Putting Visions On Track
Moving Forward for 100 Years
The roots of Vossloh Rail Vehicles reach back to the very beginnings of the railways and ever since we have been moving forward in the best interests of our customers. Here are some of the milestones along our route: In 1891, a metalworker entrepreneur from Valencia founded Talleres Devis, the origin of today's plant. By 1929, now under the name of Construcciones Devis, the Valencian workshop had positioned itself in the front line of railway product manufacturers. Its achievements were most notable in the field of freight car repairs and it entered a phase of industrial expansion that made it a national name. The merger in 1947 with the Catalonian company Material para Ferrocarril y Construcciones gave birth to MACOSA (Material y Construcciones SA) and it was during this period that the Company specialized in the manufacture of rolling stock. 1997 was the year it moved to its modern plant in Albuixech. Throughout this long period more than one thousand locomotives of all types steam, dieselelectric, electric and shunters plus other rolling stock items and components such as trams, metros, diesel engines and electric motors, freight cars and thousands of bogies have left the plant for destinations throughout the world. On March 31, 2005, Vossloh AG, one of the leading companies in the rail sector completed its acquisition of the engineering and production facilities, which, because of its high level of technology and the experience of its employees, has established itself as a leader in the diesel-electric locomotive segment. Commuting without having to change vehicles As the leading supplier in the autonomous region of Valencia, Vossloh Rail Vehicles has designed Spain s first train-tram a greener, more flexible, faster, and more efficient mode of transport. 14
The train-tram is an articulated light rail vehicle that functions as a tram within the city and a train between the cities. Bi-directional, it will run above ground and underground. The big advantage for commuter travel is that there is no need to change vehicles. Hence, journey times are that very much shorter. With its smart, stylish design, this highly functional and comfortable vehicle is one of Vossloh s solutions for enhanced sustainability and promoting passenger rail transport. 15
Tramlink the new family of modular Vossloh trams Tramlink benefits from Vossloh s expertise in developing passenger vehicles, the Group s track record of designing, assembling and building complete vehicles, as well as from the high level of technological know-how in the development of heavy-duty bogies that ensure not only the best possible performance but also optimum ride comfort for passengers and drivers alike. Tramlink family Tramlink is a family of custom-tailored low-floor, extendable trams for metric or UIC gauge tracks, consisting of multi-articulated 3-, 5- or 7-car units with a total length of 21 up to 46 m. The trams can be supplied in body widths of 2.3, 2.4 or 2.65 m. The new Tramlink features the latest technology combined with great ride comfort, a novel bogie design, and a high-strength structure. Durability The Tramlink family has been designed for maximum service life at minimum maintenance cost. The high elastic limit of the absolutely noncorrosive bodywork fully meets all European standards on stress and force resistance, fatigue strength and crashworthiness. 16
Negotiability Thanks to its design, the Tramlink can satisfy the most exacting present and future requirements including the ability to negotiate even narrow bends, steep slopes, irregular line layouts, etc. Comfort Inside the tram, passengers can pass from one car to the next freely and at the same level thanks to bellow joints and articulated railings since any relative movement between the cars is thus compensated, enabling passengers to walk comfortably and safely through the aisle. Moreover, the new concept permits up to 16 seats to be installed in the area above the bogies. 17
More power for more productivity Power is more than just kilowatts. It s the cost-efficiency benefits that extra power can give customers. With this in mind, we develop powerful locomotives designed to allow economical, multifunctional cross-border operation. EURO4000 Europe's most powerful diesel-electric locomotive: the EURO4000 The EURO 4000 diesel-electric from Vossloh Rail Vehicles is Europe s most powerful diesel-electric locomotive. With its high tractive force it can haul all types of trains faster than any other diesel-electric locomotive. Designed for pan-european operation, it adapts easily to various rail networks and is fully prepared for ERTMS, the European Rail Traffic Management System. The noise and emission levels comply with European standards. EURO3000 More competitive passenger transport with a 200 km/h locomotive With this Bo-Bo diesel locomotive for high-speed passenger trains and 22.5 t/axle loads on Iberian and international gauges, rail travel becomes even more attractive: high-speed connections and no time-consuming vehicle changes. The unit also complies with UIC 518 regarding track strain, safety, and performance quality; according to ENV 12299 it ranks in the comfort category. Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD), the world s largest manufacturer of diesel engines, builds the 16-cylinder, V-type 16-710 engine, which develops 3,178 kw. 18

EURODUAL Electric and Diesel-electric powered locomotive Even if the general tendency is to have a higher degree of electrification, still many industrial areas, yards, lines to mining or timber loading terminals and secondary lines as feeder of main rail corridors, are non-electrified lines. Vossloh Rail Vehicles has developed dual-mode locomotives that are able to run both on a pantograph and with a diesel drive. A real dual-mode locomotive Powerful locomotive able to run up to 200km/h (freight version up to 120km/h): - From 700 kw up to 2800kW in diesel mode - Up to 6000kW in electrical mode. Able for different power supply voltage with ABB traction. Operational flexibility and transport costs reduction One locomotive, instead of two, to run on any type of lines, electrified or not. Environmental friendly Better global energy consumption efficiency by using the most suitable energy source. EURODUAL takes advance of both types of traction: the flexibility of the diesel locomotives and the lower energy costs and no-pollution of the electric ones. Based on existing EURO4000 and EUROLIGHT locomotive platforms Benefits from the existing solutions and equipment already developed and in use in Vossloh s existing locomotives, as the bodyshell, bogies (CoCo and BoBo configurations), cab design or braking system. 20

Shouldering responsibility for the future In the wake of globalization and the need to transport increasing numbers of people and ever larger volumes of freight, mobility now plays a crucial role in modern society. But can this task be mastered with present-day national and international mass mobility strategies? We are convinced that intelligent rail transport constitutes the long-term and, above all, sustainable solution. Among the modes of transportation, rail is superior in slowing down the greenhouse effect, sparing our natural resources and upgrading our quality of life. In the field of public transport above all urban our metro or train-tram solutions are making inner cities more attractive by lowering the level of noise pollution, reducing endless traffic jams and the number of traffic accidents and therefore curbing the collateral economic damage. In the field of freight transport, our locomotives already use only a quarter (on average) of the energy swallowed by a truck. As a result of our joint efforts with universities to develop innovative solutions, the advantages of rail transport will be even more evident in the near future, both with regard to its cost-efficiency and its impact on the environment 26
