In times of civil war and displacement in their home country, this programme intends to give a sustainable contribution to build a future elite of leaders who will play a central role in rebuilding the country. LfS offers scholarship for Master s and PhD studies in Germany to qualified applicants from all fields of study except medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, law, the arts and architecture. All LfS scholarship holders profit from a side study programme in good governance, civil society and sustainable project management. The mandatory blended-learning programme with several attendance phases each year has to be completed in addition to the degree studies. Who can apply? The programme targets highly qualified Syrian academics who posess the necessary qualifications for master s or PhD studies in Germany and intend to actively contribute to the reconstruction of Syria after the end of the civil war. Applicants must fulfil the following conditions: Syrian citizenship or permanent residence in Syria BEFORE 2011 Residence at the time of application A) In Syria B) In Germany (immigration for permanent residence after 2011 or after 2009 for previous studies in Germany) C) In third countries (refugees registered with UNHCR) What can be funded? The scholarship includes a language course (2-6 months) in Germany before the start of academic studies a scholarship to complete an M.A., M.Sc. or PhD degree a mandatory side study programme in good governance, civil society and sustainable
project management which has to be completed in addition to the degree studies. The mandatory blended-learning programme with several attendance phases each year has to be completed in addition to the degree studies. Duration of the funding Selected candidate generally start their German language course in April 2015 and take up their M.A., M.Sc. or PhD studies at a German institution of higher education on 1 October 2015. The duration of funding is equivalent to the regular period of study in the selected study programme and DAAD guidelines. It is generally two years for Master s students and three and a half years for PhD students. Value Language course (2-6 months) in Germany before the start of the degree studies Costs of the obligatory side study Programme Monthly scholarship rate payments of 750 EURO (Master s students) or 1000 EUROS (PhD students). An adequate health, accident and private/personal liability insurance in Germany. Travel allowance A yearly study and research subsidy If applicable, a family allowance and rent subsidy A subsidy for print costs (for PhD theses) Selection In December, a pre-selection will take place on the basis of the submitted application documents. Preselected candidate will be invited to an interview in Istanbul, Amman, Beirut or Bonn in February. Please note: Preselected candidates must present originals of all previously submitted documents at the interview. In addition to previous achievements in school and university, language skills and the general motivation, the main selection criterion is a convincing description of the planned studies in Germany and a convincing answer to the questions how the further academic qualification of the candidate will contribute to the reconstruction of Syria. Please be aware that the candidate s presence for a personal interview at one of the places named above is a condition for the award of a scholarship. The travel to the place of the interview is at your own risk. Travel costs have to be covered by the applicant. What requirements must be met? Successful completion of a Bachelor s (in case of application for a Master s studies
scholarship) or Master s (in case of application for a PhD studies scholarship) degree at a renowned university. Good English or German language skills Not more than 6 years should have passed since the completion of the last academic degree. Language skills The necessary language skills for the desired field of study have to be proven at the latest at the start of degree studies. Suitable proof of necessary language skills or the ability to acquire them in the course of the six months language course has to be submitted with the application documents. Generally, the possession of necessary language skills will be assumed if proof of knowledge of German level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and/or English corresponding to IELTS band 6 or TOEFL (550 paper based, 213 computer based, 80 internet based) is submitted. The application procedure occurs online through the DAAD portal. Please note that the "Application portal" tab in the scholarship database only appears while the current application period is running. After the application deadline has expired, the portal for this program is not available until the next application period. Information for applicants, who are not currently living in Germany: If you cannot submit your application online due to network problems, we do accept your application in hard copy (2 copies). This exemption will only be made for applicants who do not reside in Germany. Application documents Application form A complete Curriculum Vitae (max. 3 pages) containing information about the applicants academic career to date and current or previous employers Motivation Letter (1-3 pages) containing a precise description of the applicant s academic / professional and personal reasons for wishing to participate in the LfS-programme and, in the case of a master's project, for the choice of degree programme For a master s scholarship: Internet print-out with information on the desired study programme (max. 4 pages) For a PhD scholarship: Letter of a German professor agreeing to supervise the dissertation Project (Proposal) Transcripts of records for previous studies listing results of all courses taken at a university with grades and grading scheme
Additional documents that might be relevant for your application (e.g. proof of internships, proof of employment) Proof of necessary language skills (generally DSH, TestDaF, TOEFL, IELTS) A copy of the school diploma that grants access to a higher education course of study in the home country (listing all subject grades) Up to two letters of recommendation from professors, teachers, employers or any other suitable person who can give an account of the applicant s qualification for the Programme Copies of the applicant s passport and all passport pages and other documents containing information about the applicant and his or her current residence status (visa, residence permit, UNHCR registration). If your application is successful, you will be required to submit a certificate proving that you are in good health.
