The college will seek reaccreditatio n in 2009-2010. not sought Dean Jerry C. Hudson Dean Jerry C. Hudson The College Mass Communications was last accredited by the Council in Journalism Mass Communications (ACEJMC) in 2003. The accrediting team found no substantive problems in the college s performance based on ACEJMC accrediting stards. However, the college administration faculty articulated its concern with the visiting team about an ACEJMC stard limiting the number hours students might complete in mass communications courses to 40 hours. While the college agrees with the stard that students complete 65 hours in liberal arts courses, the changes in the industry regarding convergence social media have created new career opportunities for students beyond the traditional career paths we taught 20 years ago. Therefore, squeezing new courses exping the curriculum within the 40 hour limit created difficult challenges. Dean Jerry C. Hudson several other administrators at leading mass communication programs have supported a modification to the 40 hour limit. At the present time, there have been no changes to this stard. The college was scheduled to be reviewed for re-accreditation in 2009. The college faculty the college s Pressional Advisory Board recommended unanimously that the college would not seek re-accreditation in 2009. The ACEJMC accreditation is a self-imposed accreditation with no penalties for non-accreditation. Because several programs are now reviewing the values accreditation, the ACEJMC Council is re-evaluating the stard that limits the number mass communication hours programs may require in its respective degree program. Several major programs have chosen to not seek accreditation. Some those programs are University Wisconsin, The Ohio State, Washington State, University Michigan, University Utah, New Mexico State, Oregon State, the University Houston. Only journalism is accredited at the University Texas. Advertising, Public Relations, Broadcasting Photography are not accredited at UT. At some point in the future, the college may consider ACEJMC accreditation. At the present time, the college is not accredited by ACEJMC.
