International Association of Biblical Counselors Regional Conference Hope & Help Through Biblical Counseling Thursday, November 1 6:00 Check-In and On-Site Registration 7:00 - Conference Welcome 7:15 Plenary Session #1 Hope & Help: Counseling and the doctrine of Creation Sanctuary Dr. David Tyler 8:15 Break 8:30 - Workshop Session #1 Hope and Help Can You Really Have That When There Is So Much Suffering? Part One Room #1 Dr. Kevin Hurt How Long, O Lord? This is an often repeated question in the Scriptures as God's people find themselves struggling with the issue of evil and the problems they face in this world. And just as it was then so it is today. As God's people we also face such questions. We ask, "How long, O Lord will it be until the trial I'm in comes to an end? How long, O Lord will it be until my child turns to you?", "How long, O Lord will this illness last?", "How long, O lord...?" The questions continue to mount in our hearts with every imaginable challenge we face as we try to make sense of why we struggle so much in our lives. If this is a question you or your counselee is asking, then you will want to attend this two-part workshop. It will address the topic of suffering and offer a Biblical perspective on how to find help and hope. Where We Can Find Hope Room #2 Dr. Ed Bulkley Christians who are struggling with difficulties and problems need to understand the Bible offers practical solutions. Hope is not found in man s philosophies, but in the sufficient Word of God. Counseling Abandoned Women Room #3 Mrs. Julie Ganschow This session addresses the practical and spiritual issues of life when a woman is abandoned by her husband. Evangelism in the Counseling Room: The Very Power of God Room #4 Dr. Mark Hagar Biblical counseling is one of the greatest evangelistic opportunities we will ever face in the church today, so we must be prepared to address the most powerful part of the change process the gospel! In this workshop you will learn how to effectively and comfortably evangelize in the counseling setting. You will be provided several unique illustrations that will help transition conversations and topics to the gospel. Additionally, you will learn ways to evangelize your community, connect outside counseling prospects to your church and to effectively evangelize religious people. Christian Women and Contentment Room #5 Mrs. Connie Cummings Is happiness your goal or contentment? Is there a difference? Discontentment in our culture and among Christians today is a huge problem but it is not new. It is displayed in many ways. We will look at the characteristics of discontentment, examples from Scripture and the consequences of it and the Scriptural warnings against it. Workshop is for women only 2

Friday, November 2 9:00 Plenary Session #2 The Practical Effects of Hope and How It Helps in Our Daily Lives Sanctuary Dr. Ed Bulkley 10:00 Break 10:15 Workshop Session # 2 Faith: the Ability to HOPE Beyond the Restrictions of the Present Room #1 Mrs. Marlowe Bulkley We will be checking out a few Heroes of Faith who lived by this principle to see how they survived the pressures of the world they were living in and the hope that kept them persevering through tough times. Taking Christ to Those Who Are Troubled and Hurting Room #2 Rev. Scott Tyler Every person will experience problems and tragedies in their life. Jesus said, In the world you will have tribulation. Oftentimes, a person becomes more open to the gospel when they are hurting and experiencing troubles. Counseling opportunities become opportunities to lead your counselee to Christ. The Repentant and the Unrepentant: Contrasts from Peter and Judas Room #3 Mr. Larry Ganschow In this session we will compare and contrast various aspects of repentance as we look at two important biblical figures, Peter and Judas. Did Judas repent? What was different about repentance in these two men? In this workshop we will explore what the Scriptures teach regarding forgiveness, feelings and how they need to be congruent with one another. The Critical Role of Repentance in Sexual Sin Room #4 Mrs. Julie Ganschow Sexual sin runs rampant in our society and even in the church. Many spouses want to stay married, but want to know he/she has truly changed. How can you know? This session will examine the various aspects of biblical repentance with respect to sexual sin in marriage. The Need for the Holy Spirit in Counseling Room #5 Rev. Albert Osden We, The counselee and the counselor should both be looking for change in the counselee s life, but knowing the Word of God and some formulaic approach to counseling will not bring about that change that lasts in the counselee life. In order for change to be brought about in a counselee s life, the Holy Spirit must be involved in the lives of both the counselee and the counselor. 11:15 Lunch Break 1:00 Plenary Session #3 Biblical Hope Do You Know What It Looks Like? Sanctuary Dr. Kevin Hurt 3

Hope for the Mentally Sick : Calling Sin Sickness Room #1 Dr. David Tyler 2:00 Break 2:15 Workshop Session #3 In the mid-1960 s, a major shift occurred in the church. Instead of calling sinful behavior sin, it was labeled sickness. Immorality is sexual addiction, idolatry is obsessive compulsive disorder, anger is intermediate explosive disorder, drunkenness is alcoholism, disobedience is oppositional defiant disorder, and stealing is kleptomania. This workshop will show how the disease model of behavior has affected evangelism and sanctification of believers. Key Passages for Faithful Counselors to Teach Addicts Room #2 Dr. Mark Shaw What are the key passages you must know to counsel those struggling with the life-dominating sins of addiction? Learn how the sufficient Word of God can be maximized to help an addict you will counsel. Biblical View of Selfishness and How It Relates to Marriage Room #3 Mr. David Wamble Selflessness or humility is one character quality that enables us to be all Christ wants us to be. Selfishness or pride is at the root of most marriage problems. Realizing one s selfish attitude is the first step toward a Christ-honoring marriage. This workshop will focus on how to change and put on humility. The Conundrum of Unbiblical Parenting Models that Pollute the Church Room #4 Dr. Mark Hagar Good parenting does not happen by default. The church is in serious disarray because we lost our spiritual roots in biblical parenting. Join Dr. Hager in learning how to counsel for change as he addresses the three major parenting styles and philosophies you will encounter in the counseling setting. You will learn how to effectively turn your counseling families back to God and His Word, as well as tackling some of the tough issues in parenting. There are several important resources available to help you in this important family counseling task. Reactive Attachment Disorder, A Biblical Approach Room #5 Mrs. Linda Rice This workshop will apply a biblical lens to characteristics of children fitting the psychological label, Reactive Attachment Disorder, and highlight main points in helping the child, the parents, and the siblings. A Biblical Foundation: The heart of HOPE and HEALING Room #1 Mrs. Marlowe Bulkley 3:15 Break 3:30 Workshop Session #4 "We will not believe more than we know, and we will not live higher than our beliefs." In our Biblically illiterate world, is it any wonder why so many struggle without hope? Have we been faithful to teach who God is: His character, His promises? Let's take a look at the possibilities of what we can share. Getting to the Heart of the Matter Room #2 Mrs. Julie Ganschow True change requires more than stopping one behavior and starting another. This session will help you to learn the key to true biblical change, and equip you to minister these critical truths to others. 4

Faith Without Works is Dead: Observations from Alcohol and Drug Addiction Room #3 Mr. Larry Ganschow This session explores the critical aspects of the heart in alcohol and drug addiction. This interactive session is led by a former "addict" and "alcoholic" who brings biblical and practical experience to the discussion table. Deceptive Diagnosis, The Next Chapter: Obesity Room #4 Dr. Kurt Grady According to today's popular press, obesity is the scourge of the current generation. Some even say it's a matter of national security. Its impact on the development of diabetes and heart disease is staggering. Millions of dollars are being spent by pharmaceutical companies looking for the brain hormone or neurotransmitter that is the key to this growing disease phenomenon. Is this a newly discovered genetic disorder? Is there a scientific explanation? What is really going on? In this workshop, we will answer key questions about one of the most insidious diseases to invade the church in the last 200 years. Is there a medical diagnosis...or could something else more fundamental be to blame? Using James 1 To Help the Counselee See Where Change Must Come In Their Life Room #5 Rev. Albert Osden So often we see trials and temptation as two different events in the believer s life. When we see trials in light of the Word of God and the sovereignty and plan of God in the life of the believer, we see that all trials have two possible kingdom responses. One kingdom being God s and it has a biblical response that will bring about self-examination and ultimately change. The other kingdom being that kingdom of self also has its responses and consequences in the believer s life. 4:30 Dinner Break 7:00 Plenary Session # 4 How Can There Be Present Hope In Ancient Oracles? Sanctuary Dr. Dennis Frey 8:00 Break Is Postmodernism Modern or An Echo From the Past? Room #1 Dr. Dennis Frey 8:15 Workshop Session #5 "Postmodernism is the currently reigning world view of the so-called progressive movement. Its impact on society is hugely significant. The church has not escaped its corrosive influence. Biblical counselors can expect to confront the destructive consequences of postmodern attitudes for decades to come." Hybrid Christianity: The Blending of Christian Theology and Man s Philosophies Room #2 Dr. David Tyler The church has allowed secularists to set the terms of how believers approach grief, depression, anger and the seeming endless number of problems people experience. Like the Israelites who integrated conflicting worldviews, one shaped by God and the other by Baal (Judges 1-3), the Church has accommodated and integrated humanistic philosophies with Christian theology. This workshop focuses on the way many believers hold to conflicting worldviews. One view shaped by the Bible the other by psychology. 5

Help & Hope - Can You Really Have That When There Is So Much Suffering? Part 2 Room #3 Dr. How long, O Lord will it be until my child turns to you?", "How long, O Lord will this illness last?", How long, O lord...?" The questions continue to mount in our hearts with every imaginable challenge we face as we try to make sense of why we struggle so much in our lives. If this is a question you or your counselee is asking, then you will want to attend this two-part workshop. It will address the topic of suffering and offer a Biblical perspective on how to find help and hope. Angry Children Room #4 Mr. Johnny Kicklighter This workshop will focus on Lou Priolo s book Heart of Anger. This book deals with anger's root causes of anger in children, offering corrective advice from a biblical perspective. Counseling Believers Taking Psychoactive Medications Room #5 Dr. Kurt Grady Do you look at that long list of medications your counselee is taking and break out in a sweat? Do you wonder how you will help people who ask you to get them off their medication? What about the science? What about the chemical imbalances? You desperately want to help these people but don't have a clue where to start. This workshop will explore and challenge our presuppositions about science and medicine, compare the secular to the sacred, and help you arrive at place of compassion for the counselee and confident assurance that God is still in charge and His Word is still sufficient to apply in hurting people's lives. Saturday, November 3 Sanctuary Questions & Answers 9:00 Plenary Session #5 10:00 Break 10:15 Workshop Session # 6 How to Help Others Find Hope Room #1 Dr. Ed Bulkley A man lost his job, another man has been struggling with pornography for eleven years, a woman has been depressed and on medication for seven years. One thing all these people have in common is that they have lost hope of ever solving their problems. This workshop will focus on helping people who have lost hope. The Biblical Focus on Successful Marriage Counseling: Where Do I Start and How Do I Keep Them Together Room #2 Dr. Mark Hagar Marriage counseling is one of the most challenging endeavors of the biblical counselor. When you attend this workshop you will learn the important biblical principles of influencing any marriage relationship in conflict for positive change. You will learn the time-tested methods of biblical refocusing and conflict resolution that keeps couples working together to solve problems and glorify God. You will be equipped with resources for your own counseling experience and ministry. 6

Self-Injury and Cutting Room #3 Dr. Mark Shaw The problem of self-injury or cutting is becoming more and more prevalent in our society. In this workshop you will receive hope and help as you gain insight for dealing with this problem from a biblical perspective. Decision Making and the Will of God Room #4 Johnny Kicklighter Christians today are confused and wonder how to determine God s will. This workshop will examine the subject of decision making. We will discuss and contrast the traditional and biblical ways of knowing the will of God. We will also emphasize six things God wants you to know. Faith and Repentance: From Alcohol and Drug Abuse Room #5 Larry Ganschow Fear is sometimes called a lack of faith. Substance abusers eventually reap life damaging consequence; and fear of failing at a sobriety attempt- or fear of succeeding- is a call for taking steps and growth in faith.
