The department offers masters degrees in counseling with a concentration in one of the following areas: Community Counseling School Counseling K-12 Student Affairs in Higher Education Gerontology Academic Prerequisites: Baccalaureate degree 15 semester hours in behavioral sciences or closely related fields with a 3.0 GPA for Community, Student Affairs and Gerontology Counseling applicants. Admission Process: 1. Apply to the UNO Graduate College, indicating your desire to be accepted into the counseling degree program. You can find the link to apply for admission to the Graduate College at: prospective/applyforadmission.php. After your application and transcripts are received by the Admissions Office and you are admitted as a graduate student the Graduate College will forward your application to the Department of Counseling. 2. Apply for Admission to the Counseling Department. Contact our admission coordinators at (402) The Department of Counseling will then provide you with additional information about the application procedures and assist you through the process. 7 Commonly Asked Q uestions Q: What behavioral sciences courses are needed to meet the admission pre-requisite? A: Examples of the behavioral sciences courses include; (i.e. sociology, psychology, anthropology, religion, philosophy, etc.) Fifteen semester hours are required with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. This prerequisite applies only to individuals seeking admission to the Community, Student Affairs, and Gerontology Counseling concentrations. Q: What is the graduate test required for entrance? A: There are three tests required: the MAT or GRE, the MMPI-2-RF and a short essay. Test scores from the Miller Analogy Test (MAT) or the verbal score on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) are required. The UNO Testing Center ( ) administers the MAT periodically during the academic year. Please call/visit the Testing Center to register for this test. The MMPI-2-RF and a short essay are administered by the Department of Counseling several times during each semester. There is a fee for the MAT and for the MMPI-2-RF. Q: I took the GRE (or MAT) two years ago. May I use those scores? A: Although the department prefers the MAT test scores, scores from the last two years for either test are acceptable. If you have taken a test more than once within the last two years, the highest score will be used. Q: What is a group interview and what can I expect? A: A small group of candidates (8 to 10) participates in a process group with two faculty members and one or two graduate assistants. This allows the faculty and graduate assistants to get to know you in a more personal way and to assess your interpersonal skills in a group setting. Interviews typically last from 1.5 to 2 hours. Candidates should conduct themselves as though this is a job interview. Q: I have several letters of recommendations. May I use them? A: The department requires three references from you and will send a form to each reference you list. This not only insures uniformity for quality assurance but also insures that the references are current. Q: Can I take any courses while I am entering the admission process? A: If on your admission application you request to take classes while your application to a degree program is being considered you can enroll in any class open to non-degree students. Classes required in the counseling program which are open to non-degree students are: TED 8010 Introduction to Research, COUN 8020 Introduction to Counseling, COUN 8110 Human Development and Psycho-Social Intervention Strategies, COUN 8226 Career Development and Lifestyle, COUN 8050 Introduction to Professional School Counseling. Q: How competitive is entrance into the counseling program? A: Each semester we accept approximately 30 new students and receive approximately 100 applications. Decisions are based on a composite score derived from responses of references and scores from the GRE/ MAT, essay, group interview and personal data information. Students not admitted on their first try may ask that their applications be reconsidered during the following application process. Application Process
8 As a non-traditional graduate student, I was able to research what program would best fit my needs, not just to get me a degree as fast as possible, but a degree that would prepare me for my future. UNO met those needs, through its accreditation standards, training program and knowledgeable faculty. Years after my graduation, UNO s program continues to help me forge my future. Kevin Kaminski UNO Graduate Community Counseling Program A Tradition of Excellence! In 1960, the University was the only site in Nebraska to train school teachers to become counselors as part of the National Defense Counseling and Guidance Training Institute. UNO established a formal Counseling Department in the Fall of 1965!
