PRODUCT SHEET CA Datacom Server CA Datacom Server Version 14.0 CA Datacom Server provides web applications and other distributed applications with open access to CA Datacom /DB Version 14.0 data by providing standard database connectivity that enables Web services, service oriented architecture (SOA) tools and other distributed programs to utilize CA Datacom/DB as the database repository. This integration tool ensures transparent access to your CA Datacom/DB data for your business critical applications that run on a wide variety of platforms. Overview Most organizations have invested years building and refining critical System z enterprise data stores for daily operational excellence and strategic decisions. Alongside the core applications that support key business transactions, organizations are building web-based applications using modern tools and skills to deliver the data for use inside and outside the organization. The challenge is providing these new capabilities without disrupting the existing application assets. Rewriting core applications has proven to be cost prohibitive and full of risks. Business value Opening CA Datacom/DB data to web applications is a job that CA Datacom Server has been doing for many years. To deliver CA Datacom/DB data across the web, CA Technologies sites around the world use CA Datacom Server in conjunction with web tools and popular application servers such as IBM WebSphere, Oracle WebLogic and Apache Tomcat.

Features Mainframe 2.0 CA Datacom Server has adopted key Mainframe 2.0 features that are designed to simplify your use and administration of CA Datacom Server and enable your staff to maintain it more effectively and quickly. CA Mainframe Software Manager : CA Mainframe Software Manager (CA MSM) is designed to automate CA Datacom Server acquisition, installation, deployment, configuration and maintenance and remove SMP/E complexities. CA MSM helps save time and resources when compared with the manual steps used to perform these tasks. The Software Acquisition Service is designed to help you to more easily move product installation packages and maintenance from CA Support Online directly to your mainframe environment and prepare them for installation. The Software Installation Service standardizes CA Datacom Server installation, which includes a new, streamlined Electronic Software Delivery (ESD) method that allows CA Datacom Server to be installed using standard utilities. This service also provides standardized SMP/E product installation and maintenance via APARs and PTFs, and simplifies SMP/E processing through an intuitive graphical user interface and an intelligent Installation Wizard. The Software Deployment Service enables you to more easily deploy CA Datacom Server in your mainframe environment. The Software Configuration Service enables you to more effectively configure CA Datacom Server if it has been acquired, installed, maintained and deployed using CA MSM. What s new in CA Datacom Server Version 14.0 Console support: This feature enables the user to submit console commands that duplicate the functionality of SVCOMPR thru the console. The commands as well as the results of the commands are displayed on the operator console. JDBC enhancements: JDBC type 4 connection: JDBC can now use a type 4 connection for direct communications to CA Datacom on the mainframe using TCP/IP. This removes the need for CAICCI and provides additional portability. A type 4 connection allows a connection through any system that that supports java and JDBC. 2

JDBC as a Windows service: The JDBC driver can now run as a Windows service for improved usability. 64 Bit Addressing: ODBC and JDBC can run natively in 64-bit environments, including in a 64-bit JVM on USS. Both ODBC and JDBC on windows can run using either TCP/IP or CCI as a communication protocol in either 64 or 32 bit mode. In USS JDBC may be used to connect using 64 bit with TCP/IP or CCI as a communication method. SQL STATE code: Previously only generic SQL State codes were returned if an error was encountered now SQL State codes are passed directly to both in JDBC and ODBC that from the SQL engine. JDBC 4.0 enhancements: All JDBC 4.0 methods are recognized and where applicable are implemented. CCI dynamic load: version 14 allows deployment of workstation interface code without requiring CCI to be present on the client system. Key features CA Datacom Server supports standard access protocols CA Datacom Server, in conjunction with CA Datacom SQL, enables JDBC and ODBC web applications and other distributed applications to have full access to the CA Datacom/DB database repository. There is no need to move or transform the data in order to open it up for use with web-based tools and applications. Open database access: CA Datacom Server provides open database access with JDBC, ODBC and.net. JDBC: JDBC is an object-oriented database call-level interface for Java specified by Sun Microsystems. Applications written in Java can access CA Datacom/DB data using the JDBC API. A native JDBC driver is delivered with the product. Type 2, 3 and 4 JDBC driver support is provided. The Type 2 driver supports Java application and Java servlet access from any platform that supports Java 1.6 or above. The Type 3 driver supports Java applet access from any Java platform ----- including Windows, UNIX and Linux ----- through communication with a JDBC proxy server component running on Windows, z/os UNIX or through the use of a type 4 driver. A type 4 driver only requires that the Datacom jar file, cadcjdbc.jar, be present on the client system. ODBC: ODBC is a database call-level interface for Windows specified by Microsoft and supported by CA Datacom Server. Applications using the ODBC API can access CA Datacom data. CA Datacom Server adheres to the ODBC 3.5 conformance levels in all Core API functions, all Level 1 API functions and Core SQL grammar. Microsoft ASP can be used in 3

conjunction with the CA Datacom Server ODBC driver and the Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) to create web applications that access CA Datacom/DB data..net: Microsoft.NET applications can access CA Datacom/DB databases using the Microsoft ODBC.NET provider in conjunction with the CA Datacom Server ODBC driver. GUI access to existing CA Datacom/DB data: CA Datacom Server and CA Datacom SQL allow graphical user interface (GUI) client/server query and reporting tools, development tools and user-written applications to access existing CA Datacom/DB mainframe data. There is no need to copy the data, redefine the existing data structures or rewrite existing applications for a database management system limited to only SQL API capabilities. SQL-based connectivity to CA Datacom/DB: CA Datacom Server enables access to CA Datacom/DB through dynamic SQL requests from the client application. Many JDBCenabled or ODBC-enabled products use a point-and-click GUI to produce dynamic SQL statements that drive database access. While educating the users on SQL, these products do not require that users become SQL experts in order to leverage the power of a GUI application with the information in the target CA Datacom/DB databases. Native TCP/IP support: This provides the ability to choose either CCI or TCP/IP as your communication method. This should provide a significant performance improvement in many environments. Security (z/os): When using the CCI access path, the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) can be deployed to ensure secure communications through the JDBC and ODBC drivers. IPv6 (z/os): The latest generation of the internet protocol, IPv6, provides 128-bit address support for expanded addressing and other improved capabilities. CA Datacom Server supports the use of either IPv4 or IPv6 protocols in the type 3 JDBC driver. JDBC 4.0 compliance features: Additional JDBC 4.0 features include new capabilities that you can immediately implement in your CA Datacom Server environments. JDBC data source: This feature provides better portability across multiple platforms and allows you to produce connection objects. Connection pooling for JDBC: Supporting the JDBC 4.0 compliance standards for connection pooling, this capability delivers improved performance at many customer sites. Connection pooling: CA Datacom Server is designed to work with popular application servers in a J2EE environment. The JDBC driver supports container-managed connection pooling to provide optimal performance for high-volume applications running in an application server. 4

Multi-threaded database access: CA Datacom Server delivers multiple thread support in the JDBC and ODBC drivers. This provides high performance for multiple applications that are requesting concurrent access to CA Datacom/DB mainframe data. JNDI interface: The Java Naming Directory Interface (JNDI) is utilized to allow java-enabled applications to easily connect to a CA Datacom/DB database using only a logical data source name Customized data translation options: CA Datacom Server translates character data transferred between the PC and the host. By default, the ODBC driver translates EBCDIC character data on the host to ASCII on the PC using U.S. English code pages. For sites that require native language support in the application, you can override the default language by creating a customized translation table that uses the Country Extended Code Pages for alternate languages. DBCS support: In addition to standard EBCDIC-ASCII character data translation between the workstation and the host, CA Datacom Server also supports double-byte character set (DBCS) processing. Korean IBM to Shifted-JIS and Japanese IBM to Shifted-JIS are currently supported. Multiple back-end operating system support: CA Datacom Server provides access to CA Datacom/DB databases on the z/os and z/vse operating systems. J2EE support: CA Datacom Server is designed to work with popular application servers in a J2EE environment, such as IBM WebSphere, BEA WebLogic and Apache Tomcat. SQL procedure support: SQL procedures can be created, maintained and executed using both the JDBC and ODBC drivers. This allows applications to invoke remote procedures for reuse of existing CA Datacom/DB business logic by using commonly used syntax and interfaces. Standard JDBC and ODBC APIs are provided to allow an application to discover metadata information about procedures. Positioned updates support: The JDBC driver supports positioned update operations for increased application performance. When an application specifies the FOR UPDATE clause on an SQL query statement and sets a cursor name with the JDBC setcursorname method, it can execute SQL INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE statements with the WHERE CURRENT OF cursor-name clause. Delayed parameter binding support: The JDBC driver supports delayed parameter binding, which allows parameters to be set at any time before a statement is executed. This enhancement enables support of the JDBC 3.0 ParameterMetaData feature, improves compatibility with third-party applications and allows statement re-execution without the need to repeat the prepare statement process. 5

Improved performance: Additional performance improvements have been made through the implementation of new code optimizations and other functional areas. Data conversion: The JDBC driver and JDBC server cooperate to perform most data conversions on the client. This can reduce CPU utilization by the JDBC server, which only converts data that it needs to check connection status and passes all other data unchanged Autocommit: This function does not require additional network traffic because it is combined with the statement execution. Optimized code for ODBC: To provide improved response times for SQL Select and Update statements, a reduced number of database calls are made. Read-only server: When you implement a read-only server region, all requests to update the data do not require network traffic to validate server access authorization. The request is denied at the point of origin. Improved ease-of-use: The JDBC driver supports options and tracing on all platforms without requiring the installation of any native libraries. Options can be specified in a standard Java properties file. SQL preprocessor: CA Datacom Server can generate static plans on the mainframe for distributed applications written in C or COBOL to enable high-performance database processing tasks. SQL statements are passed through the CA Datacom Server preprocessor. CA Datacom/DB on the mainframe creates the plan which contains the executable form of the SQL statements, just as it would if you were preprocessing the application on the mainframe. This limits the amount of network traffic necessary to process the request. When the distributed application is executed, the SQL plan on the mainframe is accessed. Supported environments Windows XP, Vista, 7 Windows Server 2003, 2008, 2008 R2 Linux UNIX (HP, Sun, AIX, zseries) UNIX System Services (USS) for z/os V1.9 and above All other platforms that support Java 6

FIGURE A. Open enterprise access + + For JDBC implementations, multiple platform support is provided for access through a proxy server or directly from a client workstation. FIGURE B. TCP/IP access through windows or UNIX System Services + + + + Using the TCP/IP communications option, database requests from applications running on distributed platforms follow a shorter traversal path to access the target CA Datacom/DB data on the mainframe. This is an example of CA Datacom Server managing requests through Windows and z/os Unix System Services platforms. + + 7
