MEDITERRANEAN SUMMER UNIVERSITY in partnership with Antalya International University and international Relation Department of Akdeniz University «CHANGING SECURITY PERCEPTIONS IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND THE MEDITERRANEAN» REPORT OF THE SESSION ANTALYA () June 22th to 28th, 2014
- 1 - The «Centre International de Formation Européenne» has organised its first Mediterranean summer university in from June 22 th to 28 th, 2014. This one week summer school took place in the very nice city of Antalya in collaboration with two different university partners, a public one, the department of international relations of Akdeniz University, and a private one, the Antalya International University. The foreign students and lecturers were accommodated on the campus of Akdeniz University, close to the beach and with easy access to the commun transportation in order to reach the city center. Half of the lectures were in the building of Akdeniz University, the same place as the accommodation. For the other lectures, in the very new building of Antalya International University, a little bit far from Antalya, each day a shuttle took the group on the campus and brought them back after the courses. The timing was organised so that everybody had good opportunities to visit Antalya and its attractions during the evening. The academic program was structured around a lot of topics regarding the Mediterranean area : Geographic and Economic aspects, cooperation with the other countries in the region, conflicts in the region, Energy resources, transportation and exchanges, etc. The programme contained approximately 30 hours of lectures, discussions and role plays to permit to the students to be more and more involved. They were conducted in English by international experts from European Union and from. This large group, more than 25 participants representing 6 different countries, has immediately formed very friendly relations. Thanks to their turkish new friends, a special bond was immediately created and probably will be an opportunity for each one to visit each other in their own country for many years to come. All our participants enjoyed a rich extra programme which helped them to savour the culture of this special country. A day trip was proposed in very historical and cultural sites, Phaselis and Olympos ancient cities, including free time for swimming and a very appreciated lunch in a typical Turkish restaurant. All the candidates completed the program successfully and received a certificate of participation. Additionally, those students who presented some supplementary work after the session acquired ECTS Credits. We also asked our students at the end of the session to fill out the evaluation questionnaire and comment upon our programme. Their observations, which can be found further on in this report have been of immense value for us, organisers. Cife warmly thanks the two partners from Antalya International University and Adkeniz University for their friendly and efficient collaboration and for accepting this first experience together.

- 12 - EVALUATION The evaluation organised at the end of the session and the examination of the forms proved a very good satisfaction of the students regarding the programme as well as the organisation. We can consider that the program has been widely praised with a level of satisfaction of 85%. This level could have been much higher if the housing conditions of the candidates had been better. Indeed, if the candidates have all noticed a very large satisfaction regarding : - relations with the staff, - administrative assistance offered before and during the program - cultural and tourist activities offered outside the program - conduction of the educational program, etc. it appeared that the on-campus housing was a little bit poor. The air conditioning did not work, the bathrooms were very old, the doors of the bedrooms or the wardrobe didn t lock However, no candidate had really complained about housing because the rest of supplying and program was perfect, but, nevertheless, many have noticed a housing of "poor" quality. The Turkish partners have taken note and excused by saying that initially the students should have been housed in a new academic structure, on the same campus but in a new building being finalized. Unfortunately, this building, which was to be completed in June, has been delayed and candidates had to be housed in the old building. If the program is renewed in 2015, the University is committed to accommodate all the candidates in the new building and the students in this case should be fully satisfied. The choice of topics was appreciated and judged interesting and useful. The students made many positive comments on our team of lecturers, from and from abroad, which additionally gave them insight into different subjects. The only (and very rare) complaint was about a few ones whose English language was a little bit insufficient and, therefore, gave a lecture considered as too long and too slow or about the duration of lectures (too long for some of the students) specially for those without experience of such an intensive programme. Despite this, the content of each lecture was considered as really interesting and all the teachers and all the lectures were highly rated. The local teachers, as well as external teachers invited by the CIFE were widely appreciated (almost all teachers and experts received a score of 8 to 10). This experience of academic programme and living together with a large representation of nationalities will benefit each on in the future and probably will give the opportunity to create deeper links between the participants. The foreign students have really appreciated relationship with their new Turkish friends and with the director of the programme. The general opinion was a perfect mixture of leisure activities and lectures. Everybody has agreed that free time during the evening, with the help of the Turkish assistants and students was wonderful specially because of our very nice location, close to the beach. In conclusion, all candidates have been very satisfied with the program and expressed the wish to follow another summer session of CIFE in the future. We can confirm that the program has achieved great success for both students and teachers and, we hope that the partners have been fully satisfied and ready to start again. CIFE warmly thanks all the managers and assistants of Akdeniz University and Antalya International University for their involvement, their confidence and their friendship.
