DISTANCE LEARNING COURSES AT BRONX COMMUNITY COLLEGE What are Distance Learning Courses? In Distance Learning Courses, part or all instruction is conducted online, using the Blackboard Course Management System. There are two types of Distance Learning Asynchronous Courses: One-third to three-quarters of coursework is conducted online and the rest is in a classroom or lab. Asynchronous Courses: 75% or more of the traditional coursework is conducted online. The exact amount of in-class and online time varies. See the list of courses below and contact the individual instructors to learn more about specific classes. Should I take a Distance Learning Course? To succeed in Distance Learning courses, students must be self-disciplined and good at managing their time and following directions. These characteristics are much more important than skill with computers. To check your suitability for online learning, take this self-test: http://www.bcc.cuny.edu/onlinelearning/?page=are_online_courses_for_you What is required to take a Distance Learning Course? It is strongly recommended that students have access to the Internet at home. It will be very difficult to take a Distance Learning course without online access at home. Basic Knowledge of a word processor (Microsoft Word is strongly recommended) and a web browser (Internet Explorer and Mozilla Foxfire are the most used browsers). 2.0 GPA or Higher. A CUNY Portal Account and an active BCC Email account. All students have a BCC email account. o To use or activate your email account, go to: www.bcc.cuny.edu/email. o To use or create a CUNY Portal account, go to: portal.cuny.edu, then click on Log-in. o If you experience difficulty with either mail or portal accounts contact the Help Desk at 718-289-5970 or helpdesk@bcc.cuny.edu.
