ISM540: Introduction to Business Intelligence Credit Hours: 3 Contact Hours: This is a 3-credit course, offered in accelerated format. This means that 16 weeks of material is covered in 8 weeks. The exact number of hours per week that you can expect to spend on each course will vary based upon the weekly coursework, as well as your study style and preferences. You should plan to spend 10-25 hours per week in each course reading material, interacting on the discussion boards, writing papers, completing projects, and doing research. Course Description and Outcomes This course provides students with an overview of Business Intelligence (BI) for an enterprise, establishing the foundation for using data in cross-functional key areas, such as accounting, sales, production, customer data, and other elements, to assist with generating actionable intelligence data for decision making in order to achieve or maintain competitive advantage in the workplace and evaluate how well corporate key performance indicators are being met. The course covers all of the details involved in planning for, constructing, and evaluating a BI system, the heart of which is a data warehouse database. It also covers in detail the importance of gathering user requirements, evaluating sources of transaction data, data cleansing, refreshing the data warehouse, and various modes of delivery of the outputs. Finally, the course investigates the differing needs and expectations of the wide spectrum of BI system users throughout the enterprise. Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Gain an overview of business intelligence ence and uses of BI in organizations to meet strategic objectives. 2. Analyze business data and recommend techniques to transform data into a form used by organizations to gain business advantage. 3. Demonstrate the ability to provide data analysis and find applicable business intelligence solutions. Participation & Attendance Prompt and consistent attendance in your online courses is essential for your success at CSU-Global Campus. Review the requirements of the portfolio in Module 8. The outline should reflect the topic you chose in Module 3 and cover all the required elements of the assignment. Submit your outline in the assignment dropbox. Include with your outline a draft of your proposed sources, listed in correct APA format. No points are assigned for this deliverable, but points will be deducted from your final grade on the Portfolio Project if you fail to submit this item as required (see the Portfolio Project Rubric for grading details). Additionally, you will be expected to account for the instructor's feedback in the final version of the Portfolio Project assignment. Module 6 Critical Thinking System Architecture (150 You are the CIO of a large organization that has been suffering a declining market share for the last several years. You realize the importance of a business intelligence system and how this can help your organization regain their competitive advantage, but your upper management is reluctant to allocate the funding or resources for what they consider a risky venture and yet another data processing system since there are already so many in your organization. Develop a critical essay proposal paper to your CEO explaining that a business intelligence system is not a waste of time and money and how it might actually turn the business around. Your paper should be 5 to 7 pages, refer to outside academic sources from the CSU-Global Library and course materials, be well written and in conformity with CSU-Global APA and writing expectations. Module 8 Portfolio Project A Business Intelligence System (350 You are an IT project manager at LECAL Cruises, Inc. Your company owns 10 cruise ships but hopes to increase their fleet in the next five years through increased bookings, improved destinations and on-shore excursions, and more on-board amenities. LECAL s ships currently have between 500- and 2,000-passenger capacities. They are looking to build two new ships in the next five years but are unsure of the best size.

Recently there have been some problems with engine room fires and temporary loss of power on cruises, and LECAL is concerned about the harm these incidents may have done to their reputation in the industry. They suspect that postings on Facebook and Twitter, as well as online blogs, may provide evidence of what past cruise passengers are saying to others about their positive and negative experiences. Your company has five legacy systems that have a 10-year history of: 1) past bookings from passengers 2) past on-shore excursions 3) records of on-board entertainment and sales 4) records of LECAL employees serving as both on-board staff from captain to dishwasher and support staff at the headquarters office. LECAL attempted to create a data warehouse a few years ago, but the project failed miserably. Your upper management now wants to create a business intelligence system that would best serve their needs. They are unsure if a data warehouse would be best, a business analytics system for big data would be better, or perhaps a combination of both. They have no clue as to what the required inputs to a business intelligence system may be or what the best outputs would be to achieve their goal of a 50% increase in revenue in the next five years. They have tasked you to create a detailed proposal for a comprehensive business intelligence system to meet their strategic goal. The initial phase of the project must start producing actionable intelligence in six months, and then most of the system is to be in place in the next year. It is anticipated that the system will constantly evolve over time to process additional inputs and produce different types of outputs. For your portfolio assignment, submit a proposal for a business intelligence system for LECAL. Determine the best strategy for input data, processing types, and output reporting. You will submit an outline of your proposal in Week 5, together with a list of proposed sources. You should account for your instructor s feedback in Week 5 in your final project. Your proposal should reference at least five credible sources from the CSU-Global Library, be 15 to 20 pages, well written, and in conformity with CSU-Global APA and writing expectations.
