This program of study is designed for persons who: are employed as a full-time middle school teacher have already completed a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a 2.5 or higher GPA do not have a Missouri teaching certificate The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program of study leads to a Missouri initial teaching certificate in middle school (grades 5-9) as well as the MAT degree. What is the program of study? Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) The Master of Arts in Teaching requires 36 hours of credit, taken in 12 courses.

How does the MAT work? Students enter the MAT program after being hired by a school district to teach at the middle school level. Courses can be taken in seated fashion at Springfield or St. Robert, or taken online through Drury University. Students must take EDUC 607 and SCI 620 within the first two semesters of entering the program. What is the tuition for the Master of Arts in Teaching program? Tuition for the MAT will be determined through the Graduate Program Office. Students will pay the current tuition rate for graduate courses in education at Drury University. Is financial aid available? Drury University is approved for the TEACH program. Information regarding student loans may be obtained by contacting Drury University s Springfield Financial Aid Office at (417) 873-7312 or by visiting the Financial Aid web page at www.drury.edu/fa. Veterans: Students eligible for the G.I. Bill can receive benefits for graduate study. For questions regarding eligibility contact the Veterans Administration Counselor at Drury University s Springfield office (417) 873-7331. What are the requirements for admission to the program? Students must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning with a cumulative GPA no lower than 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Students must either have a degree in the area of certification or meet the state content area requirements. Students must be employed by a Missouri school district in their area of certification. The following items must be received by the Graduate Programs Office: Completed application for admission and $25 non-refundable application fee. The form may be

accessed on line at www.drury.edu\graduate. Official transcripts of all college coursework sent by the issuing institution. Student copies will not be accepted. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogy Test (MAT) scores not more than five years old. Two letters of recommendation from professional or educational sources. At least one must speak to your ability to work with children. A personal statement indicating the applicant s desire and ability to pursue a graduate degree. An interview with the Director of the School of Education and Child Development. The Teacher Education Council determines whether an individual is accepted to the program on the basis of the information obtained in the steps above. Because enrollment is limited, an individual should submit an application at the earliest possible date. If an applicant has previously been accepted into a graduate program, the GRE/MAT requirement may be waived. Foreign applicants are also required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOFEL). Information regarding the TOFEL may be obtained at www.tofel.org. What are the graduation requirements? Students must have an approved student teaching portfolio (Foliotek) Students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 with no grades below C. Students must successfully complete the 36 hour program What are the state teacher certification requirements? Students must pass the Praxis II examination in their area of certification at some point during the two year program.

What is included in the curriculum? The MAT program consists of the following courses: SCI 620 Technology in the Classroom (3 hours)* EDUC 605 Advanced Educational Psychology (3 hours) SS 624 The Home, School, and Community (3 hours) EDUC 632 Literacy Instruction in the Content Area (3 hours) EDUC 606 Education of the Exceptional Child (3 hours) EDUC 603 Middle School Philosophy (3 hours) EDUC 633 Middle School Curriculum (3 hours) EDUC 665 Improvement of Reading Instruction (3 hours) EDUC 607 Psychology of Human Growth and Development (3 hours)* EDUC 608 Classroom Management (3 hours) EDUC 699 Graduate Teaching Internship (3 hours)** One methods course (3 hours) SCI 622 for math certification SCI 631 for science certification SS 631 for social studies certification EDUC 609 for language arts certification *these courses need to be taken in the first two semesters **this course is taken during the last semester. During this course the interns will work with a university supervisor to complete the TWS II.
