How can you help your child? Focus on accurate reading of questions 66% boys mistakes in tests come from misreading questions Help children develop a sensible pace when working through questions. Encourage children to always have a go.

Supporting mathematics Children will be asked to tackle a wide range of mathematics; It would be very helpful to carry out practical maths eg measuring reading timetables reading scales at home Conversion of units eg grams to kilograms

Kate has a piece of ribbon one metre long. She cuts off 30 centimetres. How many centimetres of ribbon are left? cm 1 mark

Hassan has a jug with some water in it. He adds another 140 millilitres of water. Draw a line to show the new level of water. 300ml 200ml 100ml

Emma parks her car at 9.30 am. She collects the car at 1.20 pm. How much does she pay? Car Park charges Time Charge up to 1 hour 20p 1 to 2 hours 50p 2 to 3 hours 3 to 4 hours 1.00 1.70 over 4 hours 1 mark Dan and Mark both use the car park. Dan says, I paid exactly twice as much as Mark but I only stayed 10 minutes longer. Explain how Dan could be correct. 5.00 1 mark

Supporting maths cont. We will offer for sale study guides in Spring term; We will help the children create a revision timetable for the Easter holidays The more confident children are at mental maths, the easier they will find all the questions; Do help them apply their maths to problems; Always encourage them to have a go. Remind them to show their working when asked Practice times tables at home Reassure them that we can read the questions to them, if they ask.

Overview of the reading test Children will be given 1 hour to read a booklet containing three or four texts and answer a series of comprehension questions: Literal Inferential Evaluative The texts will be in order of difficulty with the least demanding first

Promoting Reading Encourage children to: Encourage them to read as frequently as possible (it is important to build up stamina and speed) To read extensively and discuss personal reading with others Discuss their responses to the books and ask them to explain their comments Ask them to find a phrase which shows. Include fiction and non-fiction Use challenges, eg find 5 words to describe the main character Spring 2017 Discuss their reading comprehension homework with them Encourage them to focus on questions which suit them Encourage them to keep going to the end Keep looking back at the reading booklet

Overview of the Spelling, punctuation and grammar test Asks for knowledge of grammatical terms (such as pronoun and conjunction) Will ask for children to insert words, such as verbs in the correct tense Will ask children to put in the correct punctuation

Advice for tackling the SPAG test We will be teaching the key points about grammar through our teaching of writing Use the printed prompts for your own guidance

Specific pointers Children should cross through any answer they do not wish to be marked

Capital letters should be clear and unambiguous

Capital letters within a sentence will be marked incorrect, unless they are used to start a proper noun or the pronoun I.

Punctuation must be clear and unambiguous It must be visible Its position must be correct and clear

Direct speech can be punctuated with either single or double inverted commas Closing punctuation must be placed inside the final inverted commas, eg I m going to my friend s house for tea.

How will your child be assessed for writing? Children will be assessed through their work in class Children are now expected to match every element of a grade in order to be awarded that standard; There is a strong emphasis on spelling

How can you help your child with writing? Practise the spelling homework with them Support us in our insistence that children spell correctly the words they know Ask the children what is their next step

How can you help in general? Ensure your child attends school regularly and on time Ensure regular bedtimes Ensure homework is completed Use the KS2 study guides for mathematics and English with your child in run up to the tests Reassure your child Encourage them to ask their teachers if they are not sure about anything.

How to help your child to revise We will help your child draw up their own timetable Discuss where to revise When to work Encourage short focused bursts of concentration (about 10 minutes)

During test week Make sure your child goes to bed on time for week before test week, arrives at school in plenty of time, comes to school every day. Plan fun, relaxing activities for end of day.

Encourage your child to Think positively Read questions carefully Have a go at questions and then move onto the next one Stay calm Check their work when they have finished.

Then its time to enjoy
