3 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The College of New Rochelle s Multilingual/Multicultural Education programs recognize the diversity of linguistic backgrounds and cultures which characterize the children and families in schools in the New York metropolitan area. Our programs stress language and linguistics, teaching methodology, cultural awareness, and understanding of special developmental needs of native language learners. We prepare our graduates to teach in the pre-kindergarten, elementary, and secondary grades (Pre-K-12). Through the knowledge, skills, and cultural sensitivities offered by the program, prospective teachers are enabled to address the needs of children whose primary language is other than English. COURSE LOCATIONS AND SCHEDULING A full program schedule can be obtained by visiting Students will move through the program in groups called cohorts. You remain with the cohort through the completion of your degree. TUITION Each 3 credit course will cost $1,260. Payment should be made directly to The College of New Rochelle. Financial aid, in the form of loans, is available through The College of New Rochelle Financial Aid office for eligible students. Course tuition is subject to annual percentage increase. TRANSFER CREDITS The number of transfer credits for this program is 20% of the total program credits which would be considered upon admission to the program. Therefore, this would allow up to 3 credits of graduate coursework for transfer. Transfer credits must be presented at time of admission. ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS For matriculation into our New York State Education Department-approved Advanced Certificate program in Multilingual/Multicultural Education leading to a Bilingual Extension of a current certification, all applicants are governed by the general admissions requirements for the Graduate School. Applicants for this program must submit the following: Official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate schools previously attended. Student copies are not acceptable. Two signed letters of recommendation submitted by school administrators, college professors or other persons who have direct knowledge of the applicant s potential for success in the program. A personal statement of 300 words indicating one s educational and professional goals and reasons for choosing this graduate program of study. Proof of immunizations for measles, mumps, and rubella. To be admitted into the Graduate School with or without intending to obtain the advanced certificate, (i.e., as a matriculated or as a non-matriculated student), the Graduate School requires proof that the student holds a bachelor s degree from an accredited undergraduate institution. The applicant must have maintained at least a B (3.0) average in one s major field and had an overall grade point average of at least B- (2.7). An applicant whose undergraduate index was less than 2.7 may, in some circumstances, be admitted on probation. In addition to the general requirements listed above, students seeking admission into the Advanced Certificate in Multilingual/Multicultural Education leading to Bilingual Extension must submit the following: A copy of the New York State monolingual certification that the applicant is seeking to extend. A passing score on the bilingual education assessment (BEA).
