PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: Describe what the program is designed to achieve and explain how it is structured in order to accomplish the objectives. The mission of this program is to provide students with a systems perspective of the criminal justice system, including law enforcement, courts, corrections, the private sector, and a relationship to academia. The program is designed to produce graduates who are able to utilize their systems perspective and analytic skills to create appropriate professional decision making at all levels within the criminal justice system. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates can pursue entry-level positions with local, state, or federal law-enforcement agencies and correctional organizations. Graduates also have open avenues for advancement into casework and counselor positions and beyond. The major competencies of the criminal justice bachelor degree graduate include knowledge of the criminal justice system and the law, the theoretical causes of criminality, the methods of criminal justice policy research, as well as aspects of professionalism and ethics for criminal justice practitioners. Program Objectives Upon graduation a student will: 1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the criminal justice system and the roles and responsibilities of various positions in the field. 2. Apply ethical decision making to situations within the criminal justice system. 3. Utilize an in-depth knowledge of the criminal justice system to identify and resolve challenges encountered in a criminal justice career. 4. Analyze, evaluate, develop, and support opinions on the ongoing and changing impact and role of the criminal justice system in relation to the community, the police, corrections, and the court systems. 5. Identify, assess, and apply practices to address the impact of major social issues related to crime, criminals, victims, prevention, and control.
