Instructions for students Installation of Medcin Student Edition Version 2 Software Overview This document will guide you through installation of the Medcin Student Edition software on your personal computer. Do not attempt to install this software on a school or classroom computer yourself. The school s computer administrators or instructors will setup the classroom computers. You may use this software to complete hands-on exercises in the various Gartee Electronic Health Records textbooks. The same version of the software is used for the following three textbooks: Electronic Health Records: Understanding and Using Computerized Medical Records 2nd Edition Essentials of Electronic Health Records Electronic Health Records and Nursing The software is provided by download from the web site listed inside the cover of your textbook. In addition to the downloading the software, students will need to access the web site to perform online exercises in several chapters and comprehensive evaluation tests. If you have not already done so, follow the directions inside the cover of your textbook to register for the web site. Summary of software installation steps: A. Prepare for installation Read and follow these directions. Verify that your computer has Microsoft.NET Framework version 2.0 or higher. Remove any previous version of Medcin Student Edition software. Download and save 2 software installation files. B. Install the software First, install the Medcin Server. Next, install the Student Edition. Minimum Workstation requirements You must use a Windows (not a Mac) computer that meets the following requirements: Processor: 200 mhz Pentium Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 (or later) RAM: 64 megabytes (free not counting OS) Hard Drive: 300 megabytes free Display size (pixels per inch): 800 x 600 (1024 x 768 recommended) Number of colors: 256 (8 bit color) Mouse with at least 2 buttons (for left and right click) Internet Explorer version 6 or later Microsoft.NET Framework version 2 or later Installation of Software to accompany Gartee Electronic Health Records Books 1
Printers Your instructor will ask you to print the results of your exercises or to save them as a file. The Student Edition software uses standard Windows print services and should be compatible with most printers. If your instructor prefers for you to print to a file, the files are always created in the your My Documents directory. Software License The Medcin Student Edition software is licensed only for educational purposes. Schools are permitted to install it on school networks and/or classroom computers, as well as on individual instructor and student computers for the purpose of completing the exercises in various Gartee textbooks. By using this program, the user agrees that this product is not intended to suggest or replace any medical decisions or actions with respect to the patient s medical care and that the sole and exclusive responsibility for determining the accuracy, completeness, or appropriateness of any diagnostic, clinical, billing, or other medical information provided by the program and any underlying clinical database resides solely with a healthcare provider. Part A Prepare for installation Follow these 4 simple steps before beginning the installation in Part B. Step 1 Register for web site access If you have not already done so, follow the directions inside the front cover of the textbook to register and login. Step 2 Verify Microsoft.NET Framework Microsoft.NET Framework is a free computer language that is required to operate the Medcin software. During software installation, the install program will verify the version of Microsoft.NET framework is 2.0 or greater. If it is not, the installation will stop. Therefore, if you need to update your system, you want to do it now. Once you are logged in, go to the Browser Tuneup page. The Browser Tuneup is a tool that can be used to check your version of Microsoft.NET Framework and other required software. If you need to update your system, do so at this time. Links are available on the Browser Tuneup page. You can also obtain or update Microsoft.NET Framework by going to the web site Microsoft.com and doing a search for NET Framework. Microsoft may encouraged you to download a version newer than 2.0. That is acceptable. Step 3 Remove any previous version of the Medcin Student Edition software If the computer has a previous version of the Medcin Student Edition you should uninstall it before proceeding. Directions for removing a previous version are on the last page of this document. Step 4 Download and save the installation files Follow the directions inside the front cover of your textbook to access the web site. Go to the Download software page. Download and save the following two files: MedcinServer.msi MedcinSE.msi At the start of each download you may be prompted by a security question similar to Figure 1. Click on the button labeled Save. You will be prompted for a file location where the file is to be saved. Remember the name of the folder where you saved the files, you will need to know this later. Part B Installing the software using a Local configuration There are two methods of configuring the software; students use Local. First, install the Medcin Server Step 1 Login as an Admin user Every Windows computer has at least one admin user. You must login as an admin user while installing the software. If your user login does not normally have admin rights you will need to have the computer administrator install the software for you. Once the installation is complete, you will not need admin rights to run the application. Step 2 Install server Locate and click on the file named medcinserver.msi The Medcin Server Setup wizard welcome screen shown in Figure 2 will be displayed. labeled Next. The Choose Setup Type screen shown in Figure 3 will be displayed. Note: If instead of Figure 3, you see the error message that your version of the Microsoft.NET framework is not at least version 2 the installation will not proceed until you update the Microsoft component. Return to Part A, step 2 Verify Microsoft.NET Framework. Step 3 labeled Local, shown in Figure3. This will display the Ready to install confirmation screen shown in Figure 4. Step 4 labeled Install, shown in Figure 4. This will automatically install the server on the local computer without further questions or prompts. Figure 4 Click the button labeled Install to install the Medcin server on your computer. A status bar will appear as shown in Figure 5, indicating the progress of the installation. During the installation the Medcin server will be registered as a Windows service and automatically started. The screen shown Figure 6 will be briefly displayed. The server should minimize itself. If it does not, you can click the button labeled Hide shown in Figure 6. The Medcin Server must remain running to use the Student Edition software. You will never have to shut down the Medcin Server except to uninstall it. Important: If you have Firewall software on your computer, during or after the installation of the Medcin Server component you may see a message from your firewall software similar to Figure 7. If this occurs, select the option to Always Allow Connections to medcinserv.exe. If you see any other operating system message pertaining to starting or registering a service, deal with it at this time. You will not be able to proceed unless the server is running. Step 5 When the installation of the server has successfully completed the screen in Figure 8 will be displayed. Click on the button labeled Finish. Proceed to step 6. Figure 8 Completed Medcin Server Setup confirmation screen Next, install the Medcin Student Edition Once the server has successfully installed and is running, install the Student Edition software. Step 6 Locate and click on the file named medcinse.msi. The Medcin Student Edition Setup wizard welcome screen shown in Figure 9 will be displayed. labeled Next. Step 7 labeled Local shown in Figure 10. The Ready to install confirmation screen shown in Figure 11 will be displayed. Figure 10 Click on Local to choose the setup type. Step 8 labeled Install, shown in Figure 11. This will install the Medcin Student Edition software. A status bar will appear indicating the progress of the installation similar to the one shown earlier in Figure 5. Step 9 When installation has completed, a completed screen similar to, but not the same as Figure 8 will appear. Locate and click the button labeled Finish. Step 10 The installation program does not automatically delete the msi files. Part A Step 3 Uninstalling a previous version of the Medcin Student Edition If your computer has a previous version of the Medcin Student Edition you should uninstall it using the following steps. Step 1 Locate and click on the Medcin Server icon on the Windows task bar (usually near the computer time). The icon resembles Figure 12. Figure 12 Medcin server icon in Windows Taskbar. Step 2 Clicking the icon will open the Medcin Server window shown in Figure 13. Locate and click on the button labeled Shutdown. Step 3 Once the Medcin server has stopped, click on the Windows Control Panel and then click on Add/Remove programs.
