Installing the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Originally posted: March 2002 Affected software versions BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 2.1 for Microsoft Exchange with Service Pack 1 Summary This document explains how to install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console (Microsoft Management Console [MMC] Snap-in) for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and point to a remote SQL server. This document assumes the same system requirements as the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation. Explanation After the BlackBerry Enterprise Management console is installed, a directory is created that is named Database. This directory contains five files: Createdb.exe is used to call the Createdb.sql with the correct parameters. Createdb.sql is used to create the initial BESMgmt database. Errors.sql is used to add errors to the master sysmessages table. Stored proc.sql is used to create all the stored procedures in the admin database. Tables.sql is used to create the initial BlackBerry Admin Server tables. When these files are run on the production SQL server, they create the database that is required for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console can then be pointed to the database using an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) connection that is created on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Installing the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console installation The following steps explain how to install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange 2000. 1. When the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console installation starts, it checks whether the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) is installed locally. This installation is not required and you can click No when the following dialog box appears. Figure 1: Local installation dialog box 2001 Research In Motion Limited www.blackberry.net Page 1 of 9
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management window appears, with the Welcome screen displayed. Figure 2: BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management Welcome screen 2. Click Next to begin the installation. The License Agreement screen appears. Figure 3: BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management License Agreement screen 3. In the Database Information section, clear the Create BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management database check box. 6. In the Database Authentication section, in the Password field, type the password if the SQL server has a password set for the system administrator (sa) account. 7. In the Database Authentication section, for the Database Authentication Method, select SQL Server Authentication. Creating the database on the remote SQL server Installing the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 1. Copy the files from the database directory on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to a temporary directory on the SQL server. By default, the files are located in C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management\Database. Figure 6: BlackBerry Management Console database directory on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 2. Open a command prompt on the SQL server computer and change the directory to the temporary directory that stores the database files. Figure 7: Command prompt with the temporary directory for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console 3. Run the Createdb.exe from the temporary directory. The following information should appear. 2001 Research In Motion Limited www.blackberry.net Page 4 of 9

In the following fields, type the appropriate information: Name: Leave this value as BesMgmt, because it was specified in the installation of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console. Description: Information is not required in this field, but can contain a description of the DSN. Server: This field must specify the SQL server on which you have created the database. 5. Click Next. The second screen of the Create a New Data Source to <driver> window appears. Figure 14: Create a New Data Source to <driver> window Screen 2 6. Select the Change the default database to check box and, in the text box, specify the BesMgmt database on the SQL server. 7. Click Next. A screen appears on which the connection options and settings are confirmed. 8. Click Test Source Data.
