The limit is three attempts at any individual non-nursing course and two attempts at any individual nursing course, excluding drops or withdrawals. The repeat course must be taken on the same grading basis (numeric or pass/fail) as the first attempt. Because some programs have more stringent limits, students should consult an adviser before registering to repeat a course. Students should be aware that the most recent grade will be the grade of record regardless of whether it is the highest grade earned.
