Area 1. Program Description and Purpose Summary The Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies would provide a formal course of study for students interested in integrating knowledge of museums into their own academic disciplines or professional training. As a complement to the established MA program in museum studies, the Certificate program would give students a solid grounding in the theory and practice of Museum Studies. The Museum Studies core curriculum will be the basis for the graduate certificate, which emphasizes the essential interdisciplinary and collaborative nature of museum work by drawing on a range of departments in the University, from Architecture to Public Administration. The program is designed to attract and engage two student populations not currently served by the MA in Museum Studies. The first are students working on an advanced degree who see museums as part of their research or as a future career. The second group is people currently working in museums who desire to enhance their professional qualifications. These two groups will expand the diversity of interest and experience in the Museum Studies Program. The program would allow students to gain knowledge in preparation for doctoral study, as well as for employment in museums and related fields such as historic preservation, cultural resource preservation, archives, and government 1
2 2. Comparable programs in the state/region 3. Source(s) of articulated demand / need for this program (Provide specific information / data) agencies. There are no comparable programs in the state, and only a very few in the region. While three Big 12 schools have dedicated Museum Studies Master s programs Baylor, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech none offer graduate certificates in the field. In our broad region, the known graduate certificates in Museum Studies are offered at University of Cincinnati, Colorado, IUPUI, Michigan, Michigan State, University of Missouri-St. Louis, Northwestern, and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Students and faculty from several departments in the College, including History, American Studies, Indigenous Studies, Art History, Biology, Geology, Anthropology, Architecture, and Public Administration, have expressed interest in Museum Studies courses. 4. Proposed Curriculum How many of these courses are available via distance delivery or online? The Museum Studies Graduate Certificate will require 15 hours of course work including a 3 credit (minimum) research practicum or Internship. MUSE 702, The Nature of Museums, will be required, as will a continuation of MUSE 702, to be called The Culture of Museums (in Spring 2013 this course will be taught as a Special Topics course, but we will pursue an individual course number for it as soon as possible.) The remaining 9 hours will be selected from courses in which there is a demonstrable component that has relevance to museum studies. At this time, none of the courses is available via distance delivery or online, but converting courses to online offerings is something we will want to investigate. 2

Welsh (Professor & Director, Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania), Whitney Baker (Lecturer; Conservator, MLS, University of Texas at Austin), Sofia Garza Liu (Lecturer; Collection Manager Spencer Museum of Art, MA, University of Kansas), Robert Keckeisen (Lecturer; Director Kansas Museum of History- Topeka, MA, Wichita State University), Mary Madden (Lecturer; Director of Education and Outreach at Kansas Museum of History- Topeka, MA, University of Kansas), Bruce Scherting (Lecturer; Exhibits Director at University of Kansas Natural History Museum, MFA Southern Illinois University), Sherry Williams (Lecturer; Curator of Kansas Collection in Spencer Research Library, MLIS, University of Oklahoma). Additional courses taught by faculty in other departments will satisfy the program requirements. 6.
