Required Credentials 1. A completed electronic application. (Please note that applicants names on the application must appear exactly the same as on applicants passports. Program Information The LEAP program enables students with a minimum of a bachelor s degree in a liberal arts or other field to satisfy undergraduate engineering requirements and earn a master s degree in biomedical, computer, electrical, manufacturing, materials science and engineering, mechanical, photonics and systems. Graduates of the program are prepared for immediate professional employment or doctoral-level study. Part-time or full-time study is possible. For admission consideration, applicants must have completed at least one semester in college of calculus for math and science majors and received a grade of B or higher. AP course credit does not fulfill this requirement. The core curriculum consists of regular undergraduate courses covering topics such as computer programming, electric circuit theory, signals and systems, electronics, logic design, probability and statistics, and other science or mathematics courses as individually necessary. Full-time students with appropriate preparation in mathematics, science, and engineering-related subjects may complete Phase I of the LEAP program in one year. After successfully completing a designated core curriculum, students have sufficient background to apply for graduate study within one of the Master of Engineering degree programs, which is Phase II of LEAP. Students must have at least a 3.2 GPA in order to be guaranteed admission to the Master of Engineering program. Academic Standards Students in a graduate program at the College of Engineering must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in order to graduate. Academic Counseling Individually tailored programs of study are arranged for each participant after conference with his or her faculty advisor. Eligibility Students who have a minimum of a bachelor s degree in the liberal arts or another field that does not qualify them for direct admission to any of the College s Master of Engineering programs are eligible to apply to LEAP. For admission consideration, applicants must have completed at least one semester in college of calculus for math and science majors and received a grade of B or higher. Criteria for Selection Participants are selected on the strength of their academic preparation, the degree to which the program matches their career goals and aspirations, and evidence of their commitment to the program. Support Services The full range of Boston University services, including the Career Development Office, the Housing Office, and Student Health Services are available to LEAP students. Financial Assistance International students are not eligible for LEAP financial aid and must present financial documentation with their application. LEAP students who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents or who have refugee status and have demonstrated need via completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and are eligible for the Federal Direct Stafford subsidized loan will be considered for LEAP scholarship. Postbachelor s PhD students are required to declare the MS degree upon fulfillment of the degree requirements of their department. In addition, a minimum of 32 graduate credits and the completion of a dissertation are required for the postmaster s PhD portion of the program. Post-master s PhD program: Applicants who hold a master s degree (or will at the time of matriculation) are eligible to apply for a postmaster s PhD program. Students entering the post-master s PhD program are required to enroll for a minimum of 32 graduate credits and to complete a dissertation. Additional Financial Information for International Applicants Financial Information International students must make arrangements for travel to and from Boston and have adequate financial resources (including tuition and living expenses) for at least one year at Boston University. Financial aid such as fellowships, scholarships, and assistantships are available to international students, but awards are determined on the basis of merit instead of financial need. (Please see the Financial Resources sections for more detailed information on the types of awards available.) If you wish to be considered for any of these forms of financial aid, please complete the Financial Aid Application section of the application. To be considered for financial aid, applications must be submitted no later than December 15 for the fall semester and October 1 for the spring semester. A limited number of appointments to teaching fellowships and assistantships are available to qualified international students with superior fluency in English. International students will be considered for graduate teaching fellowships only if their IELTS score is 7.0 or higher or their TOEFL score is 600 or higher on the written exam or 250 or higher on the computer-based exam or 100 or higher on the new Internet Based Test (ibt) and their verbal score on the general GRE is at least 155 using the new GRE scoring format or 450 using the old GRE scoring format. Listed below are types of funding and the particular documents required for each type of funding. Please locate the type of funding you will be receiving and review the required documents. If you will be funded by your parents or a relative, please submit: 1. An original, signed letter of sponsorship which indicates that your sponsor (mother, father, uncle, or brother for example) is willing and able to support you financially for your academic fees and living expenses throughout the duration of your studies at Boston University. 2. An official bank statement or credit reference from a bank stating the availability of the minimum estimated expenses (as indicated on the Estimate of Expense sheet enclosed). This document should be in English, and the sum should be indicated in U.S. dollars. If you will be funded by your government, an organization, a company, etc., the sponsor must submit an official letter of sponsorship which states: 1. That your funding is valid for Boston University specifically. 2. What expenses will be covered. For example: academic fees, living expenses (how much), health insurance, financial support for family members, travel costs, etc. Amounts should be in U.S. dollars. 3. The length of time of the support. If you will be funded by a bank loan, you must submit an official letter of certification from the lending institution. Amounts should be in U.S. dollars. If you will be funded by a Salary or Study-leave allowance, you must submit an official letter from your employer validating this information. Amounts should be in U.S. dollars. If you will be funded in a manner not listed above (for example, if you will fund yourself), you must submit original, official documentation (a bank statement or a credit reference from a bank) that clearly states the amount of funds available. Additional Visa Information for International Applicants Visa Documentation In addition to documentation of financial support, international students who are currently in the U.S. or have been in the U.S. during the past six months are required to submit dark, legible copies of their most recent visa documents. 1. Personal data pages of your passport including the page that indicates the passport expiration date. 2. Copy of the front and reverse side of your most recent I-94 card (usually small card stapled into your passport). Please make certain that the copy reflects the red INS stamp on the I-94 card. 3. Copy of the most recent visa stamp in your passport (if applicable). 4. Students currently on an F-1 visa must also submit copies of their current, and all previous, I-20s, SEVIS pages 1 and 3. 5. All students currently in the U.S. must include a valid overseas mailing address in the International Student Information section of the application. Please refer to the list below for additional documents required according to the type of visa you hold: F-1 student visa: Copy of both sides of your employment authorization card (if applicable).
