3.6 DECADAL GROWTH RATE OF POPULATION - INDIA AND MADHYA PRADESH In Census 2011, India has registered a decadal growth of 17.6 percent and Madhya Pradesh that of 20.3 percent, over the Census 2011 figures. Thus, the growth rate in the state is higher by 2.7 percentage points compared to national average. While comparing population of the state since 1901, we find that there has been comparatively lesser growth of population during the first half of the last century 1901 to 1951. Thereafter, there was steady growth of population during 1951 to 1971. The decadal growth rate in 1951-61 was 24.7 percent and in 1961-71 was 29.3 percent. The declining trend in population started from Census 1971, a decline from 29.3 percent in 1961-71 to 27.2 percent in 1971-81 and 1981-91, 24.3 percent in 1991-01 and 20.3 percent in 2001-11 as shown in Figure 3.10 35 Fig. 3.10 Decadal : 1901-11 to 2001-11 India Madhya Pradesh 30 25 20 15 10 5 0-5 1901-11 1911-21 1921-31 1931-41 1941-51 1951-61 1961-71 1971-81 1981-91 1991-01 2001-11 Census Year The highest growth rate in 2001-11 among states and UTs of India is recorded in Dadar & Nagar Haveli (55.5%) followed by Daman & Diu (53.5%), Meghalaya (27.8%), Puducherry (27.7%) and Arunachal Pradesh (25.9%). The states/uts with negative /lowest growth rate is recorded in Nagaland (-0.5%) followed by Kerala (4.9%), Lakshadweep (6.2%), Andaman & Nicobar Islands (6.7%) and Goa (8.2%) as shown in Statement 3.10.The decadal growth rate in the state during the period 1901 to 2011 is shown in Figure 3.11 Statement 3.10 Top five and bottom five States/UTs by growth rate State/UT Top five States/UTs Dadar & Nagar Haveli 55.5 Daman & Diu 53.5 Meghalaya 27.8 Puducherry 27.7 Arunachal Pradesh 25.9 Bottom five States/UTs State/UT Nagaland -0.5 Kerala 4.9 Lakshadweep 6.2 Andaman & Nicobar Islands 6.7 Goa 8.2 50

POPULATION COUNT, GROWTH RATE AND DENSITY Note : The estimated birth rate, death rate and infant mortality rate, 2009 in the state is 27.7, 8.5 and 67 respectively compared to 31.0, 10.1 and 86 in 2001 as per the SRS Bulletin (volume 45 No. 1). Further, the yearly trends on vital rates during the decade 2001-11, in respect of all these three important vital components is declining {Reference: Family Welfare Statistics in India, 2009 report (based on Sample Registration System, RGI)}. The effect of these vital rates is reflected in overall decline in decadal growth rate in the state.
