PURGE JOINT WITH DRY NITROGEN WHILE BRAZING OR SOLDERING GENERAL NOTES: A. This information is given as a general guide only. The Professional Consultant is responsible that pipe, fittings, etc. are suitable for service intended. B. All welding shall conform to workmanship, testing and general requirements of welding section ANSI B31.1 Power Piping. C. Grooved joint piping SPEC. NO. 18 shall not be used on hydronic heating or cooling systems. Exceptions may be allowed only for final connection to equipment that is not available with flanged or threaded connections. D. PVC pipe fitting pressure ratings decrease as pipe diameter increases. Ensure both piping and fittings meet specified pressure ratings, especially when large diameter piping is used. E. Copper Piping: 1. Do not allow T-drill fittings or similar products that extrude a branch from a main line. 2. Do not allow mechanical crimp connections such as Pro-Press except for an emergency tiein to an existing system that has poor isolation. Obtain prior approval with owner. TESTING REQUIREMENTS: A. COPPER PIPING 1. Specifications shall include language that allows the Owner to perform destructive testing of soldered or brazed joints at Owner s discretion and expense. 2. When Owner elects to perform destructive testing, fabricated joints will be tested as follows: a. Test will ensure joints are minimum 80% penetrated around the full circumference of the joint and free of voids. Any joints exhibiting less than 80% penetration of the filler material will be considered to have failed the test. b. Owner shall pay for initial testing of the selected joints. The joint will be sliced and peeled apart (not heated) for inspection purposes. 5 of 6
c. If the joint passes inspection, the Owner will pay for the reconstruction of the joint. d. If any of the joints fail, the contractor is responsible for the repair and subsequent destructive testing. The owner shall select two more joints at random (any size or location) to be tested at the contractor s expense for every failed joint. e. Owner or engineer reserves the right to test any additional joints they deem suspect at owner s expense. Reworking of any failed joints will be at contractor s expense. 3. Specify the following procedure and requirements. a. Piping underground and in chases and walls shall be tested before piping is concealed. b. Test piping before insulation is applied. 1) If insulation is applied before pipe testing and a leak occurs which ruins the insulation, specify damaged insulation is replaced with new insulation by the Contractor at no cost to the Owner. c. Specify a test pressure of 150 psig water pressure. d. Hold test pressure for minimum 4 hours. e. Specify the test is witnessed by the Owner s Representative. f. If more than 3 solder joints leak within the one year warranty, the contractor shall extend the original warranty to a period of 2 years from the date of substantial completion. Warranty shall cover material and labor on all solder joints within original scope of project along with all damages to the building that result from a leak. B. WELDED STEEL PIPING 1. Specifications shall include nondestructive testing of welded joints, a. Include testing of both shop and field fabricated welds b. Test ten percent of all welds making sure to include all welders work. c. Clearly describe Owner pays for initial testing and additional testing in the event of a failure will be paid for by the contractor. d. Clearly indicate what ASME specification to test to. e. Owner or engineer reserves the right to test any additional welds they deem suspect at owner s expense, any rework or retesting will be at contractor s expense. C. SANITARY, STORM, AND ACID WASTE AND VENT PIPING 1. Specify the following procedure and requirements: a. Test piping with water to prove tight. b. Test piping before insulation is applied. c. Hydrostatically test soil, waste, and vent piping inside the building with 15 feet of water and allow to stand for 1 hour for inspection before connecting fixtures. 1) If a leak appears, repair and repeat test. d. Hydrostatically test interior downspouts with 15 feet head of water and allow the water to stand for 1 hour with no leak. e. Water test force mains at a pressure equal to 1.5 times the operating pump discharge pressure. f. Owner s representative shall witness test. 6 of 6
