1 Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) Program OFF-CAMPUS PROGRAMS at Northern Michigan University The Doctor of Education degree from Central Michigan University will be offered beginning Fall Term 2010 at Northern Michigan University. This program is specifically designed to offer students who have completed their Ed.S. degree a convenient local option for completing their Ed.D. degree. Other potential students may apply for this program if they have a conferred master's degree. However, only the core courses for the Ed.D. will be offered at NMU. Students without Ed.S. degrees will have to earn 12 credits of academic core courses and 9 credits of a concentration. These credits can be taken at CMU's Mount Pleasant campus or may possibly transfer in from another graduate school. All transfer credit options must be approved by either the program director or the student's advisor. Admission requirements In order to be considered for admission to Central Michigan University's Ed.D. program at NMU, an applicant must have completed a master's degree with a minimum graduate GPA of 3.5 and must have completed three years of professional educational experience. (Preference will be given to those with administrative leadership experience and who have earned an Ed.S. degree.) Review of completed applications begins February 1, A completed application packet will include: 1. A completed graduate application (complete online at or complete and return enclosed paper application form) and $50.00 application fee; for those who took EDL 700, the application fee will be waived. Applicant type: Doctoral-Program: Ed.S. Doctor of Education 2. Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work; 3. Resume of professional education experience; 4. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Miller Analogy Test (MAT) scores; 5. One page essay describing the relationship between the applicant's professional goals and the Ed.D. program; 6. Description of a professional problem the applicant has encountered and an analysis of the resolution of that problem; 7. Three letters of recommendation (dated, on organizational letterhead) that attest to the applicant's potential to succeed in the program. Program at NMU Attn: Judy Nemitz Traverse City Center 2200 Dendrinos Drive, Suite 200 Q Traverse City, MI Interview and review of portfolio (see below) Application and Portfolio deadline: February 1, 2010 After reviewing the credentials of the applicants, the doctoral program committee will select those to be interviewed. The Ed.D. admission committee will select participants for the cohort from those interviewed. Preference will be given to those applicants who have a demonstrated history of educational leadership and who have career goals consistent with the expectations of this program. Registration procedure Once admitted, you will receive a course schedule listing the registration dates for classes. Cohort participants are usually registered automatically for the next class by the local center. Payment is expected promptly upon receiving the university billing statement at your cmich account. Payment may be made by check, credit card, or employer s voucher. (see reverse side)

2 Program delivery The Ed.D. program at NMU will be offered in a cohort format. A cohort consists of about 20 students who follow a set schedule of courses together from start to finish. Most classes will meet on four weekends per term on Friday evenings and on Saturday. Classes will run through For students who have earned their Ed.S. degree, this program will take you 4 semesters plus one summer to complete your course work and comprehensive exams. The average student then takes an additional 18 to 24 months to complete the dissertation. Degree requirements: Progress through the program is based upon obtaining satisfactory grades (a 3.25 GPA average overall), passing written and oral comprehensive exams, and completing a doctoral dissertation. Students who have earned an Educational Specialist degree may be able to waive some program requirements. Research requirements (9 hours) The research component encompasses both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The competencies to be developed are essential to interpreting and evaluating research studies to be encountered in all course work as well as to completing the dissertation requirement. EDL 700 (3) Advanced Research Methods (some will have completed Summer 2009) EDL 800 (3) Qualitative Analysis in Educational Leadership EDL 801 (3) Quantitative Analysis in Educational Leadership Academic core (21 hours) The academic core component includes all of the critical areas of study for future educational leaders: foundations, organizational and leadership analyses, and the issues which change and dominate over time. The courses are designed to provide students with the underpinnings to understand and to act effectively upon the challenges confronting the educational organization. EDL 815 (3) Ethical Leadership EDL 855 (3) Organizational Culture and Change in Educational Institutions EDL 860 (3) Organizational Theory in Educational Institutions EDL 899 (6) Doctoral Seminar EDL 775/876 (3) Educational Policy EDL 897 (3) Dissertation Proposal Writing Qualifying exams Students will be expected to take written qualifying exams upon the completion of their academic core classes. Comprehensive review of all program materials is completed with the successful defense of a student s dissertation proposal. At this point, students are advanced to candidacy. Dissertation (12 hours) EDL 898 The student will complete three steps in the dissertation process: 1. The proposal review stage in which there is a formal defense of the dissertation proposal; 2. Conducting the research, analyzing the results, and writing the final document; 3. An oral defense of the dissertation.

Faculty Faculty for Central Michigan University s Ed.D. program are recognized doctorate-level authorities in their fields. They bring the latest theory, research and practice to their classrooms. Most faculty come from CMU s main campus in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Our instructors are one of our greatest assets. Advising A program plan will be developed by your academic advisor to ensure all degree requirements are met. In order to graduate, you must have a final program plan completed and signed by your advisor at the time you apply for graduation. Because programs offered in the cohort format are designed for delivery to a group of students, the courses are offered in a predetermined sequential order. With few exceptions, all students will take the same classes at the same time with little (if any) variation in their individual program plans. Your academic advisor will serve as your academic connection to the university and can help you with any academic issues that arise. Cohorts help you succeed Cohorts offer some special advantages to you. You can develop strong personal and professional networks because you and your fellow cohort members are together for all of your courses. Cohort groups are able to grasp new material quickly because your cohort develops a shared base of knowledge upon which your instructors can build. Finally, the likelihood that you will successfully complete the degree program increases significantly in a cohort format because of the camaraderie that develops among students who become friends as well as fellow classmates and colleagues. Professional full-time librarians located on campus and in regional offices around the country are available to provide you with reference and referral assistance. Additional support staff and document delivery specialists work to meet your needs as an off-campus student. Books and copies of journal articles are sent to you usually within 24 to 48 hours after your request is received.
