AIMS: To provide a supportive environment in which graduate nurses begin nursing practice in mental health. To encourage the development of critical thinking and reflective practice through the process of clinical supervision To assist Graduate Nurses to work towards achieving the National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce as a beginning level practitioner ACADEMIC COMPONENT To facilitate the process of graduate nurses commencing tertiary studies in Mental Health, thereby preparing them for advancement in the mental health field. This requires successful applicants to enrol with an affiliated university in postgraduate mental health studies and undertake the NEVIL program (equates to 3 subject credits). The NEVIL program consists of 3 study blocks (each of 1 week s duration) over the year. Content is delivered by the clinical educators of the NEVIL cluster (a consortium consisting of several major rural and metropolitan mental health services within Victoria) Attendance and successful completion of the NEVIL program is mandatory. Postgraduates receive full pay whilst attending the NEVIL program. 12 months There are 2-3 rotations, consisting of Acute Inpatient Kerferd (mandatory), Community Mental Health, and the offer of an elective. Rotations are available, by negotiation. The graduate will be required to enrol in a Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing at an affiliated university and to be working towards the completion of these studies. 2 Late January each year Require evidence of : Registration with the AHPRA Not having worked more than 1200 hours in the preceding 12 months as a Registered Nurse to qualify for entry to a Graduate Nurse program All positions are paid at 64 hours per fortnight to enable the Post graduate to have sufficient time to study per week. Support includes: more supernumerary time than any other graduate program, a clinical educator dedicated to the graduate program, group and individual Clinical Supervision, two preceptors per graduate who have been educated to meet the demands of this role, and a structured graduate year program. This program and its curriculum have been externally evaluated by the Academic Programs Committee of the University of Melbourne, La Trobe University and RMIT University. Successful completion of the Alfred Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program will provide up to four subjects (dependant on university chosen) advanced standing towards a Masters or Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing. The aim of the program is to provide a supportive environment which will include rotations in Adult Acute Inpatient, Aged Acute Inpatient and Community Care Units (Recovery) and an elective rotation. Ongoing support is provided through a 2 week orientation program, clinical supervision, preceptorship, monthly study days, clinical educators and the peer support program.
