Dermatology Associates of KY, PSC Job Description Job Title: Perioperative R.N. Department: Ambulatory Surgery Center Reports To: ASC Manager FLSA Status: Non-Exempt;Hourly; Full-Time Summary Responsible for assessing, planning, and implementing the nursing care patients receive before, during and after surgery within the scope of practice as determined by the KY Board of Nursing. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Circulating Nurse Duties: Prepares recovery room for patients. Dispenses narcotic prescription pads to employees in the ASC and secures narcotic pads at the end of the shift. Verifies the patient's identity and necessary consent forms. Reviews patient history and assessment for completeness and develops an individualized perioperative patient plan of care. Implements the plan of care by: Protecting the patient from injury by performing an individualized risk assessment; Performing interventions necessary to ensure that the patient's procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level; Communicating the patient's current status to the appropriate parties throughout the continuum of care; Administering medications safely and correctly; Performing interventions to maintain the patient's vitals signs and respiratory status at or above baseline levels; Performing interventions to protect the patient from surgical site infection; Assessing the knowledge level of the patient or designated support person; Providing education regarding the expected psychosocial response, medication management, pain management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure; Actively involving the patient or designated support person in decisions affecting his or her perioperative plan of care; Protecting the patient's rights, dignity, and privacy; Observing the patient, recording significant conditions and reactions, and notifying the Physician of patient's condition and reaction to drugs, treatments and significant incidents. Scrub Nurse Duties: Ensures OR is clean and setup correctly. Prepares instruments and equipment needed for surgery. Explains procedures and treatments to patients/performs preoperative assessment. Accurately and thoroughly documents medical visits and procedures using Electronic Health Records (EHR) and transcribes medical notes dictated by surgeon. Assists patients with putting on gowns and drapes patients with covering.
Prepares and administers local anesthesia. Assists team members to place and position patient on table. Performs surgical counts before and after surgery. Scrubs arms and hands and dons gown and gloves, and aids team to don gowns and gloves. Cuts sutures and performs other tasks as directed by surgeon during operation. Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient. Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies Physician of patient s condition and reaction to drugs, treatments and significant incidents. Puts dressings on patient following surgery and explains wound care instructions. Washes and sterilizes equipment and cleans operating room. Infection Control Duties Maintains current knowledge of infection control standards and practices from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Develops, reviews, and evaluates infection control policies and procedures in compliance with guidelines and regulations. Provides training in infection control and sterilization processes for all ASC personnel upon hire and annually thereafter. Evaluates staff competency in these processes through observation and/or written tests. Collects and analyzes data in order to prevent and mitigate risk through: Active surveillance of the ASC s sanitary environment through logs, reports, etc. Investigation of post-operative infections and employee occupational exposures. Monitoring employee compliance with facility infection control and sanitation policies. Reports progress, goals, data, recommendations, and trends to the Medical Director, Continuous Quality Improvement Committee, and Governing Board. Ensures immediate and effective corrective action to incidents of healthcare associated infections. Meets with surveyors and inspectors regarding the infection control program. Earns continuing education credits in infection control related topics annually. Other RN duties: Responds to life saving situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures and protocol. Participates in quality improvement activities. Inventories and orders medical supplies and materials. Schedules appointments. Assists clinical staff with post-operative questions from patients. Checks for expired medications on a weekly basis.
