He later created and managed several software companies, which he drove to fast growth and high profitability. 10:00 FRANK SUYKENS Chief Technology Officer, Luciad CTO Keynote Accelerating Insight through Visual Analytics Sensors surge and big data grows. Two billion smart phones and many more GPS sensors are active today. What if we equip all cars, ships and aircraft with environmental sensors? How can we gain knowledge from all that data? How can we find the needle in this big digital haystack? In real-time? Visual analytics, the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces, can be a key enabler to tackle this challenge. In this keynote Luciad shares its vision that with the right data architecture, analysis tools and visualization capabilities, any user can be turned into a powerful analyst who can make sense out of today s mass amounts of geo-enabled and temporal data. Frank Suykens is the Chief Technology Officer at Luciad. He has been leading the development, roadmap and strategy of Luciad Products for over 10 years and is responsible for all research at Luciad. Prior to joining Luciad in 2003, Frank was R&D Engineer at Barco and held positions of Researcher and Postdoctoral associate at the Computer Graphics Research group at the University of Leuven. Frank obtained a M.Sc. in Engineering at the University of Leuven in Belgium in 1995, and a Ph.D. in Engineering at the same university in 2002. 10:30 MAJOR GENERAL CHRIS BADIA Commander, European Air Transport Command (EATC) EATC: A Blueprint for Multinational Cooperation Projects? In a broader sense the presentation will focus on the business model EATC is based on, expand on capabilities and performances as well as on the fields of operation. Furthermore the benefits of being a member in such a multinational organization will be discussed. With the introduction of the A400M transport airplane into service, user nations are facing new challenges in the field of a common operated aircraft. This challenges in respect to data networks and systems within the A400M will also be discussed. Major General Chris Badia actively served the German Air Force for many years, both in Germany and abroad. As of 2003, the focal point of his career was in the politico-military arena with various staff positions with the German Ministry of Defence in Berlin, amongst which a few years working directly under the Deputy Minister of Defence in Berlin, first as a staff officer then as his personal staff officer. Just before taking on the responsibility as Commander of the European Air Transport Command in the Netherlands in 2014, Major General Badia was closely engaged in the future planning of the German Armed Forces, the foundations of the German Armed Forces such as we know it today. _ SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT About Lockheed Martin Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs approximately 112,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. SEPTEMBER 30 SPEAKERS PLENARY HALL 400 11:30 M. YAVUZ OKUR Technical Lead, DAS Implementation Office, NATO Communications and Information Agency Componentisation of C4ISR Systems The session outlines the NCI Agency/DAS approach for componentisation of C4ISR systems and re-use concept within the Bi-SC AIS projects. Componentisation is one of the implementation strategies to define the method, processes and tools to support the Systems Engineering of complex software systems into smaller, reusable parts. Geospatial visualisation is an important functionality for each C4ISR system and its conceptual architecture will be briefly mentioned in the briefing. M. Yavuz Okur is a Principal Scientist at the NATO Communications and Information Agency. DR. CAROLINE LOWE Principal Engineer, Network Rail Transforming Asset Management through Geographical Information Systems (GIS) GB railway is the oldest in the world with the national network forming in the 1840s. Asset management is a real challenge; some of the infrastructure dates back to Victorian times. Over the last 20 years passenger numbers have doubled and we are now at a record high. In response to this challenge NR is transforming the way we do business. Our workforce is changing from a traditional heavy engineering company to a modern enterprise with a desire to exploit technology. Vast sets of data collected over many decades are now being exploited through data mining and statistical analysis. But one of the key changes is the utilisation of Geographical Information Systems both for display and analysis. This presentation will outline 2 recently developed GIS systems: The first provides tactical information for those maintaining Over-Head-Line equipment across the network. The second is used to help define strategic investment decisions to improve the weather resilience of the network. 12:00 Dr Caroline Lowe is a principle engineer within the Safety Technical & Engineering Directorate at Network Rail HQ in Milton Keynes, UK. Following a mathematics degree at Manchester University she worked for almost 10 years as an academic at the College of Aeronautics (Cranfield) and the Department of Applied Mathematics & Theoretical Physics (Cambridge). ZALIDIS Scientific Coordinator, i-bec Studios 314+316 Precision Farming and Agriculture: ibec Luciad Soil variability defines the diversified ability of soil to provide the plants with the water and nutrients they need. Zones with different soil characteristics can be defined with the use of Earth Observation data. The response of the plants to cultivation management is expected to follow the pattern of this soil zoning. This can be verified by measuring selected plant indexes as is the thermal stress of the leaves as a result of the irrigation management. In this context, the image editing and visualisation performance of Luciad Lightspeed were leveraged for assessing cultivation management. The application developed aims at the dynamic visualisation of the status of the cultivated crop as well as the outcome of the zoning management. Professor George Zalidis is a Council Member, Professor in the Laboratory of Applied Soil Science and Director of the Laboratory of Remote Sensing and G.I.S., at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki at the Faculty of Agriculture. Professor Zalidis also acts as Scientific Coordinator for the Interbalkan Environment Center (i-bec). i-bec, a member of the Group on Earth Observation (GEO), engages in the integrated management and protection of both transboundary watersheds and natural resources by developing and managing integrated environmental data information systems to support development initiatives, entrepreneurship and competitiveness in multiple sectors of the regional economy and society. These applications are designed to serve the needs of territorially focused policy makers, businesses and the public at regional, national and international levels. _ SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT For two decades, NVIDIA has pioneered visual computing: the art and science of computer graphics. FRÉDÉRIC HOUBIE Senior Product Manager, Luciad Studios 314+316 Geospatial Standards: What You Need to Know to be Successful The use of geospatial information is increasing rapidly. There is a growing recognition in both government and the private sector that geography is a vital component of effective decision making. In order to effectively leverage the value of geospatial information, the information must be easy to access and use. Given that geospatial information comes from many different sources, and is managed by a very large number of different providers from mapping agencies to commercial data providers to volunteered geographic information - there is an overwhelming requirement to easily discover and share this information. Standards have a key role in this respect and are essential to delivering authoritative geospatial services and products which meet the requirements of the wider community of users. Involved in standardization for 10 years, Frédéric Houbie has contributed for Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) in multiple standards defining Geospatial Web Services, Data and Metadata models. He has participated to ISO TC 211 normalization and has joined multiple working groups of experts for the INSPIRE regulation.
