Faculty Profile Dr. George E. Higgins Classes taught: > Race and Gender Issues in Criminal Justice > Theories of Crime and Delinquency > Statistical Analysis > Drugs and Crime George E. Higgins received his Ph.D. in Criminology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2001. He was on the faculty in Criminal Justice at West Virginia State University. His research focuses on testing criminological theory and using advanced quantitative methods to better understand crime and deviance, as well as racial and gender/sex disparities in criminal justice. Dr. Higgins discusses why he loves teaching in the master s program at UofL. Dr. Higgins has contributed to a variety of research journals, books, and other publications, and he is no stranger to accolades for his work. Most recently, he was a UofL faculty favorite nominee and the recipient of the Coramae Richey Mann Leadership Award at the 2009 meeting of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

Program Curriculum UofL s Master of Science in Administration of Justice program gives you the knowledge and training you need to move forward in your career. The program requires a minimum of 36 credits for completion: a core of 15 hours, 18 hours of electives and 3 credits for the completion of a professional paper. The core curriculum includes an overview of the criminal justice system, theories of crime and delinquency, legal issues in criminal justice and advanced statistics and research methods. Elective courses cover specialized topics such as capital punishment, violent crime, domestic violence, criminal justice in media, international terrorism, substance abuse and justice policy, and issues in policing and ethics in criminal justice practice. Alumni Profile Police Chief Terri A. Wilfong Terri Wilfong became the 24th Chief of Police for the Greenville Police Department in March 2007. She arrived at Greenville by way of the Louisville Metro Police Department where she was the Assistant Chief/Support Bureau Commander. Chief Wilfong has more than 28 years of experience in law enforcement, beginning in 1981 as a Deputy Sheriff at the Jefferson County Sheriff s Office. In 1983 Chief Wilfong joined the Kentucky State Police until going to work for the Jefferson County Police Department, later Louisville Metro Police Department, in 1985. Now at the Greenville Police Department, Wilfong directs law enforcement efforts in this agency of 193 sworn officers and 52 civilian personnel. Quickly putting her knowledge to work, shortly after her hire Wilfong implemented re-engineering teams geared toward restructuring the department for greater accountability and enhanced efficiency. Wilfong earned her Master of Science in Administration of Justice from the University of Louisville in May 2009. She is grateful for the program and how it has complemented her years of experience, recommending it to officers in her agency.

The Online Learning Experience UofL uses the Blackboard course management system to facilitate online learning, giving each course its own online classroom. Just like traditional courses, Blackboard allows students in online classes to complete group projects (online), write papers, take exams, and more. Blackboard also offers students and faculty many ways to communicate and collaborate. You may be surprised by how much you communicate with other students in your online classes. Application Process Ready to jumpstart your future? You can start as early as the next term when you complete these steps in the application process. 1) Complete the online application for admission and pay the $50 non-refundable application fee. 2) Request and send official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate work. 3) Take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and send your test scores to UofL. 4) Write an original essay identifying your background, professional interests and goals. The essay should be 300-500 words and allow the faculty to better understand your motivation and potential for graduate work. 5) Submit at least two letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to your academic and/or professional capabilities and potential. Typically, but not always, these letters should be written by undergraduate professors who can speak to your ability to perform graduate work. Tuition & Financial Aid Tuition Tuition for online courses is the same for both in-state and out-of-state students. Courses offered online and charged according to the rate below are designated in the schedule of courses. To see online courses only, select Distance Education in the location field. Fall 2009, spring 2010 and summer 2010 online learning tuition is $622.70 per graduatelevel credit hour.
