How did the idea of a Ordinance Survey Map WMS rose up...? Joint project of Hochschule für Nachhaltige Entwicklung Eberswalde and KLEKS (KulturLandschaftsElementeKataster), found by Dr. Mike Stöckmann, HS Neubrandenburg KLEKS runs a Web Map Service to serve as a interactive platform for users to gather and contribute landscape-cultural related information (with a focus on north eastern Germany) Everybody can input pictures and information about landscape-cultural elements e. g. remains of historical settlements, relicts of formerly common landuse systems, historical landmarks, historically important trees (Peace Oak), historical warfare infrastructure, etc...
How did the idea of a Web Map Service rose up...? Idea was to participate with KLEKS and take over the work on the historical maps of Brandenburg and serve it to the KLEKS Server as a web map service Historical maps in this context were Messtischblätter and Urmesstischblätter, hand drawn maps from the late 19th and the early 20th century www.kleks-online.de
Zoom into a KLEKS map area near Greifswald intractive symbols, after click opens photos, descriptions, local anecdotes related to this lanscape element, etc... several user inputs made over time www.kleks-online.de
What is a Web Map Service...? Term has many meanings: Inofficial, but in everydays use, an Application a user is using to access maps over the Internet is called Map Service (e.g. Google Maps ) Official, it's a Service, a host computer is serving an da client computer is accessing to get map images and information from and display it to the user in front of the screen (WMS protocol = standard protocol to share map images over the Internet, defined by the Open Geospatial Consortium, OGC)
ArcGIS Server...sharing your GIS work with others! ArcGIS Manager Tools of GIS publishing are ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) to author GIS document ArcCatalog or ArcGISManager make a service out of it ArcGIS Server to serve map document, geodatabase,... Web Server (e.g. Apache...) to host it to the Internet Client devices to access the service and work with data Arc Catalog Web Server GIS Server Data ArcMap ESRI ArcGIS Server 9.3 Webhelp
Actual ArcGIS Server projects of the HNE Eberswalde... Biotope Mapping Area Map Biesenthaler Becken Landscape Ecological Report LANU 3. Semester both pictures: HNE Eberswalde
What was done during project work...? Getting the paper maps fortunately all needed maps were already in stock of HNE Eberswalde both pictures: Landesvermessung und Geobasisinformation Brandenburg (LGB) Messtischblatt (Ordinance Survey Maps from approx. 1876-1920) Urmesstischblatt (Ordinance Survey Maps from approx. 1767-1787)
What was done during project work...? Scanning of paper maps with flatbed scanner, getting TIFF images with approximately 52 MB each Georeferencing TIFFs in ArcMap with ArcMap Georeferencing - tool, using Gauß Krüger Coordinate System Zone 4 as a reference system Clipping to related Coordinate System Grid Cell to cut out map legend using ArcMap Clip - tool Map images fitted into Gauß Krüger Coordinate System Zone 4 grid, HNE Eberswalde
What was done during project work...? Publishing ArcMap document with ArcGIS Server Manager Several options to choose WMS (Web Map Service) capability to enable OpenSource access KML (Keyhole Markup Language) capability for use with GoogleEarth Geodata Access to embed geodatabases behind map ArcGIS Server Manager HNE Eberswalde
What was done during project work...? As a addition to publishing in ArcGIS Server a OpenSource solution was worked out Open Geospatial Consortium GeoServer was used Why GeoServer: Java - based well build User Interface sophisticated piece of software good manual / community easy to input images easy to build image mosaics no PHP programming needed www.geoserver.org
What is accomplished by March 2010...? Small patch of Messtischblättern around Eberswalde converted in a map mosaic Ready to use under WMS protocol both pictures: HNE Eberswalde To be continued...
What will maybe be in future...? By now HNE Eberswalde Web Map Service is still in its infancy Maybe future projects could be: HNE Eberswalde Web Map Service with all past and actual projects of the HNE Public Relation tool for communication with landowners and authorities
