Steele s in the 1911 census It is not known why some spelt their surname with the additional e and in some branches of the family it seems to come and go with generations. It is possible down to the census enumerators and how they decided to spell it. Some entries in the census have the extra e on the original form but it gets dropped in the transcriptions. Most of the families that use the e are in the Kendal area rather than the East and West Wards. There are 40 people using the surname Steele in the 1911 census, all in Kendal with the exception of: Kirkby Thore, Ellen Steele (Reading Berkshire 1863 a widow) and Herbert Spencer Steele a visitor in the same household (Balham Surrey 1889). Herbert is Ellen s son the 1891 census shows them with Ellen s husband Thomas G Steele (1863 Swansea). She is a cook for Thomas Watson Anderson a clergyman born in Dufton. Crosby Garrett, Kirkby Stephen, William G Steele, (London 1891) The remaining Steele s are all in Kendal listed by area. None of these have yet been investigated but on the face of it they do not appear to have any relationship.
