RN Refresher Course ~A course for registered nurses who wish to update their skills and enter the acute care, med-surg setting~ September 1 November 22, 2011 *orientation is September 1, classes begin September 15* The Course: A 12 week course of theory and clinical instruction designed to refresh nursing knowledge and skills for working in the acute care setting. Areas of study include nursing process, health assessment, clinical skills, and clinical decision making. Sponsored by: Who Should Enroll: Registered nurses who have been away from acute care for no more than10 years. Registered nurses or new grads who want to update their nursing skills to enter or re-enter the acute care setting. Limited number of students accepted! When: The course runs from September 1 through November 22, 2011. Orientation with the College of Mount St. Joseph will be Thursday, September 1, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Online learning, which includes in-person meetings at the Mount every Thursday from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm, will begin September 15 and continue for six weeks. Clinical orientation at the hospital sites will be Monday & Tuesday, September 26 & 27, with clinical days starting Monday & Tuesday, October 3 & 4, and continuing for eight weeks with the last clinical day taking place on Tuesday, November 22. Clinical days: Mondays and Tuesdays 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. * Class meeting days: Thursdays 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm *clinical times may vary slightly on occasion but all changes will be communicated Where: Skills training class will meet weekly at the College of Mount St. Joseph, 5701 Delhi Road, Cincinnati, OH 45223 *A complete schedule with classroom dates, locations and parking details will be given prior to the start of the course. Clinical requirements will be fulfilled at the sponsoring hospital of the participant's choice (note: active state RN licensure required). INFORMATION SHEET RN REFRESHER COURSE September 1, 2011 - November 22, 2011 *orientation is September 1, classes begin September 15* Purpose: To provide an organized learning experience: designed, planned and evaluated to meet behavioral objectives. To update knowledge of current nursing theory and clinical practice and provide current information and instruction to the RN who wishes to re-enter nursing practice or refresh nursing knowledge or skills. Course Objectives: Develop and apply current knowledge in the areas of nursing process, health assessment, clinical skills and clinical decision making required for nursing practice Achieve experience in providing clinical care to patients with selected nursing needs. Implement the Nursing Process in the coordination of adult medical-surgical patient care. Communicate effectively with individuals, families and other members of the healthcare team. Employ critical thinking to make competent decisions. Exercise professional legal, ethical, social and political responsibilities. Gain a renewed sense of self-confidence as a professional nurse. IMPORTANT *Completion of the Refresher Course does not ensure employment. *College credit will not be obtained from completing this course. Target Population: RNs who have been inactive for 10 years or less in the practice of nursing. RNs who want to update nursing skills to enter or re-enter the acute care medicalsurgical setting. Course Participant Requirements: Proof of active Ohio RN licensure if clinical site is TriHealth. Proof of active Kentucky RN licensure if clinical site is St. Elizabeth Healthcare. Participants must be able to commit to the classroom and clinical time requirements described in the course syllabus. Health insurance Professional liability insurance* (required by October 1, 2011) *not required for TriHealth ment of recent physical examination, within 6 months of start of program. (Physical Exam must include ability to meet physical requirements of clinical component) Proof of MMR, Hepatitis B Flu shot and results of a 2-step TB test within the last 12 months Proof of current CPR status (BLS) (required by October 1) (contact Red Cross, local Fire Dept., NKEMS, or refer to www.tristatenrc.org under Nursing Resources for TriHealth CPR class information) Background Check from county & state of residence Computer access required Textbook purchase recommended Cost: $1800.00 ($900.00 due with application, $900.00 due October 1, 2011.) *$900.00 down payment held with application until class has been determined; promptly refunded to those not selected into the class. Time Frame: The RN Refresher is a 12 week course (beginning with orientation on September 1) with 6 weeks of online learning including in-person skills training one evening per week and starting on October 3 & 4, clinical experiences two days per week for 8 weeks. The classroom meeting days are Thursdays from 6:00 pm 9:30 pm at the College of Mount St. Joseph. Clinical days are Monday and Tuesday, 7:00 am 3:30 pm at the hospital sites.* *clinical times may vary slightly on occasion but all changes will be communicated Successful Course Completion Requirements: Theory Complete the 6 week lab component (100% attendance)* Attend and actively participate in all lab sessions Pass the math calculation exam Complete all required on-line modules at a satisfactory level Maintain 70% average on course weekly quizzes online *missed lab hours are required to be made up with a private instructor available at $30/hr. Clinical Must be passing the class successfully to enter clinical Evaluation and recommendation by clinical instructor Develop and apply current knowledge in the areas of nursing process, health assessment, clinical skills and clinical decision making required for nursing practice Completion of 94% of clinical hours -- complete 120 clinical hours at a satisfactory level These requirements will be mutually evaluated on an ongoing basis with appropriate interventions as needed. Inability to complete these requirements results in failure of the course. Theory Content: Patient care principles and systems review: systems and disease review, physical assessment, current therapy, documentation of the nursing process. Clinical topics: Infection control, fluid electrolyte balance, palliative care and pain management, skin/wound care, chemical dependency. Skill Lab experience: Medical-Surgical skill competencies to include: General physical assessment and practices related to patient safety and infection control. Professional issues: changing healthcare industry, legal and managed care, quality assurance and case management. In-class meetings: 21 hours (3 ½ hours per week) of skills lab On-line theory: approximately 20 hours per week of additional on-line preparation Clinical - 128 hours: Clinical rotation: students will be assigned to a clinical instructor at the sponsoring facility under the supervision of the assigned coordinator. Each student is required to complete 94% of the scheduled hours. Application of theory will take place in one designated hospital (no rotation). Each student is expected to meet clinical requirements (e.g. required facility testing, satisfactory progress summary). The 12 week course is designed to facilitate the re-entry or refresh the knowledge of the Registered Nurse who has been inactive for 10 years or less in the practice of nursing. Ohio clinical sites require an active Ohio license. Kentucky clinical site requires an active Kentucky license. This course is a combination of theory and clinical components. The clinical component is physically demanding. ACCEPTANCE: Acceptance into the RN Refresher Course is contingent upon a successful interview with participating hospital representatives. To be scheduled for the interview the applicant must have submitted a complete application by deadline date. Final selection into program is at discretion of the participating hospital site.
