The technical part of the work are much more advanced and complicated today and at the same time, the number of Healthcare Acquired Infections ( HAI) are increasing in large numbers each day. Infections acquired in health care settings are among the major causes of death and increased morbidity among hospitalized patients. To formally train health care workers in prevention actions are vital. With this project we have sought to increase patient safety through a sustainable and transparent education for staff working with decontamination and sterilization. By developing a shared framework for education this project will enable mobility and employability in this area of expertise. The project has also sought to enforce the laws and regulations on health and safety for those in the field of training and education of personnel Summary: The aim of the project was to enable a cohesive, post high school, Northern European education for Decontamination and CSSD staff (Central Sterile Supply Dept.)The objective was to establish a mutual syllabus and curriculum for a formal VET for Decontamination and CSSD staff. The consortium consisted of participants from the Sterilization Associations, Infection Control Departments and Educational Organizers in seven countries. Political support for the project was gathered from the Northern Dimension Partnership for Public health and Social wellbeing (NDPHS) and the European Commission of Health & Consumers Directorate. The tangible results of the project also contains the possibility of diffusion to colleagues in other countries, European and globally and by this, work towards an even wider understanding and solution of the situation Apart from the vital work with decontamination and sterilization of medical equipment, a VET qualification in this field also increases the status and will have influence upon the composition of the staff towards a more equalize working environment. Description: Themes: Sectors: Product Types: The seven work package groups were composed, so that they existed of members from different countries in order to transfer experience and skills between each other and with the aim that the outcome should be a good and professional mix from all countries. And since interaction with colleagues from the different northern countries, was a vital element for the attainment of good results, physical meetings were held all through the project. 1-SE1-LE005-08378) Project Information Product information: Projecthomepage: The project delegates aimed to create a mutual syllabus, which could be the base for all sterile technician training. It should be transparent in order to enable work across borders and with an equal competence among future staff. The syllabus includes educational modules and methods, tutor criteria, student literature, validation and examination criteria. All document are, so far, in English. As an effect of the project and by having met the objectives the project has created enough momentum for the training to be adapted and made compulsory in our countries. The project came to a closure in Dec. 2013 and the result has been, and still is, spread within, and outside, Europe. Product 'Terms and Definitions' Vocational Education for Decontamination And Sterilization of medical equipment a Title: Terms and Definitions Product Type: program or curricula Marketing Text: To standardize specific terms in the professional field and make sure that the correct terms are used all through the project and in the project result. Also making sure that, through definitions, the documents produced, will help to facilitate the dissemination and reach out to a bigger audience. Activities will include 1) Identifying specific terms in the current field of expertise as well as retrieved information of current definitions documents within the medical sector. 2) Conduct new and updated standardized terms and definitions will be the objective. It will be presented in form of a document later attached to the Curriculum. Product 'Educational Methods and Materials' Title: Educational Methods and Materials Product Type: modules Marketing Text: To define a mutual educational methods and modules, including contents and expected outcomes, after qualifying in the different modules. The level should be a high minimum level. To identify current educational material and literature and define the possibility to use this, update, translate or produce new material for the transparent VET (Vocational Educational Training). The possible translation to native language or English will be an activity conducted by each country on its own, outside this project. Description: The WP contains two significantly different tasks The first activity is to identify and map current trainings in the world and from this analyze and suggest pedagogical educational methods which are satisfactory for all participating countries, but also from the perspective of VET trainers as well as from the world of work. It is essential that the training scheme includes both theoretical and practical training and that the result is a high, minimum level and in order to solidify the training, the future employers and other representatives of the world of work, need to be satisfied with the structure of the training. This will show the approved outcome of the education, both the theoretical and practical part. The aim is to define a standardized and transparent examination plan in accordance to the Bologna treaty, where the goal is to obtain degree standards, more comparable and compatible throughout Europe. Description: The work will include defining a standardized and transparent examination plan in accordance to the Bologna treaty to improve comparability between different programs and is vital for increasing mobility within the workforce. The written Examination document and Protocol, based on the EMM Part 1 document, will act as competence guidance for examiners, students and employers. Events Handing over the project result Date 30.01.2014 Description The curriculum VEDAS has been handed over to Project sponsor. We have met all objectives and can consider the project successful. Iceland,Latvia, Sweden and Finland are now running educations according to the VEDAS curriculum. Estonia and Norway are on their way and Lithuanian authorities have shown an interest although their financial situation puts it on hold for some time. We kept within the budget and can consider this successful as well. The curriculum can be found at website www.
