Each Austrian province has its own large-scale antenna system broadcasting television and radio programmes. Vienna has its own antenna farm. The Innsbruck 1-Patscherkofel transmitter is one of nine ORS large-scale antenna systems. INNOVATION, IDEAS AND EXPERTISE TERRESTRIAL BROADCASTING: TELEVISION AND RADIO Terrestrial broadcasting is currently going through a period of modernisation and increased innovation with the arrival of DVB-T2 (simplitv). Alongside satellite and cable broadcasting, it is globally the most important standard method of broadcasting television signals, and it is increasing in importance. ORS has over 30 years experience in terrestrial broadcast technology and operates an outstanding national and international broadcast network, providing service-driven solutions (individual measures and global solutions) from consulting and design through to market launch. ORS plans, implements and operates a nationwide transmitter network for digital and analogue television and radio broadcasting in Austria. Around 430 transmitters, including nine large-scale and 16 medium-scale antenna systems, are available for FM, DVB-T and DVB-T2 broadcasting, and for colocation usage. DAB+ The new digital age of radio The digital radio standard DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcast Plus) provides an attractive alternative to broadcasting radio via the FM frequency. ORS is responsible for test broadcasts via DAB+ in the Vienna area, which are carried out in partnership with the Austrian Digital Radio Association. ORS is also responsible for the normal operation of the Pfänder transmitter serving bordering areas in Germany and Switzerland. Since 2013, television viewers in Austria have been able to receive their favourite programmes via aerial and are able to watch many in high definition. simplitv is based on the digital terrestrial television standard DVB-T2 and ORS is responsible for operating the technical infrastructure. ORS has implemented an extensive advertising campaign in Austrian provinces, which have not yet fully made the gradual switchover from DVB-T to DVB-T2. The switchover started at the end of 2014 and is due to be completed by 2017. The simplitv signal can be received via an HD-ready set-top box, using the simplitv-box or a CI+ module, such as the simplitv module which is designed for television sets which include an integrated DVB-T2 tuner. The latest simplitv range, offering terrestrial digital television via aerial, allows customers to choose from two options a television service subscription or subscription plus an additional Internet package: Free HD Registration which allows subscribers to not only receive all the available channels from the Austrian national public service broadcaster ORF in HD (including ORFeins HD and ORF 2 HD), but also offers ATV HD, ServusTV HD and 3 Sat HD at no additional cost. ORF Sport+ HD and ORFIII HD will be available after the switchover from DVB-T. Additional standard definition channels and a wide range of radio channels are included free of charge. simplitv Subscription provides terrestrial digital television via aerial with a fantastic range of 40 channels (including HD). From autumn 2015, simplitv has also offered a TV+Internet package. SATELLITE THE SKY OVER EUROPE Across the skies above the whole of Europe, ORS offers reliable solutions for encrypted and unencrypted satellite services. BROADCAST CENTRE VIENNA ORS operates its own broadcast centre in Vienna, which covers the whole of Europe. ORS operates its own broadcast centre and satellite transmission station in Vienna to guarantee the faultless transmission of satellite signals. The satellite broadcast centre operated by ORS in Vienna distributes broadcasting signals across Europe. Simulcrypt encryption with several parallel conditional access (CA) systems (Irdeto, Irdeto Cryptoworks, Nagra, NDS, Mediaguard). The broadcast centre is fitted with all the facilities necessary for satellite broadcasting, including compression equipment, multiplexing equipment, data encryption tools and equipment used for satellite uplink, measurement and monitoring (operational 24/7). Three operational uplink satellite dishes and two reserves uplink dishes make up the ORS satellite transmission station. All key European satellites can be reached from our transmission station in Vienna, providing satellite coverage to around 60 million households that can be supplied with satellite channels. The full spectrum of satellite broadcast and satellite data transmission requirements are met by ORS facilities. ORS transmits content on behalf of customers such as programme makers (television, radio, teletext, data services, TV set-top box software) and then operates playout, encoding (conversion of a signal into the appropriate format for a given satellite channel), encryption (if required), multiplexing and satellite uplink. ORF electronics wholesalers, and is responsible for the distribution of ORF Digital Smart Cards to wholesalers. More than three million cards have been activated and are now in use in Austria. FLIMMIT IS AVAILABLE ON ANY DEVICE Flimmit is available on PC, laptop and Mac. It can also be viewed on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers, and is also available on television. Individual apps are available for mobile operating systems and Flimmit can beviewed on television via its own SmartTV app. In addition, it is possible to view European and German-language films via satellite using HbbTV. Investing in Flimmit has provided fresh impetus to ORS s core business and video-on-demand and non-linear video have strengthened this area of the business. The addition of Flimmit has also meant that new technologies, different consumer behaviour and, importantly, new competitors in the market are being taken into account.
