BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PROFILE Rui Amaral Mendes graduated from the University of Porto, Faculty of Dental Medicine, in 2000. His private clinical activity has been carried out at IMEDGaia (Medical Institute of Gaia) since 2000, where he is currently Clinical Director. In March 2004, he started his Doctoral Program at the University of Porto (Faculty of Dental Medicine), in the area of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Medicine. In the end of 2009 he was given the opportunity to pursue his doctoral thesis at the VU University Amsterdam, which became a reality in January 2010, when the College of Deans of the VU University Amsterdam accepted his application for admission to the Doctorate. Since August 2003 he has been actively collaborating, as a volunteer, with the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Doctors of the World, within the scope of the project Porto Escondido, integrating the medical team responsible for providing primary health care services to the homeless population of the city of Porto and the illegal immigrants detained at the center of the Department of Immigration. In May 2005 he was appointed Fellow of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In September 2006, in Barcelona, he was given Full Membership of the European Association of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery. In December 2006 he was accepted as a Fellow (in Training) of the International Academy of Oral Oncology. In May 2009, he was invited to join the Research Interest Group of "Head & Neck Oncology of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. In November 2009 he was selected as Consultant/Assistant reviewer of the World Workshop of Oral Medicine and assigned to Group 1 - Genetics/epigenetics of oral mucosal premalignancy. He has published 3 poetry books: Pleroma (2005), Na Luz do Crespúsculo (2006), and Do Fundo do Silêncio (2007).
