The Dental Hygiene Program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, and has been granted the accreditation status of approval without reporting. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. The Dental Hygiene Program offers a curriculum that provides the students with academic instruction to achieve eligibility for the National Board of Dental Hygiene Examiners written examination, and the California State Board Examination for licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist. Upon completion of the Dental Hygiene Program and the general education requirements, the graduate will be eligible for an Associate of Science Degree from. Students who have previously obtained either an Associate of Science, Bachelor, or Master Degree and have completed the Dental Hygiene Program requirements will be eligible for a Certificate in Dental Hygiene. Program Goal The goal of the Dental Hygiene Program is to provide the student with the educational opportunity to attain the knowledge, skills and values necessary to qualify for licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist and a professional member of the allied health team. Outcomes Objectives 1. 1. To educate dental hygiene students in the ethical, legal, and competent practice of dental hygiene. 2. 2. To educate dental hygiene students in the areas of disease prevention and oral health promotion 3. 3. To facilitate dental hygiene students involvement in community projects. 4. 4. To promote professional growth, development, and an appreciation for scholarly activity. 5. 5. To ensure the dental hygiene student provides optimal patient care. Minimum Standards to Apply 1. 1. Eligible for admission to. 2. 2. High School graduation or passing of the General Educational Development tests (GED) or passing of high school proficiency. 3. 3. A minimum of a 2.5 GPA in ALL college work attempted and a 3.0 GPA in the science prerequisites. 4. 4. Evidence of good physical and mental health as determined by medical

examination upon admission to the program and prior to program enrollment. 5. 5. Four (4) science courses must be completed prior to application and all others must be in progress. (See below C.2.) 6. 6. Three (3) General Education courses must be completed prior to application and all others must be in progress. Page 1 of 5 Students must demonstrate by laboratory testing and medical examination no contagious disease, such as: active Tuberculosis, or Hepatitis carrier with e antigen. Attendance in the Dental Hygiene Program s laboratory and clinical courses would be denied based upon CDC regulations and invasive exposure-prone procedures. Please discuss health concerns with a Health Science counselor before application. Application Procedure 1. Application packets must be completed online during the month of February. Please see the Health Science Application link on the Dental Hygiene home page. 2. Applicants must submit in person: o Signature page of the application o Official transcripts (except Cypress and Fullerton Colleges) o Photo identification Health Science Applications Office, Health Science Building/TE3,, 9200 Valley View St., Cypress, 9030-5897 3. Determination of acceptance is based upon the selection criteria. (See specifics on next page.) 4. PLEASE NOTE: F-1 visa students will not be accepted for admission into any program when applications by qualified U.S. citizens exceed space available. Prerequisites and Requirements The following courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C and an over-all GPA of 2.5. Once a passing grade is achieved and program application requirements are met, courses may not be repeated for a higher grade. 1. Science Prerequisites: Only two (2) sciences can be in progress at the time of application and must be completed by the end of the spring semester. All science courses must be completed within five years of filing the first eligible application, and with an overall GPA of 3.0.

Additional English Writing Courses Completed: Three (3) points will be given for each course completed with a minimum C grade. = Maximum 15 Credit will be given for a three (3) semester unit English writing course, at the minimum level of English 100 or above. Total Points Maximum 100 In compliance with the Board of Dental Examiners, Committee on Dental Auxiliaries, all applicants for California Dental Hygiene licensure must (1) successfully complete the Board Examination, and (2) have no criminal record, or the board must determine that a past criminal record poses no threat to the public health, safety, or welfare. Finger printing is required and checked through the Department of Justice and/or the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The applicant must report on the Application for Licensure, any convictions or pleas of nolo contendere, even if the conviction was dismissed. Making a false statement on an application, regarding a past conviction, is cause for denial of a license, regardless of the nature of the crime or how long ago it occurred. NOTE: Acceptance is based on a signed written response from the applicant selected, and followed by mandatory attendance at an orientation. Students will be required to pass a formal background check before placement in affiliated hospitals/clinics.
