CERTIFICATE IN BALLET TEACHING STUDIES This programme provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required by ballet teachers at the start of their careers. With a focus on RAD syllabi, you will explore the development and progression of ballet technique alongside acquiring teaching skills appropriate for the private dance studio. The programme also provides an excellent stepping stone for further study as a dance teacher. The Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies (CBTS) is studied parttime over two years, enabling you to combine personal and professional commitments alongside your studies. The programme commences in January of each year and as a part-time student you should expect to study for a minimum of 20 hours per week. In Year 1 you will study three modules through distance learning, as well as attending an Intensive Study Period, ten days in duration, in your country of residence in August/September. Each module is supported by a detailed Module Study Guide with study tasks. You will be supported every step of the way by a tutor with whom you will have regular contact through online forums, email and telephone communications. In Year 2 you will undertake a practical teaching placement over 30 weeks. You will be supported by an approved Mentor in a dance school local to you, as well as an RAD appointed Practical Teaching Supervisor. You will also create a professional portfolio which provides evidence to potential employers of your achievements as a ballet teacher. Level/Credits January EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS Graduates who have completed CBTS have gone on to work all over the world as ballet teachers in a variety of contexts. What the students say Having already trained at two top vocational schools I didn t think there could be a lot more to learn; however, I was mistaken! The course has already enabled me to become a competent teacher and I hope to learn a lot more before the end of my studies. Katie Pick, Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies As I teach full time, the evenings, weekends and holidays are my main study times, but as much of what I am studying can be put into practice, I feel that I am also studying practically during the working day. Belinda Ellicott, BA (Hons) Dance Education The BADE programme has been instrumental in expanding and augmenting my teaching practice, my choreographic practice and my ability to research, comprehend and process the wider worlds of dance, art and music. Helen Linkenbagh, BA (Hons) Dance Education graduate, current student on Master of Teaching (Dance) As a professional dancer and teacher, the flexible structure of the PDPTC programme can easily be incorporated into my work schedule. The subjects and study tasks are interesting and have really opened my eyes in terms of the best teaching methods to adopt for the future. Hendryk Vos, Professional Dancers Postgraduate Teaching Certificate (Berlin) The course is designed to cater for different personal interests in dance education and ensure an exellent understanding of the key thinking and issues that underpin all educational practices. Ray Oudkerk, Master of Teaching (Dance) The skills and knowledge I have learned have informed every area of my professional practice, particularly in how I can back up difficult policy recommendations or advocacy with non-artform colleagues and government. In addition, the programme has contributed to personal strategies in managing workload and commitments. Katy Howitt, Master of Teaching (Dance) 8 9
