WHITE PAPER November 2013 Get Dynamic. Get Results. The Evolving Role of System z in the Dynamic Data Center David Hodgson CA Technologies System z Product Management

White Paper: The Evolving Role of System z in the Dynamic Data Center ca.com Table of Contents Executive Summary 3 Section 1: 4 Dynamic Business Demands Dynamic IT Section 2: 6 The Dynamic Data Center Section 3: 11 Deliver Greater Results in Less Time Section 4: 11 Conclusions

White Paper: The Evolving Role of System z in the Dynamic Data Center ca.com Executive Summary Challenge The moment of truth has arrived: corporate IT is no longer completely in charge of the data and computing assets that run the business. Consumerization of IT and the emerging tech savvy workforce are driving changes in the data center at an unprecedented pace. At the same time, technology trends such as Big Data, cloud and mobile computing are driving phenomenal growth in transaction and data volumes. As a result, business demands are outpacing IT capacity to deliver. With off-premise sourcing and access, the data center has become infinitely scalable with no boundaries; we call this the Dynamic Data Center. Opportunity These changes offer IT an opportunity to shift, adapt and become a valuable enabler of innovation. By transforming the data center to be more dynamic that is by bringing together people, process, tools and technology to dynamically expand and contract the data center to drive unbounded business enablement IT can: Dramatically change how the data center is managed. Optimize performance and visibility across the enterprise. Innovate across System z, distributed and into the cloud. Benefits CA Technologies helps organizations manage the growing complexities of the Dynamic Data Center by enabling IT to simplify, automate and integrate across platforms and management disciplines to become the vital source of service and expertise to the business. Solutions from CA Technologies can help customers deliver greater results in less time: Increase ROI up to 75% with integrated IT solutions 1 Reduce cost to manage workloads up to 70% 2 Drive productivity savings of up to 400 percent by simplifying management 3 Reduce storage costs by up to 80% 4

White Paper: The Evolving Role of System z in the Dynamic Data Center ca.com Section 1: Dynamic Business Demands Dynamic IT Businesses today are operating at a velocity that has introduced incredible and sometimes unexpected demands on the data center. The emergence of shadow IT and the explosion of mobile applications are forcing data center operations to dynamically expand and contract at the will of the users resulting in a state we call the Dynamic Data Center. The Dynamic Data Center Although in this dynamic reality the data center is still managed by IT, it is now at the center of an information ecosystem that cannot be fully controlled by IT at least not in the traditional command and control sense. To keep IT at the center of your enterprise data environment, you need a strategy to shift with the data center s changing dynamic. The Dynamic Data Center consists of four dimensions people, process, tools and technology all working to meet the needs of the business. As one dimension changes, the others need to adapt and would ideally work in unison. However, in today s IT environment, all four dimensions are rapidly changing at the same time. To be successful working inside such a dynamic environment, IT organizations should embrace these changes, and turn them into opportunities to accelerate delivery of services to the business. Dynamic People Today s dynamic workforce brings new skills, attitudes and values into the enterprise. The next generation of IT does not resemble the last; they work and learn differently. Generation Y is accustomed to cellphones, social media and instantaneous, pervasive connectivity. This tech-savvy workforce currently makes up 25% of the workforce and in 10 years will be over 70%. This demographic shift means that there will be fewer people skilled in operating mature technology. To address this shift, organizations need to empower IT staff to collaborate on what they re doing and how they do it, and continuously reevaluate how they are working. The Dynamic Data Center needs to facilitate knowledge sharing to enable new IT staff to be agile and effective at managing critical enterprise applications and systems. Dynamic Process The data center exists to put business processes into action. When business units can leverage the cloud to deliver applications and automate processes by themselves, IT s role in the business process changes. This shift from sole arbiter of process to enabler and integrator is critical, affecting compliance and security, risk and reliability. Process innovation must provide the insight and control essential for IT organizations to power business agility. Dynamic processes can provide key benefits, including the ability to: Generate the agility and flexibility to drive improved business responsiveness, cut costs and reduce risks. Accelerate business results through automation and integration to foster holistic management of complex computing environments.

White Paper: The Evolving Role of System z in the Dynamic Data Center ca.com Dynamic Tools IT executives often describe the biggest challenge they face as the 50:20:20 problem. They are being asked to build systems to handle 50% more transactions per year; increase capacity by 20% per annum; and reduce costs by 20% annually. To address this challenge, IT organizations need to transform from maintenance mode to becoming a dynamic enabler of innovation for the business. When the data center is dynamic, the tools that manage it must be equally adaptable. These tools must have modern interfaces more acceptable to a new generation of workers who need to come up to speed quickly. These tools must be flexible enough to transcend traditional IT structures to enable holistic management across System z, distributed and cloud. Dynamic tools are critical for maintaining accountability and order in an increasingly complex environment, integrating IT disciplines to reduce costs and improve efficiencies empowering your staff to work smarter, not harder. The benefits of using dynamic tools include the ability to: Automate routine and labor-intensive tasks to remove complexity and reduce risks. Instantly provide users with the information they need to accelerate service delivery and problem resolution. Manage risks to provide business continuity and optimal performance. Quickly deploy new applications across the enterprise with greater accuracy. Monitor your enterprise in real time and allocate IT resources based on demand. Dynamic Technology Business today requires the ability to spin up new workloads rapidly. SaaS companies offer same day, immediate startup as do IaaS partners like Amazon Web Services (AWS). Business related events and cycles might generate 100,000s of connections one day with a large drop off the next. A workload that runs well in one environment with one loading may be best suited to another platform under stress. The decision on workload placement is specific to a particular business, but includes all the factors of Quality of Service; cost, response time, reliability etc. The one thing that is consistent is that IT departments that can embrace and offer true agility in workload placement will bring a real competitive edge to their company. For our customers the Dynamic Data Center must support workloads in an expanding hybrid infrastructure that spans System z, distributed systems and the cloud. The Dynamic Data Center of the future also will see systems, storage and networks as software defined entities enabling IT managers to free themselves from hardware limitations and change and adapt their hardware components to meet any unique enterprise requirement. The dynamic nature of enterprise systems means the mix of services and environments can change rapidly; this means managers must be able to coordinate all components in an organized fashion to keep all the pieces moving in the same direction.

White Paper: The Evolving Role of System z in the Dynamic Data Center ca.com According to a study by technology economist Dr. Howard Rubin, mainframe-centric organizations experienced 35% lower costs on average (across all platforms) than those in server-centric environments. Dr. Howard Rubin, The Surprising Technology Economics of Mainframes vs. Distributed Servers, Oct. 1, 2012 For large enterprise customers IBM System z can be the cornerstone of a well architected Dynamic Data Center, addressing many critical needs: Because System z handles high transaction volumes in a highly secure manner with superior reliability and 99.999% availability, it is the ideal platform to handle the significant growth in transactions and data volumes resulting from new mobile applications, Big Data and cloud initiatives. Improvements in System z processor speed and cache make it ideal for processing data-intensive business analytics queries. System z has the ability to tightly-couple POWER- and x86-blades, providing consistent governance across each environment, which can lower the cost of physical and virtual systems management significantly. With its best-in-the-industry virtualization/provisioning/workload management tools and utilities, System z is ideally positioned to serve as a cloud-in-a-box environment or as an integration hub that can work seamlessly with distributed servers to deliver applications as services (clouds). System z front-ends much of the enterprise s run-the-business data, providing secure pathways to back-end data for users who want mobile access to that data from anywhere, anytime, on any device. Section 2: The Dynamic Data Center At the heart of the global economy sits the System z, processing billions of transactions and zetabytes of data every minute, every day. Organizations with System z need to evolve their data centers to reflect today s business realities, while reducing costs, increasing ROI and accelerating productivity. They need to embrace the concept of managing the Dynamic Data Center. Best-in-class software management solutions enable organizations to simplify, automate and integrate across a heterogeneous IT infrastructure to increase overall data center performance and efficiency. CA Technologies offers a rich portfolio of cross-enterprise management solutions designed to: Dramatically improve data center management. Optimize performance and visibility across the enterprise.
