PFSC / PWF 2017 ART POSTER AND PHOTO CONTEST THEME DETAILS Each year the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen and the Pennsylvania Wildlife Federation, hold a poster and photo contest to encourage creative expression and an appreciation and understanding of the outdoor world. The contests are open to school aged children in grades 4-12 who live in Pennsylvania. Entries will compete against others in the same age group. Youngsters can be attending public or private schools or be home schooled. If there are any questions about the contest or for information on rules and/or how to enter please contact the PFSC office at (717) 232-3480 or pfscorg@comcast.net. 2017 THEME: Early Successional Habitat Through this contest, we hope to encourage you to learn more about Pennsylvania s wildlife, fisheries and natural resources. For this year s theme, we want you to celebrate Early Successional Habitat by highlighting young forests, old fields and pastures, and/or grasslands and the species that inhabit them like grouse, woodcock, and golden winged warblers. Early successional habitat is habitat with grasses, shrubs and trees which provide excellent food and cover for wildlife. These types of habit however need management to be maintained. Examples of early successional habitats include weedy areas, grasslands, old fields or pastures, shrub thickets, and young forest. If these habitats are not mowed, burned, cut, or disturbed in some other fashion, they will eventually become a forest over time. This process is known as succession. Therefore, grasslands, old fields, and young forests are often referred to as early-successional habitats. Many species of wildlife including birds, mammals, reptiles and insects benefit from this type of habitat and depend on it for their survival. Early successional habitat provides food, breeding areas, shelter from predators and more! For example, woodcock forage for their preferred meal of earthworms and Ruffed Grouse chicks feed exclusively on the insects found in early successional areas. Golden-Winged Warblers prefer fields with weeds and shrubs to build their nests. In your artwork or photo, we want to see how you view the early successional habitat that provide essential needs for a variety of wildlife. Get outside and look around, and then look closer. What did you miss the first time? What open grasslands or streams are present in your area of the state? What species have you seen living there? GET EXCITED: Learn more about ecosystems and habitats that support wildlife, fisheries and the outdoors where you live! GET OUTSIDE: You won t know how amazing nature is until you LOOK! GET INVOLVED: You can do something to make your neighborhood a better place for our natural resources. By looking closer, you will see how you can lend a hand by creating or improving habitat in your own back yard. More resources: To learn more about early successional forests go to: http://youngforest.org/
